Wikimedia ED Meeting in Vienna[edit]

Basics
  • in a nutshell: the affiliate EDs and WMF staff met in Vienna in order to prepare input for phase 2 of the strategy process. This was necessary as most EDs will not attend Wikimania in Cape Town this year, so a meeting in the context of an international event was not an option this time. Most EDs will participate in the various working groups and during the meeting common challenges and process questions were discussed. WMAT served as a host and coordinator.

Press conference with Katherine Maher[edit]

Basics
  • in a nutshell: on 1 July, Austria took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It means that Austria will lead the trilogue negotiations of the EU copyright reform. Thus the Austrian Government and the Parliament will negotiate the whole package, including “upload filters” (Art. 13), the press publishers right (Art. 11), and the exceptions that Wikimedia is advocating for. WMAT used the fortunate timing of Katherine Maher's visit in order to hold a press event and to raise awareness for the issue, together with partners from the Austrian netpolitical scene.

Netpolitical Evenings[edit]

Basics
  • in a nutshell: We co-hosted 6 netpolitical evenings as of June 2018, with an average of 50 participants, covering topics from EU advocacy to state of the art research around e-privacy. The event also has a loyal remote audience via live stream and broadcasting of various free radio stations across Austria. In addition, it became a valuable platform to find partners, participants, or multipliers for WMAT activities. The initiative is mainly volunteer run and cost neutral, the venue is an in-kind donation by the local hackspace metalab.
