Wikimedia Fellowships/Project Ideas/Wikipedia Photography Club or Wiki Photographer

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wiki Photographer or a Wikipedia Photography Club will be a platform from where we will try to gather and produce good photographs for Wikipedia. All are permitted to join this group but as the project title says we the group is mainly for photographers or the people who are interested to photography.

The project is targeted for the Bengali Wikipedia and more specifically for Bangladesh. The main goal will be to add at least one image in every article of Bengali Wikipedia. If the article is written on some recent topic or the subject item is exists or available the like the Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban then we can capture the different photographs to select the best one and improve the quality but if it does not available now or if it was a past event then we will try to collect the photos. For example the Bengali Language Movement and Liberation war of Bangladesh.

Through this project we will try to encourage the photographer to contribute to Wikipedia. The present status shows that there are good number of content developers in wiki. Though there are many fantastic images are available but if compared with the quality of the content the images are not good enough. Along with this if we do not start to collect the old historical photos then after few years those images might not be available. That is why i think the project should be started.

Rationale[edit]

A single photo might be a great document. We can start a new article based on that photos, like once i went to visit at Noyabaad Mosque and uploaded some images at commons (commons:Category:Noyabaad_Mosque) then started the article en:Noyabaad Mosque. I want to start this trend. Because i have noticed in the social network sites that many people have their own camera and they took photos of different places, at the time of visiting the places of as a hobby. Here the project if to collect those images in a structured way.

In the outreach events we says that, "Read the Wikipedia", "Contribute to Wikipedia", "Create new or edit the existing articles" and so on. But in each way the new contributor have to have some interest or good knowledge of writing. But a photographer might not be motivated by this, he might not be interested to writing an article. At best he can add a good caption of the image. But the only caption is not sufficient to start an article. So here we will try to tag the content writes with the photographers not the photographers with the the content writes.

Targeted - addresses strategic theme(s) or goals
The project is targeted to attract new users, in specific a new type of users. Through this project we will try to add new contributor who are interested in photography.

Actionable - has concrete deliverables and outcomes
First the project will be initiated in Bangladesh to collect the images of the Bengali Language Movement and Liberation war of Bangladesh. There are many heritage places in Bangladesh and the government in not that much aware to maintain those and already some of the heritage architectures are been destroyed. So the another goal is to preserve the history in images. Initially the project will be started from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and then the project will be spread to the other part of the country.

Impactful - can have impact on a large group of people, articles, projects
The project is targeted for the photographers and I experiences in the social network sites that now many of the people have their own camera. They took the photographs of different places where they visit of as a hobby. and different university have their photography club. This project is targeted to use those resources for the betterment of Wikipedia.

Sustainable - builds volunteer-driven continuity over time
Within the fellowship time period a group of contributors will be gathered in different parts of the country and the project will be continued by them and even I can assist them too.

Scalable - has the potential to transfer knowledge or approaches to multiple languages or projects
The project is applicable for the other language Wikipedia or for different countries. Even someone of the other wiki can replicate this idea.

Measurable - can demonstrate impact
The goal if the project is to create new articles for Wikipedia but the creation approach will be different way. Initially the photographers will get more priority that the main content developer. But both of the groups have to work aligned. New articles will be created with good photos and the lack of images of the old articles will be removed.

I am Nasir Khan Saikat and i am I am very much interested in becoming a fellow.

I am active in Bengali Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. I am one of the founding members of Wikimedia Bangladesh. I have organized and conducted many workshops in different universities of Bangladesh. I am with the Wikipedia for many years and aware of the rules of the wiki and i am confident that i can lead the project. Some years age a few images has been collected from the Rafiqul Islam and uploaded to commons (Commons:Category:Photos by Rafiqul Islam). The photos was taken at the time period of the Language Movement of Bangladesh. I was involved in that project too. So i think i can lead a similar kind of project in bigger radios.

I have some knowledge about photography i upload photos to Wikimedia Commons and to my Flickr and Picasa Web album. We maintain a mailing list (wikiphotos(_AT_)bdosn.org) where we help the other people to upload photos to commons. Even we upload the images on behalf of those photographs.

I have attended all the recent Wiki Meetups in Dhaka and participated in Wikimania 2010 and WikiConference India. I have a good relation with the community members and i work for other volunteer organizations who promotes open source philosophy, like Bangladesh Open Source Network.

Endorsements[edit]

This section is for endorsements by Wikimedia community volunteers. Please note that this is not a debate, vote, or poll, but is rather a space for volunteers to describe in detail why they think a project idea is of value. If you have concerns or questions rather than an endorsement to make, please use the idea Talk page. Endorsements by volunteers willing to work in collaboration with a fellowship recipient on a project are highly encouraged.

  • Definitely there ought to be more tools to help communities come together and collaborate. There are plenty of people in Dhaka who have digital cameras and are uploading pictures to social networking sites, and they ought to become aware that they could be contributing pictures to Wikimedia Commons. The same is true for every city. This could be a model project. Blue Rasberry (talk) 00:11, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
