  3. Wikijunior enrichment: Increase the number of age-appropriate non-fiction books for children (from birth to age 12) in Bengali Wikibooks.

  5. Engage existing editors: Involve existing editors and help them to develop their skills.

Project Plan

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

Wiki Loves Women has already achieved progressive success in implementing Wikimedia Strategy 2030. In the continuation of last year, we are going to organize it again, but a little differently. Most of the articles that have been made in it over the years are mainly biographical articles; one of the aims was to reduce the gender gap in Wikipedia. The project has certainly had significant success in that endeavor. But this time, instead of a biographical article, we want to focus on the obstacles and issues in bridging the gender gap. Although Wikipedia in South Asian languages has enough articles on women's biographies, there are very few articles on gender gaps and women's empowerment. Moreover, there was no work on it on a wide scale. Another goal of Wiki Loves Women was to increase women's participation in the Wikimedia projects, but in this case it is still lagging far behind in South Asian communities. With all this in mind, this time we will try to meet these two incomplete goals through Wiki Loves Women South Asia 2021.
Secondly, although the project is called Wiki Loves Women, we will be organizing an experimental sub-contest this year as well. According to UNICEF, over half of the world's children experience severe violence. It is estimated that 64 per cent of these children are in South Asia.[1] In the same article, they also clarified that not only for the victim but also for anyone who witnesses the violence, the best way to address violence is to prevent it. But it is noteworthy that as part of an encyclopedia, no initiative has been taken to introduce child abuse and neglect to Wikipedia communities in the region. So, for the first time, we are organizing Wiki Loves Children on Bengali Wikipedia and Wikibooks. Like other wikibooks, the Bengali Wikibooks has a project for children called Wikijunior (উইকিশৈশব), but is currently almost inactive. Therefore, we have included it in the project with the aim of enriching and expanding its use in online learning activities for junior students. Especially during the Covid-19 pandemic period it can play a vital role in online learning and we will try to make Wikibooks (especially Wikijunior) a child-friendly alternative to Wikipedia.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We will inform existing members of the movement through the different mailing lists available. Contest information would also be shared on different social media and chat platforms, as well as WLW official facebook pages ands zoom cloud meetings room.

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

The articles will be primarily reviewed by a team of volunteer juries from the respective language communities and then judged by the local organizing team. No one can review his own article. The global organizing team will finally manage the scores. The fountain tool will be used to monitor the progress and activities of the competition. Prizes are given in the form of gift vouchers.

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

This is not a photo contest, but this contest will also try to focus on the use of media files already available on Wikimedia Commons to illustrate Wikipedia and Wikibooks articles.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

No, we are not planning to host any in-person events.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

For the first time, we are putting aside traditional biographies and folklore theme of WLW and giving highest priority to gender gap and equality issues. At the same time, this is our first wikiproject on children issues and the first major project for Bengali Wikibooks.
