The problem and the context[edit]

Les sans pagEs started as a project (with another name in 2015) in partnership with Wikimedia CH and the University of Geneva in order to tackle gender gap issues in te francophone community and work towards more inclusivity and diversity. Our initiatives have been largely successful, but teh gender gap problem remains, as well as a lack of representation of women in our communities. The project has grown, with a need for more ressources to enable local groups to initiate similar editathons and workshops locally to enable women and underepresented communities to learn how to contribute on Wikipédia. Volunteers are often not able to keep up with the many sollicitations. Also many GLAM institutions and universities are reaching out to us to set up edithatons during the week, which is complicated for volunteers. An association was created in 2017 to manage the received funds with an established governance structure.

We have been holding annual events since 2017 financed by Wikimedia CH and which have become a landmark for participants of Les sans pagEs, enabling them to connect, work together on the governance level of the association, showcase future projects and exchange ressources and know-how. Since 2021, we also hold our general assembly within the week end, enabling anybody willing to join the association to join and participate.

In 2023 we will be holding another convention again though the place and dates need to be confirmed. The 2 day format as tried last year did not enable participant to contribute much, so this time we want to go back to a 3 day format.

In the mean time, the expansion and professionalisation of our activities means more important funding needs. We aim to diversify the funding sources, both maintaining the very appreciated support from our historic partners Wikimedia CH, Wikimedia France and Wikimedia Foundation, and finding additional support from external partners.

Local initiatives have been emerging from diverse regions (Bénin, Limoges (fr), Toulouse (fr), Meyrin (Switzerland) in 2022, while others have paused due to the pandemia or paused (Sion) and are slowly reemerging, or maintaining and increasing activity (Paris, Geneva) . In that context, allowing a fixed budget to a local group is not optimal as some local groups might emmerge (Bordeaux, Lorraine, Tourraine, Rennes) and need funding for events, while others may pause due to lack of volunteer engagement.

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

Gender gap[edit]

The problem of the gender gap and the lack of diversity and inclusion has been well identified from years within the Wikimedia community, and we have been successfully solving it during the last 6 years within the francophone community. However, the biases are still very present, and we feel the need for more. This is aligned with the Wikimedia 2030 strategy goals.

Structuration of the user group and association[edit]

We are trying to set up the structure necessary to sustain the project on a long term basis to be able to respond to incresed sollicitations. To achieve this we have been recruiting as an association and user group our first employee to keep up with the increase of the work that needs to be done. To adress the sollicitations of institutions who want to have gender gap events throughout the year and provide workshops to learn how to contribute on Wikipedia while respecting the communities rules and founding principles, and to cover the sollicitations to have more thematic edithatons, we are lacking human ressources that are available throughout the week and not only evenings and week ends, given the workload.

Annual convention[edit]

We also want to continue organizing the annual convention. Contributors who are working towards more diversity in content and representation often organize editathons and meet up, but have needs to pause and reflect on an annual basis on the work done, the work to be done and what is needed, as well as have a safe space where to discuss all theses issues to be able to organize the work load efficiently, share values and know how. They also need some positive feedback about their efforts in the community.

Local groups[edit]

Existing groups are resuming or continuing activities and we need a budget to sustain their initiatives (Paris, Geneva, Valais, Lorriane, Tourraine, Rennes). Future projects are emmerging and allready have planned events (monthly events in Meyrin, Toulouse) , there are on teh level of discussing with no page project for the moment : Zagreb (one event to be planned with the French institute, Wikigap with the UN in Geneva, Saint Imiers, LGBTIQ events in Paris other than the monthly event in Paris, Marseille (work with LGBTIQ archives). These events will need additional funding in 2023, that were not needed during the pandemia because we could not meet IRL.

What is your solution to this problem (please explain the context and the solution)?[edit]

We hired a new employee and are setting up a working environment, to structure our user group and associated association in order to face the increase in activity. We plan to rise the number of activities and plan to organize more editathons, notably online and in Switzerland. We will continue to organize an annual event to share past learning patterns and to empower people from underrepresented communities in the Wikimedia movement who have new projects they want to develop, by putting them in networking situation with more senior members, during the week end, but also during workshops and sessions. During the weekend, we try to include fun activities for people to relax away from internet too (walking, cycling, swimming, drawing) and also have workshops to reflect on governance.

We also have a transversal project, Les sans images, which has been very sucessful last year in illustrating pages that had no illustrations on Wikipedia. we would like to hire artists to do more professional illustrations for this project. We also plan to add onsite events to transversal events in line with the movement strategy concerning underrepresented subjects : Europride (one small test event held in septemeber 2022) and the Marche des fiertés.

