Notifications and the Ukrainian Wikipedia[edit]

Greetings Ата,

Notifications, also known as Echo, is tentatively scheduled to be deployed to the Ukrainian Wikipedia on 17 September. I was wondering if you would be interested in helping to translate and plan for the release there? This mainly involves translating and localizing the FAQ so the help icon refers users to a local document and pre-announcing the release. Let me know what you think! Thank you for the translation. The help page is the most important for translating. I can understand your concern about it appearing facebooky, I had the same thought when it appeared on the English Wikipedia. I've actually grown to like notifications. I am a very quiet editor, I do not follow many pages, so it is actually very convenient to be notified when a conversation that I am involved in is updated or if there is something else that someone thought would interest me. The added email options are pretty convenient too. You might even end up liking it :). If not, Notifications has the benefit of being able to turn almost all of the features off. where <password> is a password of your choice and <email> is your e-mail address? After you do that, please follow the instructions that are e-mailed to you to confirm your e-mail address. When you're done with that, I just need you to confirm your cloak request:

Grammar[edit]

Привіт! Я побачив твої виправлення граматики, але переважна більшість із них полягають у заміні британської англійської (де правильно писати programme, organisation, favourable, 15 December) на американську (де пишуть program, organization, favorable, December, 15 тощо). Я не маю нічого проти в переведенні всього звіту на американську англійську, якщо це так важливо, але, будь ласка, переводь уже весь звіт зразу (зараз там суміш organised та organized тощо). Та я власне і хотіла зробити якось однаково (половина дат була так, половина інак), а американська англійська Фонду мала б бути ближча – ну, якісь такі були міркування. Я зараз доредагую до кінця. Я просто приводив весь річний звіт до британської англійської, потім весь матеріал з річного звіту за 2012 рік було перенесено в грантовий, а от 2013 вже писали вручну з американським форматом дат, звідти й суміш. Translation markup changes on Data retention guidelines[edit]

Hey Ата,

I wanted to let you know I undid this edit and explain why/make sure we fixed any issues. It appeared from the edit summary your main goal was to change ==<translate>Headers<translate>== to <translate>==Headers==<translate> . I'm not completely sure I understand why that would be better ( it seems better for the translators to have to deal with as little of the wikitext as possible, just having to translate the words themselves) but I'm certainly open for argument on it and probably would have left it. The reason I undid was because I realized a bunch of the translate tags were removed from elsewhere too and we were left with a couple very large translation blocks. Again, obviously happy to talk about if what you were doing was better for the translators since that's obviously the goal :). Jalexander--WMF 06:31, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The point is that it is better for translators to know that they are dealing with the header. This is strongly recommended in docs on mediawiki-wiki. There are also many other useful trifles in docs of Translate extension and few English-speakers has ever read them, lol ('cause those who translate them had to read for sure). -- Ата (talk) 19:26, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair when I first started using the extension those docs did not exist ;) I had to learn most of it from scratch or occasionally talking to Nike/Siebrand. I didn't see any reason to go back when I didn't run into any other issues :) On quick glance I don't agree with all of it... but I don't need to :) If the header thing helps more then having to avoid the wiki text that that's fine, I'm happy to adjust that. To be totally honest I tend to over markup simply because I've had the extension not do what I expected (even with the docs) so often that I like to be 'very clear' what I want it to do ;) Jalexander--WMF 20:48, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I already did, thanks :). I never have any issues with someone correcting me or calling me out if they think I'm wrong, I may not always agree but that's always the case and just because I disagree doesn't mean I'm right. Please don't feel like you can't correct something if you think it needs to be either directly or by reaching out. That's what the Bold Revert Discuss cycle is for. I'll definitely take a look through the documentation and see if I can add anything (especially with some examples or screen shots). I was mostly just surprised because I've never had anyone call me out for the way I did the headers before ;). I fully know that my attitude towards a lot of work is 'make it work' and so sometimes I end up with odd norms ;) which is why it's always good to hear from the people who are using it 'the right way' or even just came up with different odd norms :). Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposal[edit]

Hi Ата,

I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.

As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. Please test the new feature Special:PageMigration[edit]

As a Google Summer of Code Intern, I have been working on the Mass Migration tools project for Wikimedia. We are now ready with a minimal working product. The tool helps translators and translation administrators import the old translations into the Translate Extension.

An instance of the same has been set up on labs. You can find some useful instructions on the main page.

Please test the tool and report bugs/suggestions using the link provided on the main page itself. You can have a look at the tracking bug to check already reported bugs.

