Wikimedia Ireland Community is an active user group and a future Wikimedia chapter in Ireland. Participants are implementing the creation of Wikimedia Ireland, and applying for official User Group status with the Wikimedia Foundation. We are currently running a number of events, training members, and attending outreach events.

Our Mission

  • To aid and encourage people to collect, develop and disseminate educational, cultural, and historic content in the public domain or under a license that allows everyone to freely use, distribute and modify said content without the payment of royalties.
  • To encourage public and private galleries, libraries, archives and museums on the island of Ireland to make their holdings more broadly and freely available and to collaborate with these institutions in an effort to preserve the heritage of the island of Ireland.
  • To make use of, encourage the use of, and educate people in the use of free and open source information resources, in any form, for the advancement of education.
  • To encourage the development and release of these materials in the languages of the island of Ireland including but not limited to English and Irish.

Several activities and events have been scheduled well into 2016. Recent events have been very successful to welcome new members, build interest, and awareness. See below for recent and future events:

History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Ireland Workshop (12 November)

Interested in learning more about editing and contributing to Wikipedia and attending this year's HSTM Network Ireland conference? Why not make your first few edits whilst tucking into a sandwich from 1-2:30pm Saturday 12 November. Rebecca O'Neill will be lead trainer, all you need is a laptop to take part. No editing experience is necessary!

UCD Decade of Centenaries Editing Workshop (23 November)

Details to be announced soon.

WikiLovesMonuments (Fall 2016)

Now in its third year, Wiki Loves Monuments returns in 2016. The national competition encouraged amateur and professional photographers to seek out and capture images of Ireland's national monuments, then share them with a global audience online. To mark the centenary of 1916, the list now includes sites and buildings relating to Easter 1916. Visit for all the details. Winners will be announced soon!

Citizen Science Meetups at the Science Gallery (recurring)

A series evening meetups where science professional, amateur, or activists are invited to speak about a theme. The theme is in conjunction with the current exhibition schedule of the Science Gallery, Dublin.
