For ten days, 12 people from around the world will come together to write and edit Wikipedia content about topics related to the peace, social justice, and Earth's climate.
This camp is part of the Wikipedia for Peace initiative. Members of Wikipedia for Peace believe that Wikipedia needs more and better content on peace, justice, and social movements. Service Civil International Austria and Wikimedia Österreich started Wikipedia for Peace in 2015. The first camp, Wikipedia for Peace 2015, took place in Vienna. Now, Wikimedia CH and SCI Switzerland have organised Switzerland's first Wikipedia for Peace event.
What is Service Civil International?
Service Civil International (SCI) is a peace organisation—and one of the largest non-profit networks of volunteer organisations. The first SCI workcamp was organised in 1920, close to Verdun, France, by the Swiss pacifist Pierre Cérésole. Through workcamps, SCI wants to increase international understanding; to raise awareness of global inequalities and people with fewer social opportunities; and to promote sustainability and responsible use of resources. In SCI workcamps, people from different countries and sociocultural backgrounds work together for two to four weeks to benefit a local non-profit initiative.
How is it funded?
Wikimedia CH supports the project financially. The money is used for food, accommodation, internet access, an excursion, and maybe other small, project-related costs. Participants pay their own travel costs to the project venue. SCI workcamps are usually low-budget projects, in which we intentionally try to live a simple and sustainable lifestyle with simple home-made cooking and simple accommodation (usually we sleep in bunk beds in scouts centres).
I like the idea. How can I support it?
Although the 2018 Climate4Peace Wikipedia Workcamp is full, here are some ways you can help:
- Help us improve articles
-
- Work with us to revise and improve the articles in our list.
- Our participants will write in a lot of different languages; it would be great for them to have feedback from people working in the Wikipedias of these languages.
- Start a Wikipedia for Peace camp
- We would like to see Wikipedia for Peace events in more parts of the world, addressing such topics as gender equality, civil rights, demilitarisation, refugee movements, and LGBT rights. If you would like to organise an event, contact the coordinator, User:Shikeishu, for assistance. You can get additional help through your local chapter of Wikimedia and Service Civil International.
Directions to the camp
The workcamp will take place at the Décentrale estate on Mont-Soleil.

- When you arrive at the train station in St-Imier, walk to the bottom station of the cable railway. The walk takes about 12 minutes.
- Take a cable car from the lower railway station to the upper station. The 400-metre ascent takes about four minutes.
- The Décentrale is a two-minute walk from the upper railway station.
This interactive map from OpenStreetMap shows the lower and upper railway stations, and the surrounding area.