Please consider not translating Tech News in protest[edit]

Hi Ата, I have just noticed that you've been working on the translation of Tech News this weekend.

I wanted to ask you to consider refraining from translating such pages to avoid supporting the recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation. On Sunday, they have implemented a change that gives them an unprecedented, unilateral and unlimited power to protect certain pages on Wikimedia wikis in a manner that makes it impossible for all volunteers — including locally elected administrators — to edit them.

The change was secretly forced through without any community consultation, and the Foundation have used this new feature to actively fight the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.

Your volunteer translations directly sustain such actions of the Foundation. Your work helps them save time and effort that they would otherwise have to invest in recruiting, training and managing new employees, and saves them money they would otherwise have to spend on professional translations.

The recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation make it very clear that they no longer respect the wishes of the volunteer community, and that they no longer consider us an equal partner. The least we can do to voice our dismay at those actions, and to support our colleagues on the German Wikipedia, is to stop investing our precious time as volunteers on directly helping the Wikimedia Foundation. We can instead translate pages which help all wiki users.

Please take a minute to consider withdrawing your help for the Foundation in protest against their disrespectful treatment of the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.

Група повідомлень не зникає[edit]

Привіт! Йдеться про групу повідомлень під назвою "Wikimedia Russia" у Special:LanguageStats. Я переклав все, що там було. Була також одна сторінка, перекладена з російської на англійську, переклад якої на інші мови був заборонений. Я зв'язався з її автором, і він вилучив її зі списку перекладів. Але група повідомлень все ще там. Я переклав деякі сторінки на дотичні теми, але не допомогло. В розширенні показано, що в цій групі є дві підгрупи - обидві перекладені, обидві я кількаразово пробував оновити через нульові редагування - не допомогло. На Special:LanguageStats постійно показано 7 неперекладених повідомлень - йдеться, найімовірніше, про WMF Resolutions/Approval of Wikimedia Russia - саме тут є 7 повідомлень, але вони перекладені. Не знаю, в чому причина, може я ще щось пропустив, а може є якесь запізнення, з яким я раніше не стикався. А може є ще якийсь нюанс, який можна побачити з інтерфейсу адміністратора перекладу. Можеш глянути?

Додам ще, що я раніше "прибрав" з неперекладених групу повідомлень "Tech", використовуючи нульові редагування на кожній сторінці з цієї групи - після цього вона зникла (тобто перейшла до "повністю перекладених") моментально. You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.

In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store.[1] Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.[2]

If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

  • Did you create a local project page for the contest in your wiki? Please, be sure to link it with Q22342981.
    • Yes, the page exists, and it will be linked.
  • Please briefly describe your local rules on Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Local rules.
    • Sure, will be done. Our rules are almost finished; we only need to get some info from Wikimedia Slovakia before we can go. The rules were reviewed by our legal office.
  • There is a proposed timeline of thematic weeks about countries: use it! See Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Timeline.
    • No, we will have our own approach to the contest. It will have 3 special rounds, first two will take place from 21st March to 31st May, the third one from 1st May to 30th June.
  • Did you create a template {{CEE Spring 2016}} and make sure that participants will put it on the articles talk pages?
    • Ugh no, what we will use is the education extension. This worked superb last year. Now the question is if you need it on the international level.
    Please have it similar to this example: uk:Template:CEE Spring 2016 for the purpose of gathering statistics.
    Its code is somewhat generic. It might be that your wiki already has templates which cover its parts, or you would not need some parts like gender selection in case your language does not have genders. Some parts, like category names, are worded a weird way on purpose just to show that in languages which have grammar cases you can avoid conjugation (which will require something like #switch parser function) and just use the nominative case.
  • {{CEE Spring 2016}} template requires to create some ~30 hidden categories. Is your wiki ok with that?
  • As the contest is held simultaneously in many Wikipedias, it is vital that all articles, contest templates and categories are linked with Wikidata. Don't forget about this :)
    • The existing ones are done. I made two tables for the Meta Structure page, but the rest has to be done this weekend.
  • One last question: What time zone do you use for defining contest beginning and ending? Please write here.

