Priority for global names by registration date?[edit]

Hello, my English username "gladstone" from 29 Jan 2005 has been given to a Portuguese account registered 36 days ago on 17 March 2015. Don't earlier registrations get priority and how can i request this? Thanks Gladstone~enwiki (talk) 10:33, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

@Gladstone~enwiki: The account creation date you see is when the Portuguese account was converted to the global account; that's the global registration date. The account was actually registered at some point pre-2004, as it doesn't have a user creation log and that only happens when accounts are that old. The account also has more edits, so it received the global name. You can read the rationale here. You do not have to keep this new username, you can pick out a new or similar name and fill out a simple form to get a new username: Special:GlobalRenameRequest. Merging accounts (Poloch)[edit]

My account on French Wiktionary has been renamed to Poloch~frwiktionary. But the Poloch on all other projects is actually the same person (me!). So I now have 2 accounts on French Wiktionary. Could you please merge "Poloch~frwiktionary" with "Poloch"? Of course, if needed I can prove I own both accounts, of course. Just send me an email to the addresses attached to both accounts, or ask me to write a message on my user page with both accounts, or whatever! Thanks!

Poloch (talk) 16:41, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@Poloch: please leave a request at Steward requests/Username changes. --Stryn (talk) 18:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Renaming/mergin accounts (J-beda)[edit]

I've just gotten a message about , but Special:MergeAccount seems to indicate that I have already got a whole bunch of signons merged under my account (for example my most activity has been at ) So, what has been missed at ? Perhaps my email address was slightly different in the two cases? Should I update the J-beda~commonswiki email address to match the J-beda one? Will that magically get them all to merge? J-beda (talk) 12:31, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

I've just changed the email address of user:J-beda~commonswiki (talk) to match the email address of user:J-beda (talk), will they now be able to be merged? How do I go about doing that? J-beda~commonswiki (talk) 14:40, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@J-beda: If you want to get Special:CentralAuth/J-beda~commonswiki and Special:CentralAuth/J-beda merged please leave a request at Steward requests/Username changes. However, J-beda~commonswiki has no edits (excluding 1 on Meta now), so you can just stop using the account. --Stryn (talk) 18:35, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Renaming account (Togo)[edit]

Hi, I have been using Togo at EN, DE and ES wikipedia and apparently also at Now when I go and want to unify my accounts I cant, because apparently a much later registered Togo@pl beat me to it! Now I see that that PL account has been blocked indefinitely. Still I can't unify my accounts which I had much longer than that pl account exists! tells me they don't even find my ES account - have to investigate why: List of local accounts Local wiki Attached on Method Blocked Edit count Groups 14:40, 17 March 2015 home wiki(?) Blocked indefinitely. Reason: Użytkownik zmarł 13,153 not attached not attached — 1,539 not attached not attached — 392

at any rate I should not lose my easy to remember and type username because of an indefinitely blocked account! Can you help me with this, and also restore my simple account? I see my ES account has already been renamed ( ), so now I am supposed to have 4 totally different hard to remember names, just because your automated scripts are so buggy?

As Togo already belongs to other user, you need to choose another username. We can merge all of your accounts, but please leave a request at Steward requests/Username changes. --Stryn (talk) 18:42, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Did you get any information different from what I found? The Togo on PL is 'Blocked indefinitely', I have 4 Wikipedia accounts Togo and I want to keep it that way! HELP!!! --Togo (talk) 23:47, 22 April 2015 (MEST)

Renaming account (Vanya)[edit]

I just got a message about renaming one of my wikibooks accounts. The Wikipedia Vanya account is also owned by me! It'd be great if both the accounts could be merged ?

All those accounts at Special:CentralAuth/Vanya belongs to you and won't be renamed. Do you have more accounts? --Stryn (talk) 18:46, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Renaming account (jimbreen)[edit]

I just got *another* message about renaming one of my wikimedia accounts. I think someone has confused two of my accounts in the merger and thought they were two different people. The email was sent to "" which is an address I haven't used for many years, and it related to wikibooks. I have logged in to do this reply using my regular wikimedia handle. The renaming of the wikibooks one is not needed; just merge it with the wikimedia one with the email "".

