About WP:BIGDELETE intervention on eswiki.

[edit]

Greetings. I'm the owner of the sandboxes that were requested to hace their history merged. It was a large list of 31 articles to be merged, therefore, I had to make an special request at the board on eswiki on two parts.
Thank you very much for merging some of these this morning, but I've noticed that there are still some remaining and are the ones from part 2 of the original request. I don't know if you overlooked them because they were not on the first part or because you had some trouble doing the merger. If it was because you couldn't understand the request post, the remaining ones are in a separate list below the line that reads Artículos involucrados (parte 2). The article with the definitive name is the same as the first part. Thanks.--MexTDT (talk) 23:15, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

MexTDT, hi, you are welcome. I just postponed them to do in a second batch because I had to go AFK. I will finish merging in an hour or so :) --Base (talk) 23:40, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I understand, take your time. Thank you very much.--MexTDT (talk) 23:43, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sysop in vi.wiktionary

[edit]

Regarding this. I've contacted the vi.wiktionary's crat on 3 different channels (Wiktionary, Wikipedia and Wikidata). If he doesn't respond within a month from now, can you just go ahead and grant sysop flag to the user elected by the community? We don't want to decrat someone just because of one isolated incident. Thanks! Nguyentrongphu (talk) 04:19, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Nguyentrongphu, yes, I personally think that would be reasonable enough at that point, though I will consult with colleagues before undertaking such an action. I have also now messaged them on Facebook and via Jabber, hopefully one of our attempts to reach them does succeed. --Base (talk) 04:45, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

--Base (talk) 12:57, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

--7elteven (talk) 12:49, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

16:15, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

--Base (talk) 19:31, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
22:51, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
--Base (talk) 23:07, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

A request to have the deletion of my user-page undone

[edit]

Hi Base: I know this is ancient history, but until today I did not have the courage to ask you about this. In 2017 you deleted my user page with this explanation:"not created by the user", and I have always been puzzled by your action.

I simply cannot figure out why anyone would want to put information on my user-page that was so offensive that it required an admin to delete the page, rather than simply reverting the content if it was deemed offensive.

I would like to have my page returned to the same condition it was in on the day it was deleted. I am particularly interested in the contribution history of my page.

Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:52, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ottawahitech. It had one revision only, so I could not revert it, so had to delete it instead :) It was created by User:Breezy macma and said "Beyonce and nicki minaj". The user was just making nonsense edits here and there. --Base (talk) 17:47, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

To help set priorities for the SWAN agenda, and also to help manage which global conversations should be a focus in general, we have set up and invite everyone to participate at this SWAN priorities form.

Possible topics include Community Board seats, Interim Global Council, Strategy prioritization follow-up events, Branding, Universal Code of Conduct, Grant strategy, and WMF CEO search. That is a lot of things, which are most important to cover in our upcoming SWAN meeting?

Following the regular call, in SWAN after hours: Wikimedia Meet Jitsi social event with brainstorming for possible Nano Charter ideas, plus any other topics.

A few question in regards to TranslateWiki

[edit]

Hey there, User:Base! I hope all's well with you.

You granted me temporary adminship on December 2 for hyw Wikipedia (view here) and I've got a question! I know TranslateWiki interface translations take time, but some features have not yet changed. For example, hyw Wiki search filters are still the default from hy Wiki, even though there are no such terms left untranslated on TW. Any advice on that? Please let me know if you can be of any help with this, as I'm a little confused.

Best, Shahen --Շահէն (talk) 14:03, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Շահէն, hello. Do you mean "Search by relevance" and such? It is in this group, it has quite a few messages to be translated: https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&group=ext-advancedsearch&language=hyw&filter=!translated&action=translate . If you add ?uselang=qqx (or &uselang=qqx if the URL already had a "?") to the URL then you will load the page with message names instead of their values. Then you can go to TWN (TranslateWiki.Net) and open the page MediaWiki:<the message name>/hyw and edit it. Or you can just search for translations using the search field on TWN main page. --Base (talk) 00:17, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi User:Base! I know how to translate these, but sometimes content that have been translated on TranslateWiki are still in default mode when you check it on the interface of hyw Wiki. Let me know if there's something I'm missing. Is there something interface admins should do from backend, or is this completely solvable via TranslateWiki by regular users as well? Please advise, and thank you again for your swift reply! Best, --Շահէն (talk) 12:44, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Email address to contact the Wikimedia Ukraine chapter

[edit]

