Discussion

[edit]
  • @DerHexer: - just letting you know that the visual elements are all loaded now. Please let me know if there is enough to proceed with the banners, if you have any questions, or if there needs to be any adjustments to suit the central notice process ... thanks!! Central Notice admin comments

[edit]
  • @Islahaddow and Anthere: Not an easy request. I've created a banner which looks pretty similar to your proposal and should also work on mobile (English desktop, French mobile preview). However, I had to crop the file but I didn't mirror it yet (I'm not sure if that would look natural). Please do so if you think that it would be better. Furthermore, I've added a [Help with translation] part so that the texts can be translated into more languages than English and French which you've also requested.
Usally, we only create campaigns in languages where the landing page is translated. However, your landing page is translatable right now (so is the banner now). Nonetheless, banner campaigns which do not only target logged-in users but readers should be promoted for feedback on the affected wikis. With English and French in mind, enwiki and frwiki should be informed at minimum. As you want to reach out to sister projects, usually you should also let them know before.
Since you've requested two campaigns with different settings, it might make most sense to limit the non-Africa campaign to logged-in users which would avoid the notifications to the larger projects because of banners for readers. The Africa focused campaign could be more easily activated for readers, too. Please tell me what you think about it before I start to create the campaigns. Hello DerHexer. Looks great to me. I’ll share with the other members of the team so that we get more testing on different environment. The translate link will be very practical. Thanks for that.
I already announced the project on the French Wikipedia quite generously (pump, wikiproject pages etc.), but I will also add a note about the banner for safety.
If I understand you properly, you suggest that the banner could run for logged-in and anons on African countries. And that the banner would only run for logged-in in non African countries. If so, that looks great to me. One benefit of the campaign is to recruit African editors (so all editors looks good) and the other benefit is to get African Union content used on Wikipedia articles (and for this... only logged-in editors is best...). If I understood you well, we should go this way ! thanks Anthere (talk) 09:20, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello DerHexer - this looks great!! you have done a really awesome job - only problem is that the banner is linking to the wrong space. It needs to go to Africa Environment not to African Knowledge Initiative. Thanks so much Islahaddow (talk) 12:18, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, fixed right now. Thanks for the open eye! —DerHexer (Talk) 12:21, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Anthere and Islahaddow: What a ride! We cannot select continents but have to check or uncheck all countries individually. We now have the campaign for Africa and its banner for logged-in and anonymous users, as well as the campaign for non-African countries and its banner for logged-in users only (don't get confused by the wrong title). As they both have the same display and you've approved the preview, I've enabled both campaigns. Please ping me if you can find any mistakes! Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:59, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats ! I had no idea we could now geo target at a lower level than the country... I wanted to ask you if the current geotag of Morocco included or did not included Western Sahara ? If it does not include Western Sahara, then we need to add it to the list of African countries to make sure it is not left behind. The « wrong » title could get confusing lol ! Otherwise, looks great to me. Let’s cross fingers. Thanks ! Anthere (talk) 17:43, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I couldn't find Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in the list, having had en:List of African countries by population open for the country check. I've just read now that it might be listed here as Western Sahara which it actually is. Already fixed. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:00, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well yeah... it is a tiny bit more politically neutral to name that area Western Sahara... Anthere (talk)

Ahum. Now the next step is the WLA one :) Good news... same countries... (I hope you can duplicate stuff ? Or does that need to be rechecked entirely from scratch ? ) CentralNotice/Request/Wiki Loves Africa 2023 Anthere (talk) 17:46, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On it, no option to copy campaign (that made me cry way too often in the past). —DerHexer (Talk) 18:00, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that :( Anthere (talk) 18:59, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I was bold and made images and text smaller with the intention to make the banner less angry. -- Ата (talk) 17:07, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
