From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

After Indic Wikisource Community Consultation 2018 in Kolkata in 2018, the CIS-A2K conducted the Wikisource workshops in different languages. Among them were Punjabi Wikisource Workshop, Patiala, Gujarati Wikisource Workshop, Ahmedabad Marathi Wikisource Workshop, Pavel, Tamil Wikisource Workshop, Salem and Assamese Wikisource Workshop, Guwahati Wikisource community. CIS-A2K conducted all these Wikisource workshops in 2019.

Today, after 3 years of the Covid Pandemic, we want to go back again to those Wikisource language communities, Where the language community stands today after we planned and worked three years ago for those communities. We will plan to revisit to same communities to discuss, develop, and strengthen to the next level.

CIS-A2K will conduct an advanced level Wikisource workshop, continuous sustainable road maps, future plan, and GLAM development towards Wikisource project in respective languages.

Report

[edit]

CIS-A2K started the initiative to involve Indic communities in on-ground activities. A2K started from the same point where everything got stuck. For the last couple of years, the on-ground activities were shut down due to unfortunate COVID19 pandemic situations around March 2020. Now, everything is going to be settled down just like in prior times. After a long time, the Punjabi Wikisource Community skill-building workshop was planned for the Punjabi community. The Punjabi community wanted to pursue their further work on the advanced level. After completing the need assessment, the event was designed according to the responses. The community is committed to getting more engaged and involved in Wikisource activities. They made promises that the activity would not be a one-time activity only.

In the first step of the event, we collected some responses from the community. On 5th May, the community finished the form filling process. The event was announced to the community a week before. The sessions for the event were designed to follow the forms which were filled by the community members. All the experienced participants fill the form and registered themselves for the workshop. The event was conducted for two days on 14 and 15 May 2022. There was a pre-event meeting on 13 May 2022. It was an introductory meeting where all the participants interacted with each other. A total of 11 participants from the Punjabi community participated in this workshop. Two members were from CIS-A2K,

The event started on 14 May and began at 9:30 am. The sessions were designed properly. The introduction of the event introduction message was presented by User:Nitesh (CIS-A2K). Punjabi Wikisource: scope, focus area and future by User: Satdeep Gill and during the same session volunteers discussed their problems faced during proofreading. After this session, User:Jayanta (CIS-A2K) started the sessions with Punjabi Wikisource status. During the event, he taught volunteers about Index page and Pagelist creation Advance Wikisource techniques, Editing sessions, advanced proofreading techniques [including hyphenated words and Template nop] Advance Wikisource tools, gadgets, Partnership, content (books) relicense, scope and objective: brainstorming-Group Discussion and troubleshooting and sharing knowledge with each other.

On the second day of the event, Jayanta Nath conversed about Punjabi Wikisource's future road map. Furthermore, transclusion Session, Editing Session for transclusion, Categorization & tools and gadgets and Brainstorming and roadmap-group Discussion. During the event, all the participants did a great job. They contributed enthusiastically and followed all the instructions and guidelines which were given by Jayanta (CIS-A2K). User:Benipal hardarshan and User:Satpal Dandiwal handled the technical part of the Punjabi Wikisource. In the Punjabi community, female participation was good enough. User:Gill jassu, User:Rajdeep ghuman, User:Dugal harpreet, User:Jagvir Kaur, User:Tamanpreet Kaur and User:Nitesh Gill, who is working with CIS-A2K. User:Jagseer S Sidhu discussed the issues which he faced during the Punjabi Audiobook project and User:Mulkh Singh also took part actively in the workshop and share the ideas about partnerships and collaborations.

Apart from Punjabi Wikisource, Jayanta (CIS-A2K) and Satdeep Gill taught Punjabi Wikimedians how to create Wikidata items. The item creation was related to Punjabi Wikisource and a few items were created by the participants. The events statistics can be seen on the outreach dashboard here.

What is the community doing after the event? After attending the workshop, the community gets started on Wikisource and Wikidata under #1Lib1Ref. This is the follow-up activity submitted by the Punjabi community and their campaign outreach dashboard is here.