Greetings, Bohdan! This is User:Deborahjay, communities coordinator for the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) 2021 campaign. I'm updating our list of email addresses and contact people for chapters and user groups worldwide. Please note a discrepancy in email addresses for the Wikimedia Ukraine chapter:

Perhaps the optimal action would be to reconcile these two and ping me here. I'll watch for your response. Thanks! -- Deborahjay (talk) 08:35, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Deborahjay, hi, both email addresses are valid, but info@ is better when timely response is required at the moment. There is also wikimedia-ua-announce(_AT_)lists.wikimedia.org where we have public announcements about our activities (open to both members and non-members) and wikimediaua(_AT_)lists.wikimedia.org is our member only private list. --Base (talk) 08:11, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much, Bohdan, for the info and swift reply! As WPWP's outreach stage aims to put a user name for contact each affiliate, may I list yours as chapter secretary? -- Deborahjay (talk) 09:38, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

User talk:85.238.102.83

[edit]

Hi. I would have an expectation that as a local admin that where you are blocking someone, that you are in communication with them, rather than playing hand of God only. This is especially the case where you have blocked someone on more than one occasion. Otherwise bringing the matter to your fellow admins attention and informing them of the situation. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:30, 4 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, billinghurst, I hoped that the action summary I have given when blocking both times was providing sufficient information, but if not I am truly sorry. I hope that the explanation I have given on Minorax's talk page explains the situation better. And FYI as I am 99% sure that the person starting that topic there is the same person as the one blocked, I am going to block them as well. --Base (talk) 14:58, 5 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
For the record I have moved forward to block the ISP range as they kept evading. I have provided some more context at Minorax's talk page. --Base (talk) 15:50, 5 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Something that we may wish to consider in time is range blocks solely focused on Translation: ns where we have specific user problems, and we can deal with the other issues as they arise with targeted blocks, and abuse filters. Of course I could always write an abuse filter solely focused on Translation: ns and restrict based on IP addresses and other like components, but partial blocks just seems so much easier club to handle.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:28, 5 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
It is very unfortunate that Translate does not let one protect particular translation pages. In this case protecting a couple of Ukrainian translations of UCoC and potentially a few other things would do the job (at least it will bring down the frustration of users that were working on those and had to keep an eye on what the LTA is doing to fix it back). A partial block is a good idea I haven't thought about it, because although it is unlikely to have someone from those ISPs being active on Meta as a good faith editor (because there are really just a handful of Ukrainians active here) there is this risk anyway so it is good to limit the harm. As to AbuseFilter well yeah it is possible to create one, but it is usually a pain to maintain those especially when you are dealing with someone with an agenda rather than just a bunch of spambots. --Base (talk) 07:20, 6 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst For the record, filter 277 is now in place after I had to block a dozen IPs (and revert ~10 translation edits per IP) within an hour or so. ~~~~

@1234qwer1234qwer4: Consider doing harder targeted IP blocks for a longer period. As in block IP ranges from Translation: ns for a longer period. We can also consider stopping IP edits on the uk-lang page stem. Sometimes we have to apply benevolent hardships.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:23, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Billinghurst, this is a long-term abuser. We don't usually do partial blocks for them. ~~~~

@1234qwer1234qwer4: I am not a nonce. I don't normally hand out gratuitous advice, so ... You range blocked for a few days, and I am suggesting that it would be possible to range block a namespace for longer with little likelihood of problematic consequences and maximising the elimination of the problem that we encounter.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:19, 5 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
The edit filter should be stopping all problematic edits anyway, but feel free to adjust the block settings for it. I am not sure which range you are talking about. Sorry if I sounded unfriendly. ~~~~

Anthere, Riurik is wondering why it isn't written who has granted rights to you and the others. To which I responded that in times of the dinosaurs literacy wasn't invented yet :) Obviously your rights predate proper logs :) --Base (talk) 22:59, 28 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Any idea where the permissions changed were logged in some form back in the days? Or did people just poke each other on IRC to have flags granted and that was it? --Base (talk) 09:59, 29 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I completely confirm that Looxix (who is no more active I believe) and I are dinosaurs and precede many logs set ups. Before single log-in, I used to have Account #3 on the French Wikipedia with MediaWiki (and Brion Vibber had #1 and #2...). And I became an admin in the first version of the software (over a year before Mediawiki was installed), when there was no admin rights management at all ! I actually was given direct access to the server by Jimbo around summer 2002, and I was deleting articles using code directly on the server (oh my God !!!). So yeah... my first rights on Wikipedia were granted by Jimbo... On Commons, the rights were granted by Eloquence. On meta... I have no memory, very likely Brion Vibber. DonRumata

[edit]

@Герман Мейстер

--Base (talk) 09:56, 29 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

global lock request

[edit]

My apologies for writing here. Allow me to explain the situation: I have been trying to submit global lock request for my account on the according page, but it seems I have no permissions to do that.