ThanksJimBreen (talk) 07:06, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

@JimBreen: what was that one wikimedia account? What are the accounts that you own? If you have many accounts now, you can ask for merging them, just leave a request at Steward requests/Username changes. --Stryn (talk) 18:54, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
I just got a *third* rename message, this time changing me to "Jimbreen~mediawikiwiki". The last one was renamimg me to "imbreen~wikibooks". I really only use Wikipedia, and I've been "JimBreen" there for many, many years. Who is this phantom Jim Breen who you've allocated my account name too? He can't have been using Wikipedia. JimBreen (talk) 09:28, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Renaming account Algen[edit]

My account (Algen) is registered for 5 Wiki sites (most active in Russian segment: N>1000), but this name is also belongs to 6 other language users. Five of them are inactive and the sixth blocked 4 years ago. Can I keep my name for myself globally? I've read Talk:Global rename_policy#Amendment to usurpation policy. This is my case. But what could I do to use this amendment? Algen (talk) 23:27, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

@Algen: Hi there, you logged in the other day and in doing so attached your account to your global account: Special:CentralAuth/Algen. By doing so your accounts will no longer be renamed. Once the renaming of the other accounts takes place next week you will own the name "Algen" on all the wikis. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 23:37, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

SUL and legitimate sockpuppetry[edit]

Hi, it's me again (I've left you another question today). I have another "old" doubt I am trying to figure out with some expert. I tried to ask here but I recieved the standard copy-and-paste-from-guideline answer, the one people say when they don't want to say something that is uncorrect, but it wasn't very helpful. I've also asked in some personal talk with no success. I am curious because if we are going to have just SULs, "good" sockpuppets and secondary nicknames should be geared under some sort of general coordination as well, but the situation seems quite confused.

So, in the timeline of SUL is there any plan to create a general coordination to declare/create legitimate sockpuppet in the future? or to spread the information abou evil sockpuppet among other wikis? Should this coordination be somehow necessary soon or later?--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:02, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in response, being up top I kept forgetting to get to this one. I don't currently have a plan, because this aspect of the great renaming, the social one, is up for communities to decide locally for the most part. There are a handful of big wikis that are actively represented here are meta, but there are far more that are not, so I'm not even sure where such a coordination should begin if it's to take place.
In other words, I don't know, I've been tasked with flipping the switch only :/ Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Impressive, I do have the feeling there is no long-term strategy concerning this aspect. If you have some advice, I will try to start a real discussion somewhere. I accept advice on the "timing" as well. I understand that it is a busy season (and I did my best to provide more soldiers to win this "battle") but I hope that in the future, when the situation has stabilized, this can be addressed. You can't have a "global" SUL and a "local" definition of legitime sockpuppetry, IMHO, because that SP account is de facto global when you create it, and the reason(s) you may need it are in theory quite similar for every platform.
Another issue: there are special users who have the power to create a lot of accounts in a small time for wikipedia trainings or classes. I am not, but I help newbies and I know this exists. I haven't checked but I do have the feeling that this is also something that hasn't been fully "standardized" within the SUL process. --Alexmar983 (talk) 22:03, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
To me, in my absolutely personal opinions here, the biggest issue that has to be reconciled is the use of role accounts, and I do see the bigger context of other uses, but role accounts are likely first in needing to be addressed in the SUL world. When de:User:Company is not allowed to be en:User Company in the global world, we've lost in a way the whole point of tying accounts together. User:Company should be so all around. The same applies to your other scenarios. So perhaps the place to start is with a meta discussion about role accounts. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 04:57, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
Clarification: I'm simply putting forward here an example of where two local policies differ sharply and in the new, finalized SUL world there are ramifications to the global accounts trying to act at local levels. These policy conflicts might be worth discussing. I'm not taking sides on any particular issue. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:21, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
I've never heard of this definition, "role accounts", but I got the idea. that's another point I haven't considered, but you're right. But where should we start the discussion? General forum? SUL finalization talk page linked form general forum? Where have people discussed so far the long-term "consequences" of the SUL?--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:46, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
Good question, it's all be scattered everywhere for a decade. Talk page watchers: thoughts? This is organic community discussion at this point. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:06, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
in my own experience, the standard procedure with scattered issues should be: start a thread in the central "forum" or "village pump" but linked from every other related page (i.e. talks of Global rename policy, Global renamers, Single_User_Login_finalisation_announcement, Help:Unified login... ). Main self-declared goals: 1) initial brainstorming 2) define any other relevant related issues 3) decide together the place where this should be centrally addressed in the future. The discussion can be moved from the village pump to the new talk page once finished.--Alexmar983 (talk) 23:42, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
the best place it is the "request for comment" page, we can link to forum all arounds the top wiki. Another issue: if I remember some SUL includes local wikimedia chapter wiki (e.g. Brasil), whilst some national wikimedia websites are not integrated in the SUL system (e.g. Italy). Is there a plan to integrate them or this will never happen some day? Are new wikimedia websites by default integrated in the SUL system (if there is legal issue, of course) or not?--Alexmar983 (talk) 23:30, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
and here is another issue. SUL for old and locally blocked account. Examples can be found here or here (concerning itwiki, not the other two). These users are active on other projects, after all and they should deserve the "functionality" of a SUL (this is also a perfect example of how a local "infinite" blocks do not play anymore the role they had years ago)--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:57, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

