According to UNICEF, over half of the world’s children face severe violence, with an alarming 64 percent of these cases occurring in South Asia. Such violence not only harms the direct victims but also affects those who witness it. As UNICEF emphasizes, the best way to combat violence is through prevention — and awareness is the first step.
Yet, despite the global reach and educational influence of Wikipedia and its sister projects, there has been no coordinated initiative within the Wikimedia movement to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect. To address this gap, we are launching a new campaign — Wiki Loves Children — starting from Bengali Wikipedia and Bengali Wikibooks. This initiative will focus on creating and improving content related to child safety, rights, health, and development. A key part of the campaign is the revival of Wikijunior, the child-focused branch of Wikibooks, which has remained mostly inactive in Bengali. By breathing new life into Wikijunior, we aim to build a child-friendly, educational platform that supports online learning for children, especially in the post-Covid era where digital education is more critical than ever. While this project begins on Bengali Wikipedia and Wikibooks, our long-term vision is to expand Wiki Loves Children across other Wikimedia projects and into multiple languages, based on community interest and regional importance. Through collaboration, we hope to make Wikimedia a safer, more inclusive, and empowering space for younger audiences around the world. |
