Suggest to non global User:Catherine Laurence

Apparently -revi undid the varnishing, they are sort of saying revi doesn't take care of their personal safety in the 1st sentence. For rest is a few comments like they feel that as compared to 3 years ago, wiki doesn't take IAR as tightly, as well as a note to Masumrezarock100 comment that they should use a new username. I think I shall translate it to Masumrezarock100, they are saying they are very apologetic to you, they had tried creating a new account after the varnishing but feel that people are condescending to them as a newbie and their identity is being exposed per OTRS, so new account doesn't help.

I don't think having this global will be useful, so I am seeking opinions of whether or not to add non global to this userpage. Regards, --Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 15:06, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying his words. I was having a hard time understanding the machine translated text by Google translate. It is an very unfortunate case. It can be very hard to act like a newbie all the time. I thought it is required to keep confidential information on OTRS confidential. It seems that is not the case anymore. (: I highly suggest Catherine to reach out to Trust and Safety team as they can support and advice him better. Just to clarify, are you suggesting that we "disable" their global userpage to prevent the page on meta showing up on other wikis? Or just blank the whole page all together? Masum Reza📞 15:19, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
That's extremely wrong. Information sent to OTRS is confidential, and I have no idea what they are referring to when they say that on their userpage. Vermont (talk) 15:32, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
It's an unfortunate situation where they misunderstood the purpose of vanishing and got annoyed when, after resuming normal editing, the vanishing was undone. They could have asked to be renamed to something else other than a vanished user string. Anyways, they know how global userpages work; if they don't want it to be global, then they can ask for that. We do not have any right or responsibility to do anything about it. Vermont (talk) 15:32, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I agree that it's unfortunate. I am just proposing we non global that page as it's alright for the content here but to be as a global page, it's marginally off-scope. I had seen cases that consensus here had modified some user userpages. As a reply to Masumrezarock100, I am not asking for blanking.--Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 15:36, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

Is it still a reason that this page to be fully protected? (There's no indication that this page itself is a policy.)--GZWDer (talk) 11:46, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

The comment on the protection says "official policy amended by OC's member" and I have no reason to argue that. Plus it is an OC and staff managed page, I suggest that you ask them directly. They have rights and can address any concerns that you have.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:05, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
I think the edit war of 2016 has settled, and there isn't any vandalism in the page history, so the protection IMO shall be removed. --Krd 08:42, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
Per Krd an (OC member), I have reduced protection to autoconfirmed. There are many other official policies that are staff managed that do not have this level of protection and concerns from four years prior have been addressed. If need for full protection arises, it can be raised at that point in time. ~riley (talk) 23:58, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Removal of +Autopatrol from User:MCC214

They had been warned not to tag LTA pages here and they simply blanked those remarks, seemingly they had read the warning. They did it again here which is not needed at all. Just a simple author blanked deletion request is needed at all. Given the history of their talkpage which quite a fair bit of editing issues are shown and most recently riley did point out more concerns and they continued editing without addressing, I am in the point that they should not have autopatrol flag (which they are able to tag other user userpages over the AF).--Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 10:21, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Multiple attempts have been made by multiple users to dialogue with User:MCC214 about their editing behavior; none have been dignified with a response. This includes when MCC was issued a 3 day block; the user returned to editing after archiving the block rationale without responding. As attempts to discuss this behavior have gone unanswered, I am going remove autopatrol without further discussion while issuing a warning as continuing this behavior may lead to another block or other restrictions. ~riley (talk) 20:07, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Hopefully they will engage in discussing their actions. Thanks for handling ~riley. --Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 11:43, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

False positive: "Antispam"

I was trying to add a reply to Talk:Sustainability#Climate_action, but it got flagged as spam. I have reason to believe it's a false positive.

