Report 2021[edit]

Overview

The Algerian Wikimedians User Group ("WikiDZ") was recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation on November 01, 2014.

During this reporting year from November 2020 to November 2021, WikiDz was aproved his Charter and in the process of drafting its Internal regulations: a step towards the final bylaws to fully consolidate the governance of the group. as stated in the charter, with full accordance with local laws.

Many highlights include:

Many activities were successfully carried out and we are proud to be the first with local expertise to have realized a totally online conference for the Arab community with more than 70 presentation proposals for 3 days.

To have offered an artistic work for the promotion of Knowledge which is a song on Wikipedia that has collected almost 100000 views.

We've a very rich region that leads us as a group to collaborate with several entities in the Arab world - the African and European region is to remain the most stable group in the region that helps other groups to emerge.

Our totally autonomous education program that continues to train to discover Wikipedia in Algerian universities.

The pandemic has brought out all our energy and this is the best year for WikiDZ.

The activities we didn't achieve will in most cases have to be postponed to the next year if they are of value, especially the internal rules and the creation of the association at the local level.

We would like to thank the WMF for its support and its indefectible trust in our activities. Without it, many events could not have been held.

You can read all the details below and you can tell us more about your remarks for continuous improvement.

Wiki Loves Africa 2021 15/03/2021[edit]

Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) is an annual contest where anyone across Africa can contribute free media that is relevant to their experience to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia communities (Wikimedia movement), and also make this shared media freely available for the Humankind.

Wiki Loves Africa encourages participants to contribute media (photographs, video and audio) that illustrate the specific theme for that year. Each year the theme changes and is chosen by the community from a few universal, visually rich and culturally specific topics (for example, markets, rites of passage, festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urbanity, daily life, notable persons, etc.).

The project is a one-month competition which will next take place from Feb 15th till April 30, 2021

Wiki Loves Africa particularly encourages participants to contribute media that illustrate a specific theme for that year. Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • Social media campaign - the banner helped us a lot - jury tools photo selection
  • What did not work so well?
    • This year, the impact of the pandemic was much greater and felt than the first, we started the contest exactly with the second wave, after a year of containment - all the events in person could not be organized, even the theme of the contest was extremely difficult to execute and promote among participants, especially in these kinds of photos that is health.
    • The receipt of funds was too difficult this year and they were received only in the fall of 2021, which means that it was difficult to launch the competition and finish it, this delay disrupts the planned program and delays us especially in the distribution of gifts to the winners, etc. The fact of borrowing while waiting for the receipt of funds especially in a period of crisis economic crisis and during the pandemic complicates the whole contest and extends it over the whole year, which is harmful for the participants and the organizers.
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • Despite the difficulty of the organization again this year
    • we continue the competition because it is a challenge
    • We will not apply for a grant.
    • we will find local sponsors

Wikiarabia Algeria 15 to 17 /10/2021[edit]

WikiArabia 2021 Algeria, the fifth Arab Conference, will be organized virtually by a group of volunteers. The 2021 edition was originally announced to be an event in person, scheduled to be held in Algiers, Algeria, organized by the Algerian User Group. This was a postponement of Wiki Arabia for Algerian cause of the Corona pandemic. It was originally scheduled during April 2021. In February 2021, it was announced that it will be organized 2021 virtually. Inside Algerian user group, we've always considered a personal meeting to be the most effective means of communication. We believe that virtual events will not replace face-to-face meetings. However, we also believe that the current health crisis should not prevent members of the Arab Wikimedia community from the meeting, communicating and exchanging knowledge.

Subject and history

Under the title Infitah Openness, the first virtual conference of its kind directed to the Arab Wikimedia community will be organized, the date of the conference will be from 15 to 17 October 2021.

  1. 120 participants Registered
  2. 72 sessions Submitted
  3. 7 sponsors

In normal circumstances, the reports are published completely during the final ceremony, and this is what we did, the YouTube video, the rest of the conference video is in this channel for those who wish to follow it on the WikiArabia channel dedicated to the conference, the content consists of 60 videos from various fields, topics that do not occur in mind,  almost one of the biggest outputs of the conference.

With this, we distributed a questionnaire at the end of the conference, and the data is ready. It is expected to be published when the final report is completed. It has been more than 3 months since the end of the conference, and we all asked our honorable brothers for some patience. With the current situation, we encountered a delay in compiling and writing the report, but it is in its door. The news and we will publish it with the financial report as soon as possible.

As a reminder, the discussion revolved around the periodicity of the conference and the formation of an Arab council to decide on the appointment of at least two teams for the next two years, as organizers of the 2021 Algeria conference, which was supposed to be organized during 2020 without Corona, with an announcement that was made during the closing ceremony of theWikiarabia 2019 Marrakesh conference. I suggested that the groups express their desires for 2022, and this was discussion.

Announcing the organizing group or country, we wanted it to be traditional every year at the end of the conference, and just as Marrakesh and the subject of languages and dialects in the Arab world were the subject of openness towards knowledge expansion accelerating the absorption of knowledge of the Arabic letter, sensitive topics that produced a lot of digital letters, but they are necessary, And no matter how intense the dialogue and discussion are, it is evidence only of awareness and desire to reach the best on the part of everyone.

When the report is finished, it will be published in the meta and linked here on the Wikipedia page: Arabic Wiki

Wiki loves Monuments in Algeria 2021 01 to 31/10/2021[edit]

Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) is a public photo competition around cultural heritage monuments, organized by Wikimedia chapters and groups. In 2010 it was organized in the Netherlands, and was followed by a Europe-wide 2011 edition. Ever since 2012 the competition is organized annually in countries across the world! This is the biggest photography competition in the world and we hope to be able to count on massive participation again this year.

The aim of the contest is to ask the general public—readers and users of Wikipedia, photographers, hobbyists, etc.—to take pictures of cultural heritage monuments and upload them to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

For its 9th time the group participates in this Edition in spite of the covid, in spite of the lack of subsidy the group has maintained its participation
