Wikimania 2021 Pre-Conference in Tanzania will be a East Africa regional in-person gathering that will bring together Wikimedians from the East Africa region to increase awareness of what Wikimania is and the important topics that will be discussed during the Wikimania Conference in August 2021. Going in line with Wikimania 2021's theme which is 20 years of Wikipedia, the conference seeks to raise awareness and bring a common understanding of different global recommendations, initiatives, topics, discussions, ideas, steps and future plans that Wikimedia movement works on to ensure that ‘‘By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us’’

What Wikimedia movement affiliate do you represent?
- Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania and some other Wikimedia communities who are not eligible for funding but still would like to participate in some Wikimania related activities as indicated in this grant proposal.
What needs are you requesting funding for to support your community’s participation at Wikimania?
- We will need several things to run a Wikimania 2021-Pre conference in Tanzania (in person event) as indicated and explained in the budget below.
Please provide a summary explaining the following:
- how you will invite community members to apply for funding,
- The email to all community representatives was sent explain the conference Idea and they was asked to provide their budgets that will cover their participation costs in both the pre-conference and the main Wikimania Conference in August 2021
- the criteria you will use to determine eligibility, and
- The criteria used was looking for the countries that has atleast a community of Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects contributors who would like to acquires more knowledge on Wikimania and other Wikimedia ongoing global conversations suchs as Regional hubs.
- the processes or services you will use to distribute funds.
- After we receive the funds in Tanzania, we will contact the communitiesrepresentatives on the best way we can send them their funds requested, this includes a variety of mechanisms such as mobile money transfers (eg. MPESA, TIGOPESA, AIRTEL MONEY), through Bank transfers or other means of sending money such as Western Union.
Outcomes[edit]
Please provide a range or estimate for the number of participants the funding will support.
- 36 Foreigners will receive flight and Accomodatio scholarship
- 70 Will receive small hardware support (earphones) and
- 30 Will be given local travel scholarship
Impact of the Project[edit]
- Most of the African Wikimedians have never attended Wikimania Conference before, and some even don't know what Wikimania is because either they are newbies to Wikimedia activities or some have limited experience of what Wikimania is all about. Therefore; this conference will open minds of the participants on the significance of the global pre-conferences and how they can participate actively in various discussions that will be there.
- There are a lot of Global discussions going on within the Wikimedia movement (including discussions around Wikimedia 2030 ), but still most of the African Wikimedians aren't aware of that, and there is a lack of common understanding of those concepts for those few who have some idea/know about these topics. Therefore; this pre-conferencet will help to bridge the gender gaps among the newbies and volunteers who have knowledge about Wikimania and other global topics such as movement Charter, global council and Regional hubs.
- We don't have many platforms that bring us (African Wikimedians/ East African Wikimedians) together to discuss the topics that directly affect us within the Wikimedia Movement.Therefore; this pre-conference will be used as a platform for discussing Africa related topics/projects as well as global topics in relation to Africa contexts. This will help to lay down a good foundation for regional collaboration amongst East African (and the neighbouring) Wiki communities hence the good future for the Wikimedia Movement in East Africa/Africa
- In most cases African communities are lagging behind when it comes to active participation in global discussions about different topics within the Movement.Therefore; through this conference we hope the participation and understanding of the topics discussed during Wikimania in August will be increased and hence it helps the participants to be on the same page when it comes to what is going on Within the Wikimedia movement.