I am the german "Pokernikus". Is that my problem? --Pokernikus (talk) 01:27, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

@Pokernikus: When you logged in the other day your accounts attached and will no longer be renamed. You can now log in as Pokernikus on any Wikimedia wiki. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 02:00, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Try to get my name[edit]

Hi! My story can be seen here. In short a user in de wiki usurped the existing user stefan a few days before SUL, therefore going against the intent of the SUL rules, he was an admin and therefore got the SUL account for a account that he usurped 17 days earlier and I had been using for 5 years before that (I had checked just a few weeks before and I was sure to get the SUL account), I have tried to argue this but have been told that there is not a common place to discuss, now it looks like there is a common place that can take my account so it should be able to be discussed? please advice if there is anything I can do and where to bring this up. SilkyShark (talk) 15:24, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@SilkyShark: you might raise a discussion at Talk:Steward_requests/Username_changes. I have no idea how it will go. I'm sympathetic to your situation, this is one of the reasons why the final claim of global name was not left wide open, but it cannot change the past. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 05:12, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Another account renaming question[edit]

Hi. I got a message on my Commons talk page stating that my Commons account "Bob." will be renamed into something cryptic. Why is that necessary? My Commons account is attached to my SUL "Bob." since the beginning of SUL several years ago, i.e. there shouldn't be any name clash. --Bob. (talk) 15:49, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

You don't need to care about the message that you got on Commons. You own the global account so you're safe from the renaming. --Stryn (talk) 17:02, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for your message and congratulations on your impeccable Italian! I need to take lessons from you!!! Question: is the "other" user Mondschein still active? Kind regards, Andreas (Mondschein)

I know, right? Suddenly I know sixty languages :) But seriously, if you were offended by my message in Italian when I'm clearly not an Italian speaker, I'm sorry about that, but the global community would much rather provide localized information than just slapping English on everyone.
To the point though, all of what I believe are your accounts have been unified by login. You can see them at Special:CentralAuth/Mondshein. If the unattached accounts are yours, you can log in to lmo:Special:MergeAccount and unify them by password. If they are not yours, you will own that name on those wikis once this process is complete in a few weeks.
Thank you for your time, my apologies for the confusion. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 05:08, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi again, and thanks for the timely response! Now, if I could only get the happy folks at my work to answer emails as swiftly as you do, we would be a much more productive nation and we could probably abstain ourselves from invading just about every country on the face of the earth in order to exploit their natural resources, but I digress... :-)
What do you know? I noticed that you even speak perfect English and German!!!! Truly impressive!
On a serious note: I am sorry but I am not "Mondshein", rather "Mondschein". At the moment I am active as Mondschein on the ALS, BAR, LMO, and RM Wikis. On the German Wiki I am active as WenInteressierts, whereas on the English one I am Mondschein_English.
Any way I could possibly consolidate all these nicks into one, i.e. "Mondschein", since I am pretty sure I am the only "Mondschein" who is actually active on any of the aforementioned Wikis, or any Wikis, for that matter?
Kind regards,
Ah, sorry about the typo in the link, I was looking at the correct account on CentralAuth though. It appears that all "Mondschein" accounts that belong to you are unified and will not be renamed: Special:CentralAuth/Mondschein. Your other two accounts, Mondschein_English and WenInteressierts, will be able to be merged into the "Mondschein" account in about a month when global user merge is deployed to stewards. You can file a request then and it will be handled in a timely manner. Until then, or whenever you choose to have your accounts merged, you will be able to use "Mondschein" on the English and German Wikipedias, and all other wikis, after the other accounts are renamed this month. I hope this helps, thanks for your patience. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 05:07, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your reply. I am happy to hear I will finally be able to just log into one account and be good to go on every Wiki. How will I be able to tell that the big global user merge has gone through, in other words how will I be able to tell that it is finally time to lodge my request to have Mondschein_English and WenInteressierts meerged into Mondschein? Many thanks again for all you work! Andreas (Mondschein)
The easiest way would probably subscribe to Tech News, it will certainly be announced there where all subscribers can read it. I'll also be posting to various village pumps at the time as well. It's a new tool, however, so I don't want to overload the stewards with requests off the bat until we are certain it is working 100% as it should. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 23:39, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

KlaasZ4usV (was:Patio)[edit]