  • Right now not, I only have couple of things I need to arrange still (ie. obtain the prizes, prepare press release, FB events and finish the posters and graphics). Base, Well, I have not overseen your question. But I understand we are a bit tense recently due to the deadline that was very clear. I mean no, there is no information like that in the extension. Is it important to have it? I would like to help, but on the other hand I do not want to harass our users and contestants with more requirements and obstacles. Aktron, well the problem is that this kind of data is very difficult (and for a bot impossible) to get afterwards (especially if people write about something not from pre-prepared lists). We have global metric which is about homogeneousness of countries coverage, and it would also be nice to have statistics on how were different topics covered. Even if it's not needed for local competition and is not included into global metrics defined in the grant it is still very interesting and I dare say useful to know. I hope that the Education Extension has some API (haven't checked yet) so that at least basic article listing could be done from it so that I will add it to general list I prepare, but there's definitely no way I can get the country and topic data unless they are somehow manually provided (in case of templates it's done with template parameters specific for this). I am not experienced with the extension, but I really hope that you can think on some way participants can point that kind of stuff in the courses. Yep, the article listing will be done and we will have data about who contributed, how many bytes and which articles. Given the fact that last year we had 388 articles from the contest (712 kB), it is reasonable to assume that the specific countries can be added later on possibly by me (manually) so you can evaluate the data. --Aktron (talk) 22:59, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

CEESpring Survey[edit]

Hi Ата,

There were/are some issues with CEE Spring Survey for Albanian Community, title was broken (which I fixed in all talk pages), second the survey offer an option for Albanian ("shqip"), but when you enter there is nothing, a message say "Thank you for completing the survey". Who had to translate into Albanian, and was informed any of a local organizers to do it? (we were asket to translate only message.

Update regarding Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos[edit]

Hello,

I regret to inform you that the series of motivational and educational videos project, which had been planned introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors, is being discontinued.

There are multiple factors that have led to this decision. The initial budget and time estimates were far too small for a project of this scale and complexity. Also, my simultaneous involvement in Cascadia Wikimedians User Group was problematic due to the shortage of human resources for the user group, which resulted in my spending far more time trying to help the user group than I had planned, so my time and attention were diverted from this video project to assisting the user group.

I regret that this project did not fulfill the hopes that many of us had for it, and I hope that in the future someone with the necessary resources will choose to resume work on it or a similar project. Timeline[edit]

The event lasts a month for the participants. As of the beginning of the event, please:

  • Invite previous participants to join. We have a template you may want to use.
  • Setup your WAM page in your local wikiproject if you haven’t done that.
  • Link your WAM page at Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. It’s important for others to understand and connect to your community! Remove the X when you done that. WAM is organized at national level. So I have to ask you to put your country in front of your name if you haven’t done that.
  • Publish a notification about WAM in site notice as well as village pump. Go public!
  • Connect with us. Generally send me an email so that we can reach you for future information!
  • Become the jury member in a campaign on Fountain which is an amazing tool for you to supervise participants’ articles. If you don’t have the campaign set up, please contact us! And put a link to your community’s campaign page for participants’ navigation.
  • Organize a off-site editathon event. A coffee bar, internet and laptops. Though it’s optional. If you want to do that, please contact me.

In the following days, you should answer the questions from your community and supervise the submissions. Hope you have fun!

Community Wishlist Survey 2020 needs translations[edit]

Hello!

I'm contacting you because you've already translated some messages for the Community Wishlist Survey. We need more translations for the 2020 edition, to create a survey that would serve as many users as we know.

The list below shows our needs by order of importance (most important first):

  1. The invitation sent to communities. It summarizes the process. We plan to distribute it soon on this year target wikis. The more translations we have, the better!
  2. The form for non-English speakers. Anyone should be able to add their wish, no matter which language they speak. Translating this short form is very important to encourage diversity and equity.
  3. The survey itself, where the entire process is described.
  4. The preload form, that provides more context on existing wishes.

Some languages are already covered (maybe by you), but some messages have been updated, and there is always some room for reviewing and polishing messages.

Clovermoss, one millionth article is about Odetta and it was created by a school teacher as a part of WikiGap Challenge. Personally I think that this is a symbol of ukwiki being engaged it global trends of article creation: both good ones (writing about women, writing about activists, writing about topic dear to readers, involving teachers into Wikipedia Education Program) and not so good ones (writing often about western culture more than others etc.). We didn't celebrate yet; there are plans for offline gathering after the quarantine. The milestone is a relief for many, since we perceived 1 mln articles as, I would say, an equivalent to age of majority. But then again, there is a general feeling of not being particularly proud about the quality of all these articles. Since next million milestone is far away, we'll probably be more interested in quality for now; these are my personal reflections. Newsletters for Wikimedia tutorials[edit]

Hi Ата,

You may remember that awhile ago I started to develop scripts for video tutorials that would teach people how to edit Wikipedia and the sister projects. Although the scripts are primarily intended for English Wikipedia, I think that much of the content will be adaptable for use on other language editions of Wikipedia and for Commons, and eventually I would like to extend the project to topics for Commons.