Unfortunately, I can't attach the text here, because then this edit gets flagged as well. PassioEtDesiderium 21:14, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

@PassioEtDesiderium: You are correct that this is a false positive, however, it only impacts users with less than 2 edits - you should be fine now. Abuse filter for IP edits on broadcasts

Would you add an abuse filter to prevent ips from editing subpages of special:prefixindex/Global message delivery/Targets/ ? I don't think IPs can do anything productive there. I'm not sure if broadcasts could even be sent to IP talk pages.

If you want to go a step further: semi-protection of the pages is probably not a good idea as users might not be confirmed before wanting to edit this. However, maybe not-confirmed editors should shouldn't be editing other users entries. Jura1 (talk) 11:19, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Comment Comment presumably only in the main namespace, rather than to impact the translations that are attached to some of the pages, and would fall under the PAGENAME paths. @Jura1: Do you have some examples of what IP addresses have been doing, as it may be worthwhile customising a disallow notice to better guide them, maybe even look at something translated, or to a landing page.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:18, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Wikilover90, you're obviously trusted, but could you please give us an example of a message you would like to send? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 09:14, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Hello Martin Urbanec, the messages would be about outreach for inviting community to join the project. Also to local organizers about different tasks and deadlines on their talk pages. For additional context, I have been drafting mass messages for Wikipedia Asian Month 2018, Wikipedia Asian Month 2019, Wiki Loves Women India 2019 and Commons:Wiki Loves Love 2019 as the co-ordinator and international team member for WAM. But many times, especially in the current period, some of the volunteers in our team who have the rights were not available due to some personal health issues. As the co-ordinator, I would like to have the right so I can support and work for timely communications needed with local organizer and community at large. Request for Mass messaging rights

Hi, I would like to have massmessage rights to send out the newsletter of Wikimedia Nederland, delivered to talk pages. We only send the newsletter to people on the list. I work at Wikimedia Nederland. Thank you! --Germien Cox (talk) 08:45, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Per Special:Diff/18666288, it was already confirmed this is a chapter employee. Right seems to be used in the past => re-granting for another year. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 08:58, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Request for "MassMessage sender" rights

I would like to request for MassMessage sender rights. I am a Wikimedian for more than 8 years and active in projects like Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource. I am the co-founder of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group (WBG), I am also working as a Wikidata Advisor using this account. As part of my CIS-A2K work, on behalf of which I publish newsletters for WikiProject India or as a volunteer organizer of campaigns like WLM etc, or as an affiliate founder and coordinator of WBG projects, I frequently need to send messages to relevant persons or project village pumps. Currently, I have to ask other users with massmessage rights to send messages on behalf of me. In this regard, it would be helpful, if I am granted this right. Thanks -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 06:59, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Bodhisattwa, could you link us some of your previous mass-message requests? Also, do you plan to use the right for your volunteer activities, work activities, or both? ---Martin Urbanec (talk) 09:11, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Please link to an example of a mailing list you plan to use. — xaosflux Talk 19:43, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Martin Urbanec and Xaosflux:, sorry for my late reply as I am travelling and as I am replying from my mobile, where I am not much comfortable to edit, please bear with me if I have to save multiple times while providing the links which you needed. This is one such mass message request from me as an organizer of WLM 2019 in India and this is another request, where I needed to send Wikidata newsletters to users. Yes, I intend to use the right to send messages for both my volunteer and work accounts. Xaosflux, most of the time, I send messages to mailings lists of wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org (India), wikimedia-in-wb-l@lists.wikimedia.org (West Bengal), wikidata-l@lists.wikimedia.org (Wikidata) and wikisource-l@lists.wikimedia.org (Wikisource) etc. as required. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 01:27, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
Hi Bodhisattwa, there is a slight misunderstanding I guess. We didn't mean e-mail mailinglist, but a massmessage one. An example is Distribution_list/Technical_Village_Pumps_distribution_list. What list would you like to use? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 06:31, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec:, now, it's clear. I was also confused. Anyway, here is one such list. Bodhisattwa (talk) 14:59, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
Done I've granted the rights for one year, to expire on 2021-01-31. If needed after that date, you can re-request using this page. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:16, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Update Main Page to automatically display localised version

Hi! Since october 2018 update, Main Page have been displayed in English by default, readers have to choose their language in bottom frame each time they visit Main Page. We can fix that issue using the same trick which is used by {{LangSwitch}}

and some other templates, based on {{int:lang}} automatically localised interface message.