Ciao Keegan P,

Thank you very much indeed for renaming my old account Patio (since February 2005 at Wikipedia in Dutch) to KlaasZ4usV reflecting my new sig. Keep up the good work! Kind regards from central Italy,  Klaas `Z4␟` V 08:01, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
Cheers! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 01:56, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Serten II and Serten[edit]

Hallo Keegan, as pointed out in and the account Serten competes with another Serten on WP in general. I would like to have a generic account, suggestion "Sertenario" including my old credentials. OK? Serten II (talk) 08:28, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

@Serten II: I believe you own the Serten account and logged in with it on 22 March, according to CentralAuth: Special:CentralAuth/Serten. If you can still use that account then you are fine, your accounts attached and will not be renamed. If you'd like to rename to Sertenario you can do that w:Special:GlobalRenameRequest but if you can still use the Serten account you're welcome to just use that. Once account unification is complete and all accounts are global the stewards will have a tool that can merge separately-named accounts upon request. You'll need to wait for that. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:23, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi. First the former Problem with the Serten account seems to be gone. I can use "serten" on all wiki expect turkish and wikidata. Insofar I would be happy with a merger of Serten II into Serten. Could you start that please, Keegan? Serten (talk) 19:03, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
@Serten: please leave a request at Steward requests/Username changes. --Stryn (talk) 19:35, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

User Name Change sultankhadar[edit]

Hi, I have been actively working in wikipedia from 2007 in English, Telugu and Kannada Wiki languages. I saw your notice from changing my name from sultankhadar to sultankhadar~tewiki. I think you misunderstood that some other user is using my id in other wikipedia, i.e in english. its actually me only. I request you not to change my username in telugu wikipedia and not to discourage me. Let me know if you want any further clarifications.--Sultankhadar (talk) 14:41, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

@Sultankhadar: When you logged in the other day and yesterday, your accounts attached and will not longer be renamed. Thanks! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 01:56, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

User name change Muso[edit]

Of course I use the name username for all Wikimedia projects: Wikitravel, German and English Wikipedia and also commons. What is wrong with that? It is stupid that I cannot log in once and use ALL Wikimedia projects. I mean for example with google, I have only one account and can use gmail and also and google analytics. So either merge all my Muso accounts or leave them as they are.

thanks and regards --Muso (talk) 21:43, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

@Muso: Hi there. When you logged in the other day all of your accounts were attached to your global account and they will not be renamed. Once the other accounts that use that name are renamed this coming week, you will be able to log in once and for all to all Wikimedia projects. That's the whole point :) Keegan (WMF) (talk) 01:54, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Dear Keegan, In respect to your message, please note that my name is not longer "Wikinombre". I have changed my name to "BuenaGente" few years ago. Sorry for the delay in my response.

You got the message because Usuario discusión:Wikinombre was a redirect to your current account. It's just a bug in the message delivery tool. --Stryn (talk) 19:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

You have renamed Userboxes[edit]

You have renamed Userboxes. Why? --Дагиров Умар (talk) 22:35, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Dear Keegan, the renaming of user accounts has also badly affect most of the userboxes on Croatian Wikipedia. Regards, Maestro Ivanković (talk) 09:06, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
It was a user sub page (page in the user namespace) that was moved as part of the SUL finalization. --Stryn (talk) 09:16, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Can't access to old account[edit]

Thanks for this message:

"This account has been renamed as part of single-user login finalisation. If you own this account you can log in using your previous username and password for more information. If you do not like this account's new name, you can choose your own using this form after logging in: Special:GlobalRenameRequest."

But I can no longer access my old account. And when I ask for a new password so that I can, the e-mail never arrives in my in-box! Rosa Lichtenstein. 06:30, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Just use your old username and password when you log in? Or you have forgot your password? --Stryn (talk) 19:30, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Renomear usuario[edit]

User name change Aircombat~enWikiBooks[edit]

I don't know why my account name was changed -- I've had the username Aircombat across ALL the MediaWiki sites (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, etc) for years now. This doesn't make any sense, nobody else should have my user name. While reading the notice that my username has been changed, it shows my username as Aircombat at the top of the page. I don't get this!! AirCombat (talk) 13:56, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

  • I think I know what happened. For some reason, my username was miscapitialized. My username should be AirCombat, not Aircombat. Not sure why this happened, as when I check the Special:CentralAuth/AirCombat I can see all of my accounts... AirCombat (talk) 14:02, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Renamed accounts on Commons and broken image attribution[edit]

Hello, will you also fix all the broken "author" links from image information templates on Commons to the new ~commonswiki usernames? i think there are thousands of affected images uploaded by now renamed (and often inactive) accounts. what will happen to them, is there a solution already? example: [4]: several hundreds of images like File:Klatschmohn in Weizenfeld.JPG now attribute the photo to a non-existent user (see red link). Holger1959 (talk) 15:35, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