Hi CJackel! I've split the translation unit, separating the section title from the consequent paragraph. I immediately then added translation into the newly created unit (which you can see here). Apparently I acted too quick: Translate extension is somewhat famous for having lags and needing dumb edits here and there for translations to be properly assembled from the Translation: namespace parts and be visible in place. @Felipe da Fonseca, hi. Page Wikimedia Foundation elections/2021/Candidates/Dariusz Jemielniak belongs to the pages that can be translated. Translatable pages can be grouped into aggregate groups for translation; these groups can be seen on Special:LanguageStats in bold and can be selected on top of Special:Translate. I added the pages that are related to this year elections to the aggregate group "Wikimedia Foundation elections 2021" so that they could be translated one after another, without the need to open another page, here: [3] This action belongs to those that get logged in Special:Log/pagetranslation, this is why you saw it in recent changes/watchlist. Campaigns Product Update #2[edit]

Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers! We are excited to share our updates:

  • Request for Feedback: We have shared our project principles, wireframes for the desktop version, and open questions for you about the team’s event registration project. See the latest status updates here.
Wireframes are design tools that imagine the future interface of the software. We haven’t built anything yet. We need your feedback on these designs so that we can make better product decisions. You can give feedback on the talk page regarding the design and features of the wireframes. We would love to hear your comments to help us establish the next necessary steps for the project.
Please share with us your feedback!
  • Presentations: The Campaign Product team participated in WikiArabia 2021 and WikiConference North America 2021 to give a brief introduction on how the team works. Senior Program Strategist Alex Stinson gave an overview about campaigns and how we can scale the organizing experience within the Movement. Senior Product Manager Ilana Fried gave an introduction about the Product Team and the project wireframes of the first campaign software solution: the on-wiki registration tool.   • Team update: We have hired our first team engineer, JCarvalho and our campaign organizing fellow, IBrazal. Newsletter updates will be done by IBrazal and she will be coordinating with you! We hope to have the rest of the engineering team onboard soon! For those of who missed the last Campaign Office Hour, you may watch the recording to know more about the Campaign Product Team.

What is next?

Testers Needed! We will be partnering with YUX, a design research agency, to learn how our team can improve the experience of Wikimedia campaign organizers and participants in Africa. For this reason, we are looking for community members who are willing to be part of the rapid testing sessions. Preferably, we want organizers and editors who have worked in an African context. If you would like to participate in testing, please email ibrazal-ctr@wikimedia.org.
Upcoming Conferences. Wiki Indaba 2021. This year, the conference will be held virtually on November 5-7, 2021 with the theme "Rethink + Reset : Visions of the future". Read more about the conference here or register to join the event. We will be presenting the registration features on Sunday November 7.
We will also be attending Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021, which will be held virtually again this year on November 5-7, 2021. We will be presenting the registration tool on November 6 as part of our communication and sharing process.

Anchor within translate tag[edit]

Thanks for Special:Diff/22547793! I was careful to make sure this didn't introduce a new i18n message. I'm guessing it still did show up? I ask because following your edit, I see the the page doesn't have any changes that need to be marked for translation, as if no changes were made at all to the messages. MusikAnimal, you added an anchor within the translate tags, so after you marked the revision for translation it did show up as a new unit. I have recently finished translating the page so I noticed when a new unit popped up, edited source page, and marked my version for translation. (Interestingly, history doesn't show it, but my marking it is logged and you can see that FuzzyBot made its changes, too.) Campaigns Product Update #3[edit]

Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!

We are excited to share our updates:

