Description - Wiki Loves AfroDemics is an annual campaign aimed at enhancing the representation of African academics and scientists on Wikipedia. The campaign achieves this by creating new articles and improving existing ones in any language, including translations, throughout December. Its objective is to highlight the contributions of African academics who have made significant contributions in various fields, making this information more accessible to a wider audience. It's an opportunity to increase their visibility and bridge the knowledge gap.

Discussion[edit]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

@Kaizenify and Ibjaja055: there are a couple of issues with your request:

Your banner is not suitable:

  • This [1] is what a standard banner looks like (preview [2]). Example in practice: [3] (preview [4]). A little more complex [5] (preview [6])
  • If you don't want to use a banner similar to existing / standard banners, you'll either need to find a CentralNotice admin who is willing to spend the time setting up such a banner or provide the HTML/CSS/JavaScript yourself. See CentralNotice/Banner guidelines#Code and Help:CentralNotice#Banners for more information on how to code your own banner.
  • Using a standard banner, the image you provided would appear so small that people could not read the text
  • Your image doesn't seem suitable for varying banner-sizes (e.g. mobile vs. desktop)
  • Even though you are not directly using an external weblink, using a QR-code instead at the banner image which opens a link to a WhatApp group doesn't seem in line with CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Banner requirements

Your request needs some further action:

  • Possible interference with the Wikimedia fundraising campaign at enwiki

Central Notice Settings:

  • It would be helpful if you provided a complete list of all Wikipedia language versions you want to reach out to, if you want to avoid a CentralNotice admin potentially missing some languages versions while scrolling through List of Wikipedias by country or similar pages and choosing for themselves.
  • Are you sure you want to use this banner for logged-out users as well, even though it seems directed to users already experienced in creating/editing articles?

@Johannnes89 thank you very much for your time. I have edited the notice based on your observations. Here are the breakdowns;
  • The banner has been adjusted using HTML/CSS/JavaScript
  • The QR Code has been removed from the banner
  • The notice has been added to the calendar
  • The external partner has been removed from the notice
  • The list of countries and languages has been added to it
  • The banner has been restricted to logged in users only.

@Ibjaja055 thanks for the updated banner, but that's not exactly what I meant. Based on what you provided I build a simplified version: Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/Wiki Loves AfroDemics 2023. You can see the banner code in the „edit banner“ section. Here is a preview for the desktop version which shows some initial problems: Text on images generally doesn't work very well, especially on small banner sizes -> „Increasing the visibility of African Scholars“ is not readable.
And if you take a look at the mobile preview on your smartphone you will notice some further problems: banner text + image overlapping / banner taking up almost the whole screen.
Easiest solution would be to drop your banner image entirely and just use the AfroDemics logo. Possible alternatives: Only displaying the banner on laptop / desktop computers. Or building an alternative mobile version which only uses the logo while the desktop version may still use both images (in that case, the banner still needs some fixing -> drop the text which is not readable). @Johannnes89 Thank you very much for your time and guidance. I am going with best solution, I have dropped the banner image. Ibjaja055 (talk) 21:16, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ibjaja055 that's indeed by far the easiest solution, thanks. I've updated the banner accordingly (click the preview links from my previous answer above to review the changes on mobile/desktop). I also created the banner campaign [8]. Please review the settings (especially languages/regions) in case I made a mistake.
While setting up the campaign I noticed something: Do you really want this banner campaign to last until December 31? First of all the banner text itself says December 30 instead of 31. But according to your landing page [9] the contest is over on December 23 anyways? --Johannnes89 (talk) 22:34, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannnes89Thank you very much for drawing my attention to the issue. I have amended the date on the landing page to reflect Dec 1-30. We want the contest to last for 30 days. Also, I have reviewed the language and everything looks perfect. Ibjaja055 (talk) 14:24, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, campaign and banner are set up and will be running as scheduled. --Johannnes89 (talk) 21:11, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