To enable local groups to access financing of their local initiatives with flexibility, we would need to allocate sustainable funding to our microfinance system to be able to adjust to their needs more quickly. The groups that will need additional financing :

  1. Bénin the project started in 2020 and is very active. One member now belongs to the board of trustees of the association. A defined budget has been asked to the association in 2022 for 2023.
  2. Limoges (transport, accomodation and books for the Zébrure festival in Spring and autumn)
  3. Geneva (monthly session called wikisamedis that were held in Livresse. We are looking for another meeting place as Livresse might be closing)
  4. Geneva Wikimidis : the project will resume in 2023 in coordination with the diversity department of the University of Geneva on a weekly basis
  5. Geneva : a project is emmerging concerning the feminist strike, discussion are starting
  6. Meyrin (monthly events starting on october 22, 2022)
  7. Valais the project will resume in january 2023, there are ongoing discussions
  8. Toulouse (weekly events)
  9. Lorraine (one event annually)
  10. Tourraine (one event annually)
  11. Paris has monthly events at the Gaité Lyrique but other groups are emmerging concerning LGBTIQ contents.
  12. Lyon annual event with the local university and plans to have a wiktionnary event dedicated to the gender gap with the Cabale de Lyon where there are many wiktionnarists. Discussions are ongoing with a local contributor to have an event with local archives concerning minorities in Lyon (the page has not been set up for the moment for theses two last initiatives).
  13. Les sans images
  14. Annual events around LGBTIQ subjects : Europride, Mois des fiertés and LGBTIQ history month : we plan to add an onsite session for these initiatives that were held online during pandemia.

Project goals[edit]

How will you know if you have met your goals?[edit]

Structuration and sustainability of teh association[edit]

If we succeed we will have by the end of the year succesfully asked an APG grant to the foundation to make our user group more sustainable in the long run, and fundraised locally to become more independant. We will have provided the ressources needed by the contributors of les sans pagEs on Wikipedia to contribute and organize events, as well as trained them to manage events while respecting founding priniciples, notability criteria and rules of teh various projects, as well as applying the Universal code of conduct.

Annual convention[edit]

Concerning the annual convention, which is now, thanks to Wikimedia CH's support a regular meeting since three years (1rst session : Sion, 2 : Fribourg, 3 : Geneva, 4 : Geneva) these are our success metrics : We usually ask the participants to provide feedback directly on the project after the event to know how they felt about the meeting.

  • successfully hold the general assembly
  • successfully integrate newcomers in the governance of the LSP user group and association
  • publish the consequence ladder that we elaborated last year

Projects for Local groups and global events based in Switzerland[edit]

If we succeed, we will see the emmergence of new initiatives and consolidate existing ones in 2023, building on what has allready been achieved until now. We will have communicated clear guidelines for newcomers on these projects, relying on our charter, the founding principles, the Universal code of conduct and abiding to the rules of the projects they are contributing to (in particular the notability criterias on the various wikipedias).
We particularly aim at having at least two international projects launched from Switzerland :

We plan to reestablish regular weekly meetings in

  • Meyrin and Geneva (Meyrin has allready started)
  • we plan to have at least 3 GLAM events in th francophone part of Switzerland :
    • one is allready programmed in Lausanne for the 11th of March 2023

One othr event will be during the month of pride

Do you have any goals or metrics around participation or content?[edit]

For the project[edit]

For the project in general, we will succeed if we are able to maintain the current level of activity and engagement, both in the events organized IRL, the GLAM interventions, and the content produced (see past reports of the user group). We want to increase the quality of what was produced as well, with the aim of linking created articles to the rest of the wikpedia ecosystem, having more newbies genrating projects and local events and trining them to understand better the decisions processes on Wikipedia so that they can be fully integrated in the community.

  • Have at least one labellised quality article produced through community work each year
  • Continue creating well sourced articles at the current average rate of 100 articles per month but devote more time to reading produced articles and linking them to the within the ecosystem
  • Continue to facilitate the evaluation of articles through regular online meetings (4 per month)
  • Continue to provide technical events and support for regular contributors to upgrage their skills (telegram and wikimidis)
  • Achieve one additional stable GLAM cooperation in the year with an institution
  • Participate to discussions within the wikimedia movement concerning the gender gap (diversity hub)
  • generate an evaluation of the gender gap within the 100 vital articles each month using PAC2's tool

For the annual convention[edit]

  • participation of at least 15 wikimedians from les sans pagEs
  • create or update one article per person on local content related to the gender gap
  • have at least one person coming from Africa, an underrepresented part of the Wikimedia movement
  • have at least one new project from a newbie emmerging

Local groups and global events[edit]

  • return feedback for each initiative (14 listed above) with a clear assigned budget for them to enable their acitivivities in 2023
  • have at least 70% of these events and initiatives actually holding an event
  • have at least 5 new initiatives emmerging in 2023 with a new project page
  • have at least one event bringing new contributing skills in 2023held (wiktionnary is proposed for 2023)
  • maintain networking, trining and support session on a weekly basis to support new emmerging projects (wikimidis online)
  • have 10 training sessions organized throughout the year for facilitators wanting to set up a project page, a dashboard and subsequent reporting following teh best practices set up on the project les sans pagEs.

Budget details for the annual convention[edit]

This is a prospective budget based on last years event. Number of participants is usually higher (approx 15) but we usually manage along these figures.

  • 50.-CHF/day X 3 days X 10 participantes = 50 X 20 X 2 = 1500 CHF (lunch friday saturday and sunday)
  • 125 CHF / day X 10 X 2 days approx. in average per participants (night friday saturday sunday) = 2500 CHF
  • pen & pencils, necklaces, notepads, mascs, disinfectant, office supplies for workshop 200 CHF
  • room rental if needed : 200 X 3 = 600 CHF
  • transport : 2700 CHF (see detail below)

    • 1000 CHF / 1 transport for one person coming from Africa 1000 CHF
    • 200 chf / 1 person coming from Africa (visa cost) 200 CHF

(** 20% variation for transport and accomodation would be appreciated in case we invite people from abroad)