  • This is a much greater problem and not only about attribution. In a lot of situations, users have signed discussions with ~~~~, which creates a link to the user page and to the user talk page. These links are now broken and point to someone else's talk page, so it could be very confusing when reading old discussions. I think that links should be fixed on all pages. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:15, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
This seems like a serious problem. Is there any task filed on Phabricator? --Stryn (talk) 19:18, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
I don't believe so. That'd be useful for someone to file. As for author links and signatures, it's been very clearly pointed out to me by communities that I have no authority to change signatures or other places of user-generated attribution. I've asked in several different places for someone to please create a tool on labs that could do this using OAuth, the actual mechanics of it is quite simple, but I've been repeatedly told that nobody cares by communities, it's disruptive, it should be the burden of the individual author. I disagree. I care, many other people care, so it'd be great if someone could set up such a tool. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 02:42, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
Keegan, i can not find such a discussion for Commons. the situation with image attribution (especially with MediaViewer) is a bit different from signatures and other old text links (which is basically the same here as with normal username changes we had before). Can you please take care for this Commons issue? maybe you (or someone else from the WMF team) can post suggestions how to fix these problems at c:Commons:Village pump and/or c:Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. i am sure you will not get the answer "we don't care". Holger1959 (talk) 18:48, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Your maintenance script have broken the whole Userbox system of Spanish Wikipedia[edit]

In Spanish Wikipedia the most of Userboxes are stored under virtual user account Userbox, because cannot go to Template namespace. Why in the world a English Wikipedia blocked-by-vandalism user have the priority over a maintenance account of a whole wiki? This MUST be repaired soonly. --Zerabat (discusión) 20:26, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

This task is about accounts. Those user subpages have been renamed back and they work again as templates. Sorry for the inconvenience. A permanent and consistent solution would be to use a new localised name and fix page inclusions. --Vriullop (talk) 09:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Rename/SUL of my account @[edit]

Hi Keegan,

I recently got the notice that my account Panda@zhwiki @zh-yuewiki @zhnews @zhdict has been renamed due to the SUL process. Actually my account was created much earlier than Panda@enwiki who also has disappeared for a long time since 2008, but I am still contributing to zhwiki for 10 years. So I would like to ask a help to usurp the username of Panda@enwiki. Thank you very much!

Hey Panda, unfortunately it's not possible to usurp the global account :/ Please choose another username and leave a request at Steward requests/Username changes. --Stryn (talk) 19:17, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi Stryn, thank you for your reply. I am very disappointed that the SUL policy is actually discouraging a current active user by promoting a zombie user who is occupying the username. Anyway, I accepted it and thank you and Keegan both. --Panda~zhwiki (talk) 18:27, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Rename account[edit]

I have noticed that you are rather active in renaming global accounts. My account is global but I tried to rename my account to a local unused account "Engelhart". The local bureaucrats seems to have given up their role and the process seemes to have stopped. See answer Usurped the old account, but not yet made a rename of your current account. . The account Engelhart seems to be somehow usurped. Can you please help or advise me of what to do to get renamed to Engelhart? Regards and thanks. --Engelhart.e (talk) 18:42, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

@Engelhart.e: if you want to get renamed please leave a request to Steward_requests/Username_changes or easier; by through Special:GlobalRenameRequest. --Stryn (talk) 17:04, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Rename account[edit]

Hi there,

if it's all the same, I'd like to keep my username the same as it is in Wikipedia. I was Dmccabe here, I'm still Dmccabe in Wikipedia and in Wikieducator. This is me: And also this:

Cheers, Declan

You will keep your username, "Dmccabe". --Stryn (talk) 17:08, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Account Othertwice: all mine - user merge with autocreated[edit]

hi! My account name accross all platforms is and always was Othertwice. Not just here, even on Twitter. As for all wikipedia sites the Othertwice accounts are all mine. How can I merge them all to be Othertwice instead sitting with the usability nightmare Othertwice~commonswiki that creates an additional username while Othertwice as a main account in Wikimedia is mine, anyway? Users originally just had to take out another account with commons (this is why I have a second account here, not because I wanted to) - but for usability I named it the same way like my main account in wikipedia. How can I change this and merge with my original user name? Thanks. P.S.: Just in case someone else should have taken out my username elsewhere (not that I could find such an account) mine was certainly years before. So for fairness reasons this very unique account name I keep for user friendliness everywhere should not go to someone stealing that name. Thank you. I understand that people can be interested to steal that name as it is well known and has a very high ranking especially on Twitter. Your first announcement didn't reach me btw. - I got notified only when the cange was done. :-( In terms of frustrating the community this was definitely a good one. Othertwice (talk) 12:03, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@Othertwice: the good news is that you own the global account and you can now use it to log into any other Wikimedia wiki without creating a new account. Your Commons account was renamed because it was not attached to your global account. In a few weeks or so the stewards will have a tool to merge your account back into your proper name upon request here on Meta. Until then you can continue to edit Commons under the Othertwice name. Dear Peterzell

I was inactive the last month. When I returned to the Wikipedia, I found out my account was renamed by Maintenance script. I request Achilleus as a different account name using Special:GlobalRenameRequest beacuse Achilleus name is not in use. Could you rename my account as Achilleus?

