Hausa Wikimedians User Group Report for Wikimania 2021[edit]

Participants

In August 2021, Hausa Wikimedians User Group organized series of events in Nigeria to join other Wikimedians worldwide to participate in the annual Wikimania conference. Multiples events were organized in two main cities where our members predominantly reside. Two events were first organized to give orientation and participate in the virtual event and a post-wikimania event was also organized afterward. This report gives detail of the activities that took place and funds spent.

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes. We met most goals and even surpassed some. There are are number of new comers too in each location. In general we are happy with how the project went, but there are lessons learnt and room for improvement that we took note of to make future similar project better.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Learning[edit]

Participants at the event

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Virtually everything worked well, participants turned up in large number and were excited. We were able to successfully hold the events in our two locations even though it was necessary to do a pre-selection because we could not conveniently cater for all the people that indicated interest to attend. Disbursing of the data support and also headsets hardware was also successfully accomplished without any problems.

  • What did not work so well?

Internet connectivity problems made some planned activities and goals difficult to achieve.

Initial delay of receiving the funds also caused some issues but were resolved eventually.

The Remo platform was generally new to almost every participants and some had some hard time figuring how to use it effectively.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Plan earlier than we did now. Give better orientation on the software being employed for virtual event especially if it's not so well known to the expected participants.

Finances[edit]