In attempt to submit request on Special:MyLanguage/Steward_requests/Global I had been blocked by abuse filter, so trying to write there is pointless.

Next, it seems messages sent through Special:EmailUser are ignored because of preferences for "brand-new accounts" (zero edits), so the road is closed here, too.

Since EmailUser does not work for me here, I were supposed to mail you directly, but I totally forgot that yandex banned protonmail from receiving mail, so it bounced my mail back to me.

It seems the sole option to contact you is to write here, unfortunately.

The account is not used (no contributions and no desire to return) and e-mail is unlinked. It is redundant of me to say that it can be compromised in the future to cause cross-wiki harm.

I do not object to be checked by CUs.

And again, I bring my apologies for writing here. I have no idea what to do after stepping on these broken rakes for the whole day. --Renamed user 13B2F31A93 (talk) 14:15, 29 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

SecurePoll для рувики

И ты посмотри на User_talk:JSutherland_(WMF)#Ruwiki_users_needs_to_test_secret_ballot_through_SecurePoll, знаешь ли, как нам помочь? MBH (talk) 13:33, 6 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

--Base (talk) 13:41, 6 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
MBH (talk) 14:25, 6 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
--Base (talk) 14:36, 6 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Source language

[edit]

Hello Base. I have a translation set up issue. I wanted to set up translation for https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiChallenge_Ecoles_d%27Afrique, but my source language is French, not English. I have looked in depth, but have not found how to set up French as the source language. How does that work ? Anthere (talk) 16:57, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Anthere, you have to change the content language to French. If you open page information there would be a link to do that. And from then on you just tag page for translation and Translate would figure out that translation has to be from French. --Base (talk) 19:47, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that I do not see where to find that « Information Page ». The way I did it is that I had the content in French at WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique. I added the language tags, and then I added all the translate elements. At no point I could see a place where I could state that the content was actually in French. When I clicked on the generation of all translation tags, it just did it, but did not ask me in which language it was. So automatically, the system assumed that it is in English.
So I suppose what you are saying is that I should pretend to translate the source content in French (which would be simply copy pasting Source in French, to French subpage). And then translating the source itself from French to English ? This is kinda weird, but I do not see how else to do it. Anthere (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:26, 10 November 2021 (UTC).Reply
But bottom line... this system means that only English can be the source. Which somewhat sucks... Anthere (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:29, 10 November 2021 (UTC).Reply
😅. Anthere, I actually also sent you a video in Telegram yesterday, but I did not realise you are not online, sorry, I should have just been clearer here. Pqge information is in the sidebar. I could give the direct link but I want people to be able to find the pages on their own (you and whomever would be reading this else). What should be done now is the page has to be removed from translation, the content language of the source changed, and then translation has to be enabled again. --Base (talk) 09:10, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I did not see it yesterday ! Now, I GET IT. Thanks. Learned something today... I am good. Anthere (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:59, 10 November 2021 (UTC).Reply

--Base (talk) 09:57, 12 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

(65 vs 20). – Mrakia 22:45, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sir Shurf (talk) 08:14, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
--Base (talk) 10:26, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Base! – Mrakia 01:31, 11 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
– Mrakia 01:31, 11 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sir Shurf (talk) 18:11, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello! I noticed that you locked the LTAs I reported and deleted the pages they created. I'm curious if it would be permissible to delete pages the LTA's created on other wikis? (I noticed that one of them created a page on zh Wiki) ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:56, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Blaze Wolf, on bigger wikis it is better to ask local admins to deal with deletion. It is permitted for stewards to act in case of cross-wiki clean up, but that is something we try to avoid usually. Base (talk) 19:25, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Breton translations

[edit]

Hello,

I am not sure yet how translations work here. I translated the sound logo banners, apparently they should be proofread but I doubt anyone will do it. What should I do ? Huñvreüs (talk) 11:18, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Huñvreüs, thank you. Well, in the perfect world there indeed should be at least two translators involved, one to translate and another to proofread. Realistically, though it is quite rare that people proofread, so when it comes to me I approve everything that looks to be in the correct language and isn't an obvious vandalism :) I have now published Breton translation for these two, but ping SPatton (WMF), Pcoombe (WMF), SCervantes (WMF), DerHexer, as people involved with the banner, there are more translations to publish, I would only have an opportunity to look through them later into European afternoon/evening, so you might do that faster.