--Akhilleus~trwiki (talk) 15:51, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@Akhilleus~trwiki: there is already Achilleus, so you can't get that name. Please choose another username. --Stryn (talk) 19:00, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Unify request (Étincelle)[edit]

I asked for my renaming from "Étincelle" to "Parcelle incandescente" on fr.wp and it went swimmingly. I just forgot to ask the same for my account "Étincelle" on fr.wikt, now renamed "Étincelle~frwiktionary". Could you please attach the account on wiktionary to my global account ? Do you need any confirmation from my local account ?

Regards, Parcelle incandescente (talk) 16:59, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@Parcelle incandescente: I wonder why you changed your username, because now Étincelle account is free and everyone can take it if they want to. There was no need to rename your account, sure if you wanted so anyway... You can merge Étincelle~frwiktionary account with Parcelle incandescente. Just leave a request at Steward requests/Username changes. --Stryn (talk) 18:58, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
@Stryn: I was told I would have to be renamed : see there for Keegan's message. The name isn't free : it is in use, or rather was in use and is thus blocked (even though the user eventually choose another name). If it were in any way possible, I would have chosen to remain "Étincelle", I liked the name. Regards, Parcelle incandescente (talk) 19:12, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
@Parcelle incandescente: you're right, sorry, yesterday when I looked at it I didn't see that it existed, well maybe I mistyped it then... I can move your "Étincelle~frwiktionary" to "Parcelle incandescente". You just need to confirm that it's your account. You can log in using "Étincelle~frwiktionary" on frwiktionary and write a confirmation message at Regards, --Stryn (talk) 19:25, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

de:Benutzer:Vorlage, now de:Benutzer:Vorlage~dewiki[edit]

Hello Keegan, could you please have a look at the on-going discussion at de:AAF#Babel-Vorlagen about this account which has been renamed today at de.wikipedia? „Vorlage“ meens „template“ in German. Is it possible that this user could be renamed back? There are lots of babel templates which have been moved which were in this user’s namespace (more than 3000). And there are hundreds of thousands pages which use these templates. It’s a special account for the babel templates, such as in the Wikiversity, but there just 6 babel templates exist. So it would be better to rename the Wikiversity account or put both accounts together to just one SUL account. But I suppose, that there were two different users who created these accounts. So how can the problem be solved? There are discussions to move all templates back with a bot (or a sysop does it), so it must be clear, if the account can be renamed back, before all templates are being moved back. Please tell us soon, what can be done about this. Noone seems to know which user created the Wikiversity account. And perhaps also noone knows the user who created the de account. See Special:CentralAuth/Vorlage and Special:CentralAuth/Vorlage~dewiki. If the templates are moved back into the not-anymore-existing user namespace of de:Benutzer:Vorlage, then they will be in a non-existing user namespace for all time, because I suppose, the inactive Wikiversity user won’t create a new de-account automatically. This seems not to be very well, does it? But if re-renaming can’t be done, there won’t be any other possibility. Greetings --Winternacht (talk) 19:08, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@Winternacht: it seems like it'd be reasonable for the German community to ask for usurpation in this case. @DerHexer: what do you think? Is that feasible? Keegan (WMF) (talk) 02:35, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
Well, in this special case I'd simply usurp the account and move all pages back. The 2007 account highly likely not return. But a request on dewikiversity is also possible. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:20, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
Both accounts are from 2006, the de account is the older one of both (Febr. 2006, Wiktionary: Dec. 2006). Yesterday evening, a sysop (User:Umherirrender) already moved all (around) 3142 pages back to the old places, so the renamed user now hasn’t any user pages anymore, they are all back at de:Spezial:Präfixindex/Benutzer:Vorlage/, where they should stay forever and not be moved again wherever. Is it possible to merge those accounts (and without possible email addresses in the account, and which password of which of the users will be used, so which one of them can log in after that?) without moving the pages once more, so that they stay in place there? It is not clear, if with new renaming or account merging the pages are being moved once again to another place. Now, all pages are in a not-existing user namespace, not a good salution. If DerHexer can merge the accounts to only one, that would be good. What shall be done to achieve this? --Winternacht (talk) 12:43, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
By the way: This page tells that there now shall be 1623 pages in this user’s namespace which isn’t true, see Präfixindex (and no talk pages). Why is there wrong information on the info page? Seems to be another bug. --Winternacht (talk) 12:51, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

I try this, don’t know, if it’s right this way: Steward requests/Username changes#Vorlage~dewiki@dewiki / Vorlage~global. --Winternacht (talk) 16:29, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Rinominazione registrazione - Renamed account[edit]

Salve Keegan.