  • Proposal to create new namespaces: We have proposed to create two namespaces, which are “Event” and “Event talk.” This way, we can easily create an Event Center that pulls data from event pages. This Event Center may include tools to create event pages with registration support, a calendar of events, and event statistics, among other features. More importantly, the Event Center will highlight organizing as an essential part of the Wikimedia movement. Please give us feedback on Phabricator or Meta about our proposal to create two new namespaces.
  • Engineering updates: We are excited that we have finished hiring for our engineering team! Three engineers and an engineering manager have joined our team since our last update. In the last few months, they have conducted technical planning and launched the building phase of the project. They are now building the registration tool. You can see the updated team on meta.
  • Design updates: We conducted usability tests with a small group of testers for early feedback on the desktop wireframes. After collecting this feedback, we have developed a new version for desktop wireframes, which will be ready to share in the next few weeks. These desktop wireframes display the user flow of two experiences: one for organizers who want to add registration to their event pages, and another for participants who want to register for an event. Additionally, the design team is also currently working on the first version of mobile wireframes, which will be shared during the next office hour.
1. View the latest desktop wireframes in Figma for Campaign Organizer Prototype and Participant Registration Prototype.
2. Leave us some feedback on the desktop wireframes. Note that we haven’t posted the newest version of the desktop wireframes on the project page yet, but we will soon (and you can feel free to add feedback on any version you have seen).
  • Ambassador updates: Three product ambassadors for the Arabic, French and Swahili communities have now joined our team! They will help us collect feedback from Wikimedia communities about the project and understand the needs of organizers, through gathering first-hand information. These ambassadors are immersed as actual members of these communities, so they will also help us identify the needs of the organizers in our pilot communities. The ambassadors are: M. Bachounda for Arabic communities, Georges Fodouop for French communities, and Antoni Mtavangu for Swahili communities.

What is next?

Next Office Hour: We will be holding an office hour on March 31, 2022 at 15:00 UTC, which will be conducted via Zoom. We invite everyone to attend, and we really hope to see you! The focus will be on the Registration Tool. The team will also be providing community updates on the usability test findings and design highlights for the wireframes. We will also share our current Project timeline and answer any questions you may have. Join us and share your thoughts on these developments!
In a few months, we are expecting to have the early testable version of the tool. By then, the team will be doing the first round of general testing and gathering feedback. We are looking forward to adding more features on the tool such as communication support, potentially by the end of this year. If you know other organizers that might be interested in following these developments, please recommend that they subscribe to the newsletter. We want to receive as much feedback as we can.

Event Registration Tool: Demo and Invitation to Test[edit]

Hello Subscribers!


The Campaigns Product Team from the Wikimedia Foundation will be hosting two office hours to demo the new Event Registration Tool, and train organizers how to use it. In these office hours, you will learn how to:

  • Create an event page in the new event namespace (as an event organizer)
  • Enable registration on your event page (as an event organizer)
  • Collect data on who registered for your event (as an event organizer)
  • Register for an event on the event page (as an event participant)


You can attend one office hour or both, depending on your availability on the following dates:

  • Session 1: Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 5:00 PM UTC
  • Session 2: Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 12:00 PM UTC


These events will be multilingual, with live interpretations in Arabic, English, French, Italian, and Portuguese, and Swahili. Note that Portuguese will be available on the 21st, but not the 23rd. We strongly encourage you to join and share your feedback on the tool. Your feedback will help us improve the tool so that Wikimedians can have a better event experience. Campaigns Product Update #4[edit]

Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!

We are excited to share our updates:

  • Event Registration v0
We have successfully launched Event Registration tool V0 on beta cluster and collected feedback from the first batch of testers. This tool is part of a more comprehensive organizing solution, the Event Center, which hopes to support movement organizers. Through this registration solution, organizers can collect useful data on campaign participants and their needs while respecting participant privacy.
Testing update. In our first round of feedback collection, testers were composed of different types of organizers around the movement with a language focus on Arabic, French, English, and Swahili communities. Most of the testers successfully created their test event registrations and signed up for a test event registration created by other organizers. Simple, easy to use, and aids in managing event participants were the common feedback we received from first-time users. In contrast, access and proper localization of the tool were the points for improvement identified. We are working on V1, which will include communication support and integration with the Programs and Event Dashboard. This will be released on Meta-Wiki soon. We hope to address accessibility during this launch and improve localization problems once the tool has been deployed in local wikiprojects.
The tool is still available for testing on the beta cluster. Feel free to leave feedback on our project talk page or this form.
  • Organizer Lab
    Looking for a way to learn how to effectively organize around sustainability? Join the beta version of the Organizer Lab on WikiLearn to understand how to effectively organize a global campaign around sustainability and climate change! Applications are open from September 22 - October 19, 2022. The Organizer Lab will be a 9-week online learning experience from the end of October until mid December that prepares participants to obtain knowledge about the topics that they wish to create, a call to action for strategic knowledge gaps, as well as more generalized Wikimedia organizing and campaign/event design skills.

  • Organizer User Rights. We are reaching out to a pool of administrators from Arabic, French and Swahili communities to collect feedback on what is the best way to define organizer user rights, what privileges to give to community organizers, and what are the limitations of these privileges.