[edit]

BlackStar1991 (talk) BlackStar1991 (talk) 20:56, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

--Base (talk) 21:03, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
BlackStar1991 (talk) 05:43, 5 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!

This is not necessary. The version now is also not Tetun I suspect, and the translation for the first line is now still in French, and therefore I have turned of this language target for this banner yesterday. I am actually watching the translations for this banner to see if turning of the targeting at least prevents users for landing on this buggy translation. (Also: please don't delete this translations because of visibility in the phabricator ticket ;-). Ciell (talk) 10:55, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Denied request on SRP

[edit]

Hello Base, per my request on the SRP page, I have one more question. I have not started a discussion on a single of the mentioned projects so far (I'm not very active in most of them though), which I am obviously considering, moreover after your advice. What would your, or possibly other stewards', point of view be in the case that the discussion was started, but not a single other user would simply join it (which I consider quite possible on some of the projects, mainly the Slovak ones that haven't had a single user contributing for years)? --V0lkanic (talk) 17:40, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, V0lkanic. The short answer is it is fine if no one joins the discussion. The long answer follows.
While the general framework of how stewards operate is well defined, and in some cases, such as when it comes to the private infromation, it is very strict, there is each individual's steward's discretion involved, so other stewards would have a similar but possibly a slightly different thinking. In other words I can only say for myself with certanity, other stewards are likely to also think along the same lines, but there is an off chance someone might see the situation differently.
When it comes to how I see it, let's look at this situation from the other side, let's say you want to elect a new bureaucrat. In the past, bureacrat flag was given to the local communities with no questions asked. But nowadays, for over a decade now, we want to make sure that the community is ready to have a bureaucrat. What we use as the criteria for that is written down on the MVR page. MVR is not a strict policy, and most people wouldn't care if you have 14 votes instead of 15 if it is clear that there is indeed a big enough community and all the votes are valid, but the point is that there is this threshold to elect a bureaucrat. It obviously would not be met on the Slovak projects at the moment. On the other hand, when it comes to the local permissions votes in general, say for a temporary adminship, it is enough that no one opposes even if no one supports you. If there is no community but you are willing to work on the project it does not have to be that you need another person there just to vote for you to enable you do delete spam. On a side note, that makes it extremely ridiculous when people engage in canvassing to get some votes in such situations, as it is making it worse, not better (like it is pretty clear that the bjnwiki request currently on SRP most likely involves canvassing, and so did the gorwikt ones, most likely people were invited to vote in some off-wiki chat).
So with that in mind, the bureaucrat rights rights requiring to meet a certain threshold and the fact that in wikis with no community we do not expect for any community to magically appear for the vote, in fact we'd rather it does not happen like that, I am saying that go ahead with the votes for demotion, and it is okay if there would be no one. There are only two caveats, if someone does show up and votes against your proposal, and that is a valid community member or even if they are not but their point would be very strong, then there is of course a chance that the vote would fail. But that is the point of having a vote. Another is that I haven't checked if Slovak wikis have any procedures in place. If theoretically there are some, some might be ignored (e.g. if there is indeed a local requirement for a certain number of votes which is just imposible to reach now), but most you should follow (e.g. if the vote has to be a certain number of days long or has to be announced on certain pages.
I am sorry for the longer text, hopefully this helps you, if no feel free to reach with further questions. --Base (talk) 13:45, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for your response. This is exactly the information I needed which simply cannot be found on the help pages (obviously). I'll certainly consider calling for the demotion vote on some of the projects. V0lkanic (talk) 17:01, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Just a note

[edit]

I'm not really aware of the struggle behind one of the GS elections, but I was wondering why you removed a vote while writing that you wouldn't. This is just for the record, as the consensus seems pretty clear. Ciao, M/ (talk) 20:42, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Never mind. Now I've seen the global lock. Since I wasn't seeing the strikeout of the local block, I didn't notice the global one. Thank you and sorry for bothering. --M/ (talk) 20:47, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@M7, yeah, I was referring to Jphwra's vote, despite him being canvassed by an LTA I cannot really remove his vote, he is a valid user. Whilst LTA's vote of course has no place there. --20:59, 18 July 2023 (UTC) Base (talk) 20:59, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, dear Base! How are you? I would like to draw your attention to the request for comment that I made in July, 2023. As the situation has deteriorated since then towards the open vote fraud by the bureaucrat, a timely consensus on the part of stewards has become even more essential for the implemention of rules in Belarusian Classical Wikipedia.
