  • User: Ndahiro derrick (User account list / User page link)
  • Primary Wikimedia projects: kinyarwanda wikipedia
  • Language capabilities (language and level of proficiency): English: B1 level (Intermediate); Kinyarwanda: Native speaker (Proficiency)
  • Regional experiences: Sub-Saharan Africa
  • What experience do you have participating on committees, within or outside the Wikimedia movement?
Rwanda, as the president of the Wikimedia Community User Group Rwanda in January 2022. I successfully secured funding for a community support grant (formerly known as an Annual Support Grant) and have been leading its implementation. I led the planning and execution of various projects in Rwanda, such as Wikivibrance, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Folklore, WikiforHumanrights, WikiGap, and the WPWP campaign. This included responsibilities like training newcomers and facilitating sessions.
On a regional level, in July, I organized a two-day NAMIBIA 2022 Wikimedia Projects Awareness and edit-a-thon, which introduced new members to the Wikimedia movement, Wikipedia, and Wiki Commons. Additionally, I served as the Research Team coordinator for the Movement Strategy Implementation Grant for the Africa Great Lakes region, conducting a Detailed Needs assessment in the Eastern DRC, Burundi, and Rwanda, focusing on Kinyarwanda and Kiswahili languages, with French and English as international languages. In the same year, I played a pivotal role in the Wiki Indaba 2022 conference as the Planning and Organizing lead.
I've also been actively involved in the grants review process, serving as a committee member for The Middle East and Africa region. Recently, I participated as a panellist in the Queering Wikipedia 2023 conference, where I engaged in a discussion on equity and safety for Wikimedia events. During this panel, I provided insights into the LGBTQ+ status in the Great Lakes Region.
These engagements have equipped me with communication, Critical analysis and Problem-solving skills and Sociocracy and appreciation of diversity.
  • What skills, experience, or perspective would you bring or contribute to the committee, if appointed?
Since 2019, my active role in establishing a Wikimedia community in Rwanda, volunteering and engaging with Wikimedians from different regions has equipped me with community organising, cross-cultural communication, and providing governance advice for emerging organisations which I find essential for the committee.
  • Is there any other pertinent information that you would like us to take into account when reviewing your application?
I have been an active member since 2019, in different capacities including president of a formal affiliate, Grants review committee member, International organizing committee member and Conference lead and volunteer in different It has helped to acquire insights and skills such as communication, Critical analysis and Problem-solving skills and Sociocracy
  • Which sub-committee are you interested in working with (Conflict Intervention, Recognitions)? Either
  • What do you think are the benefits and responsibilities of functioning as formal affiliates, and when is a group of Wikimedians ready to form an affiliate?
Being recognized as a formal affiliate greatly facilitates the operations and collaborations of User groups with Wikimedia communities and like-minded organizations, unlike those that lack this recognition. Being a formal affiliate also opens doors to additional benefits, including financial support and the chance to have a say in Wikimedia-related conferences. However, it also entails obligations related to financial accountability, reporting, and the establishment of governance structures.
In my opinion, a group of Wikimedians should be in operation for a minimum of one year before considering the formation of an affiliate
  • Please describe your experience working with conflict resolution, and how you have helped build consensus and support diversity.
Through my diverse range of roles during my undergraduate studies from March 2017 to 2020, I gained extensive experience in conflict resolution and fostering inclusivity. As President of the Makerere School of Women and Gender Studies at Makerere University, I navigated various perspectives of both my cabinet members and the entire student community and ensured that conflicts were addressed constructively. In my role as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for We Are Youths( A community organization), I actively facilitated discussions and implemented strategies to resolve any conflicts that arose within the team.
During my internship at the Gender Development Department of Rwanda's Ministry of Gender and Family Planning, I had the opportunity to observe and contribute to conflict resolution efforts in a professional setting. As Culture Minister for Makerere University Banyarwanda Students Association, I actively promoted cultural understanding and unity among members, mitigating potential conflicts related to cultural differences.
Serving as vice president and deputy secretary for Makerere University East African Students Association, I played a key role in mediating any disputes that emerged within the association, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and consensus-building. As a Peer Trainer at the Gender Mainstreaming Directorate, I worked directly with peers to facilitate discussions on gender-related issues, encouraging diverse perspectives and fostering an inclusive environment.
Since 2019, while actively participating in the Wikimedia movement, I have faced challenging situations involving seasoned Wikimedians. However, with the support of considerate mentors and a range of training programs, including those focused on sociocracy, I have acquired the skills to effectively navigate and resolve conflicts.
Overall, my experiences in these various roles have equipped me with the skills and insights needed to effectively handle conflicts, build consensus, and promote diversity and inclusivity in any professional setting.
