EduWiki Conference 2023 was the first time for the representative and anyone from the Malaysia user group to participate.

Discussions

[edit]

I attended various talk sessions in this 3-day conference, which are:

Open Educational Resources

[edit]
  • Need to make learning curve and outcome on what we want to achieve for any new changes in education

Reimagining the Future of Wikimedia in Education

[edit]
  • EduWiki scope in K-12, higher education and lifelong learning
  • Wiki clubs and camps and teacher/senior citizens training
  • Main assessment on Wikipedia and Wikidata
  • Teacher's training in collaboration with the ministry of education, where teachers obtain credits by working with EduWiki
  • Partnering with other outreach efforts, such as cultural and governmental institutions, research institutions, science and medical institutions, knowledge gaps and DEI/EDI focus (equity, diversity and inclusion) and UNESCO's global education coalition
  • Interactive platform for open educational resources, where Wikimedia Indonesia launched a book about Wikipedia
  • Data literacy, digital literacy, academic skills, collaborative skills, social accountability and impact, reference and provenance
  • Skills that can be improved by EduWiki programs: digital literacy, academic skill, collaborative skills and social skills
  • Web 2.0 platform (web that have interactive between web and users): Wikipedia is the best one to improve skills
  • Research (engagement with the research community has also led to a deeper, more sustainable support of the movement and it encourages the research in technological tools)
  • Impact (education programs and initiatives demonstrated impact that needs to be widely understood, better tracked and shared)
  • Mapping of challenges (internal: scattered efforts without a joint, global strategy and resources, missing suitable technological infrastructure, missing system for curating shared experiences and best practices, missing resources for capacity building; external: lack of awareness to our work by decision makers (ministry of education, universities etc), lack of knowledge/recognition by like-minded organizations (OECD etc), generative AI)
  • Wikipedia is in a better position to explain to the public about the generative AI. When we write Wikipedia, generally we help the world, but specifically we help the AI to learn more.
  • The future (opportunities: a moment in time for all stakeholders to come together and join forces, decide on a strategy for EduWiki work (goals, metrics etc), discuss the right organizational form for said strategy)
  • Recommendations (increase the sustainability of our movement, improve user experience, provide for safety and inclusion, ensure equity in decision making, coordinate across stakeholder etc)

Improvements

[edit]
  • The organizer apologized to those (from some countries) who could not come to the event due to the inability for them to get the Serbian visa
  • The Fly Dubai flight in which I (and other two EduWiki Conference participants) flew from Dubai (transit) to Belgrade had its air-conditioner broken and we were left in the heat and difficulties in breathing inside the closed aircraft at the Dubai airport tarmac for about one hour