Ho letto l'avviso che la mia registrazione "defiant" su wiki è stata rinominata perchè in conflitto con un'altra con lo stesso nome. Vorrei però sapere con quale criterio è stata rinominata la mia registrazione e non quella dell'altro utente. E' possibile saperlo? Grazie. Lino.

Hi Keegan I've read the notice about my account "defiant" on wiki, that has been renamed due a conflict with another account having the same user name. I would like know which criteria has been used to determinate the renaming of my account instead of the other one. Could I know why? Thanks Lino

Renamed Account After Recovered Username[edit]

I went through the process of getting the username that I wanted, but I think my account was renamed after this had been processed. Not sure what to do now. --Letik~enwiki (talk) 16:25, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

@Letik~enwiki: It seems that User:Xeno mistakenly renamed the account on Commons from Letik to Llbbl. Do you own the account Llbbl on Commons? If not, then we can rename the Commons account back to Letik and rename you to Llbbl. --Stryn (talk) 16:54, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
@Stryn: I want Llbbl account name. I don't know what needs to happen now. I tried resetting password for it but didn't work. Account still exists so can't create a new one? Very unfamiliar with Usurpations or whatever if I was supposed to do something after that had been processed to get access to the account. I don't have access to it now. Please advise. Thx. --Letik~enwiki (talk) 17:23, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
@Libbl: should be done now, please login with your new "Llbbl" username. --Stryn (talk) 17:33, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

unify request[edit]

Hi, it seems the automatic merging tool didn't quite work right in my case. I have an account through the german wikipedia ( on the same email address as this account. While the original account has been kept, this one has been renamed and the unify tool seemingly didn't work. Could you please merge this account Gsnerf~enwiki with my other account gsnerf? Account information are the same on both, thanks! --Gsnerf~enwiki (talk) 16:29, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

your user renaming on Commons is braking licenses and author attribution links[edit]

Hi I just run into files which were transcluding c:User:Alx 91/license and which no longer have license after renaming c:User:Alx 91 to c:User:Alx 91~commonswiki. Also all the author links to c:User:Alx 91 are now pointing to deleted pages. Are you planning some bot runs to fix those issues. I do not know how widespread this problem is but c:User:Alx 91/license was used on 513 files that now do not have a license. I personally never liked personalized licenses in the user namespace and each time I have a chance I try to replace them with something that looks the same but has the call to license template in the file page, but there are a lot odd pages on Commons. If you reply, please ping me on Commons or threw email as I usually do not watch pages on Wikimedia. --Jarekt (talk) 17:19, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

By the way en:User:Alx_91 and c:User:Alx 91 belonged to the same guy according to his contact info. But now they have a different usernames. May be they should be unified? --Jarekt (talk) 17:29, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
User:Jarekt: See also #Renamed accounts on Commons and broken image attribution above. This affects lots of accounts, not just this one. Lots of links in signatures in old discussions are broken on all projects (including Commons).
de:Spezial:Linkliste/Benutzer:Stefan2 shows lots of pages which point to my user page on dewiki, but the links are meant to point to the user page of a different user whose account was recently renamed as part of the SUL finalisation. It would be nice to have all of the links (and also a few links to the talk page) updated to prevent confusion. --Stefan2 (talk) 17:45, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
A few examples of recently renamed licenses:
--Jarekt (talk) 18:38, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
Solved the first four using c:COM:VFC, but this takes too much time. I think that someone should create a bot which updates all links on all pages on Commons (file information pages, noticeboards and other pages). --Stefan2 (talk) 20:32, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
w:en:User:BesigedB and c:User:BesigedB also belong to the same user according to the links. --Jarekt (talk) 19:09, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Is there not a place on Commons where y'all can ask a bot owner to fix this? I do not think the solution is technically complex at all, but it's outside of my remit. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:25, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
We can fix the user template issues there. I was just assuming that that issue might be more widespread and there might be some plans to run one code to fix the same issues on all the wikis the same way. I am also weary of "fixing" issues what might need to be reverted. Like the accounts of w:en:User:BesigedB/c:User:BesigedB, en:User:Alx_91/c:User:Alx 91, en:User:JCarriker/c:User:JCarriker where commons account was renamed but enwiki account was not. I can point it out at mw:Steward requests/Username changes but in my experience it is pointless to revert bot edits without making sure the bot will not redo them soon after. --Jarekt (talk) 20:22, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Confused about User Name; can I (re)claim it? Cannot currently access it.[edit]

I don't know if this is the place to post this, but when I try to create an account, I'm receive this message:

Account creation error Cannot create account: The requested username is already taken by a user on another wiki.