Can a sysop do:

  1. Move Main Page to Template:Main Page/v2, including translation pages.
  2. Wait for moving is finished (it should be entered in Page translation log).
  3. Recreate Main Page with current content of Main page sandbox.

You also can remove Template:Main Page/v3 which I have created and which is unuseful. —Pols12 (talk) 14:46, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

  • @Pols12: Hi Pols12, thought I would drop you a line. I can't speak for other admins, but the reason I won't touch this is that it involves moving the main page. If there was more discussion and consensus to do this, I think you'd have better chances. ~riley (talk) 01:17, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

I understand. But moving the page should create a redirection, like for any page. And the correction should take less than 1 minute… We could also copy the content instead of moving the page, but we would lose page history (so author credits) that way. I’m annoucing on Babel to receive more support… —Pols12 (talk) 02:11, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

@Pols12: what was the behavior you were seeing prior to October 2018? — xaosflux Talk 02:20, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
@Xaosflux:, I was probably wrong: looking at the code, I see no reason to view an other language than English. I believed the page were displayed in user interface language, as I would like it does today. —Pols12 (talk) 04:20, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
From September 2018 to December 2018, MediaWiki:Mainpage was set to "Special:MyLanguage/Main Page", which would have caused the behavior you report. But it also broke various other things that need MediaWiki:Mainpage to not be a special page, so it was reverted. BJorsch (WMF) (talk) 14:26, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks BJorsch, so this behavior was not my invention! Since using Special:MyLanguage is not possible, using a conditional statement based on int:lang is probably a good workaround, isn’t it? Note currently, the behavior is inconsistent: some parts are based on page language whereas some other ones are based on int:lang. —Pols12 (talk) 20:01, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

This discussion might help: (link).

I’ve managed to make it function properly, in cases of Главна страна (source code) (and also to a minutely lesser degree at Glavna strana [source code]). This doesn't work if pages are used as mere redirects.

Notice that the page (a) has no tag ((translate-tag-translate-link-desc) at the top of the translated page, and (b) also has some form of this template transcluded somehow at the bottom of the page which enables better linking with old style main pages.

Moving (with redirects left behind) wouldn't work, but transcluding in completely new pages could.

All that is necessary is, using d:Q5296 names for page titles of translated pages, and also creating two mediawiki definitions per translated page, similarly to this: MediaWiki:Mainpage/pl, MediaWiki:Mw-mainpage-url/pl, but with the content Main_page/pl

Additional benefit would be the possibility of using the transcluded pages as wikilinks, and also the possibility of finding the pages through the internal search (with drop-down).

It worked perfectly before, but now… these changes should solve the immediate situation. Hope this helps. Best wishes. -- Несмир Кудилович (разговор) 09:09, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Would it show the new translations, if the old translation templates were to be deleted, as was the case with Template:Main Page/Intro/en? Currently it forces the old translation templates instead of new style translations, but only if pages with transcluded content are used. -- Несмир Кудилович (разговор) 10:17, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer Nesmir Kudilovic, but I don’t want to create another page (I find that is useless), I just want users see Main Page in their UI language when they click top-left corner Meta-Wiki logo. Besides, if you want to transclude the main page, you should not transclude Template:Main Page which is deprecated, but Main Page instead (same goes for their respective localised versions). —Pols12 (talk) 20:01, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Please mark it for translation, thankyou. -- CptViraj (📧) 11:37, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Cannot be done until the page is correctly prepared for translation first. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:46, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