Thinking that I may have created the account elsewhere myself and forgotten, I request my password, but without success. I eventually get to this link in my search that says the user account is not registered and has been renamed:

I go to the renamed page and find this:

And, by following your suggested link to the Central Authority, this is what I find:

Is this user name in use in actuality? Has it been renamed? And, if it has, how can I claim the username (It's my real first name)?

An other Commons problem: Broken attribution for files transferred from Wikipedias and other WMF projects[edit]

there's an other problem on Commons after SUL finalization affecting many thousands images. i pinged Erik about it in March but got no reaction ([5] in German).

This problem is about renamed accounts on other wikis than Commons, and about files made by these accounts which were transferred to Commons in the past. So this problem is a bit different from the two Commons issues described above (the first is about the same kind of attribution links but about renamed Commons users, the second is about broken license templates of renamed Commons users).

description of the problem:

  • self-taken files which were transferred from eg. enwiki to Commons, have a different user or bot account in the upload log entry, because it is usually not the original uploader (=author) who transfers these files. For proper attribution the original author and his userpage (remember: not located on Commons for transferred files) is therefore linked in the information template and/or within the text in the "original upload log" section, and/or in license templates. For example see c:File:Sagwasser01.jpg, an image which i transferred today. Everything is ok there, the photographer Antiope05411 is named and linked at several places.
  • but SUL finalization renamed thousands accounts on other wikis, and in many cases these accounts uploaded files which were already transferred to Commons. Now author links on Commons in the form of [[:en:User:Name|Name]] or [[:wikibooks:pl:User:Name|Name]] point to actually different users or to accounts without any edits/uploads on the linked wiki, so i again call it "broken attribution".
  • the problem is very complex because there are so many wikis, so many renamed accounts and so many transferred files (i think over a million from Wikipedias alone, but don't know how many transferred files by now renamed accounts). Easy tools to compare links/redirects etc (like Special:WhatLinksHere) don't work in this crosswiki situation.

Please notice that i only see the problem, but i am not able to offer help because my technical understanding is too low.

  • what is the best procedure to fix this special issue? can or will you (or someone else from the WMF team) please take care for fixing? (maybe by initiating a coordination process like File metadata cleanup drive or by developing special tools, i don't know, but i think this large problem cannot be ignored, and the small active Commons community is likely overburdened without any WMF help).

single-user login finalisation failure[edit]

I used to have one account for all my wikipedia and wikimedia activities. As a result of your single-user login finalisation, I now have 20 ore more different accounts. As far as I am concerned, the single-user login project is a mess and a failure. The only thing I can do now is close and delete all my accounts and start anew.

Renaming account (wikimarvin)[edit]

I also would like to know why my account was chosen for renaming opposed to the account with the duplicate name.

I'm assuming you're now User:Wikimarvin~itwiki. Your account name clashed with Wikimarvin on the German-language Wikipedia. That account has more edits than your account and it's significantly older as well, so it is the global account holder and your account had to be renamed so that the other account can use the name on all wikis. You can find the rationale here. My apologies that you've had to go through this process, it's been a long time coming and the time is now. You're welcome to pick out a name of your own choice, though, even a similar one to what you had. Just log in here on Meta using your Wikimarvin~itwiki username and your old password, then go to Special:GlobalRenameRequest to fill out a short form to be renamed. Unify Request (Another one ...)[edit]

Cordialement FK

(EN) You have rename my account name efka to efka~frwiki. The other account EFKA (, year 2011), existing on another country as frwiki, is created later as mine (, year 2008) and therefore it is rather for him to change his name instead of mine ... I would therefore regain my normal account that matches my image, beyond Wikipedia (other platforms : teaching, technicals informations, forums, ...).

Other request : The account efkafr is mine too, maybe you can merge the twice under the name efka (has priority !). Sincerly, FK (talk) 18:20, 23 Mars 2015

Hi there. I do not know what account you are talking about, but the answer is that accounts cannot be deleted. You are free to abandon your account, or fill out Special:GlobalRenameRequest and ask to be renamed to something random. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:21, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
