What is the purpose of Campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description - Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India) (WLUS) is a public photo competition on Wikimedia Commons for use in the project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. With the support from Wikimedia India Chapter, and the inspiration drawn from Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) and Wiki Loves Food (WLF), this is the first iteration of its kind in 2017. This year, the predominant aim of the project is to increase the count of good images of various uniformed services operating in the Indian sub-continent. Apart from the primary goal, as mentioned above, the project also envisions to foster the idea of contributing images to Commons and to pool in more contributors into the movement on a national scale. WMF has approved the grant for this project.

Central Notice Admin comments[edit]

Hey @Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: - I have a few comments:

- Firstly, banner campaigns aren't meant to be used for such long periods of time. I recommend us running a set of staggered campaigns. Running for 2 weeks at the beginning, one week in the middle of the campaign and then another week to close the campaign off.
- Secondly, I have concerns about encouraging members of the public to go around photographing members of armed or police forces. They don't always approve of people doing this. Are you doing this in partnership with any sort of government organisation? Is this a WMF grant funded activity? Seddon (WMF) (talk) 10:11, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): Thanks for the comments. OK, I agree with you regarding the first point, changed it accordingly. Regarding point 2, project doesn't encourage any contributor to trespass a military or law enforced restricted installation for clicking the photographs. They can capture them in the public order i.e. whatever is available to the public and is not restricted. If you have any doubts regarding what kind of photographs are to be captured, please see the example images section on FAQ page of the project page on Commons. Yes, this project is funded by WMF, you may check it here. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 15:06, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Apart from this, please let me know the things to create the banner. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 15:13, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): Any update on this. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 02:17, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): We're getting close to the contest start date, we've already received the grant amount and also configured the upload wizard. Please comment on this. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 06:15, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: Apologies for the delay. I was on leave last week for a family illness. Happy for this campaign to go ahead. Ill get a banner design mockup to you later this week :) Seddon (WMF) (talk) 10:28, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): Greetings, what is the status of banner design? The content begins on 15 May 2017 i.e. within 3 days. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 19:49, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: So one thing I realised we are missing is the text to go into the banner. Here are some suggestions:
  • "Share photographs of India's proud uniformed services and maybe win prizes"
  • "Wiki Loves Uniformed Services: Share photos, help Wikipedia and win!"
The banner will look something like this. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 01:51, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): Many thanks for the banner. I suggest, Upload photographs of India's uniformed services and win prizes worth INR 100,000 /- The prize amount will attract the users. I request you increase the size of the logo. Isn't a two line notice possible, something like this:
Wiki Loves Uniformed Services
Upload photographs of India's uniformed services and win prizes worth INR 100,000 /-
--Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 12:03, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: Take a look here. Unfortunately if the logo was any larger, the banner on mobile would be affected. If you could look over the banner and also add translations for other languages you would like the banner in and if you are happy we can get this banner up later today. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 02:00, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): I am happy with that. But the only thing is the link it is being directed to. It links to the Wikimedia movement strategy page, but not the contest page on commons. Please fix this before it is up. All good except that. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 02:20, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: - The first campaign is up and will run for two weeks as agreed :) Any issues, get in touch :) Seddon (WMF) (talk) 11:12, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]┌─────────────────────────────────┘

@Seddon (WMF): Hi Seddon, the contest deadline has been postponed to 15 September 2015, in the view of 15 August (Independence Day of India). Please let me know for how much more duration may the campaign be on, I mean the central notice. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 15:07, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Seddon (WMF): Hi, please engage this banner from 11 August 2017 to 18 August 2017. This is of immediate urgency. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 14:37, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Uniformed Services (India)
Upload photographs of forts, military museums, buildings, equipment, vehicles, men in uniform, glimpses of parades and flag hoisting ceremonies of 15 August (Independence Day of India), and win prizes worth INR 100,000 /-
  • Is militarism considered compatible with the spirit of free knowledge by the local community? And what does the military have to do with the independence of India? It would be great to include photos of pacific demonstrations, civil servants and so on. --Nemo 19:39, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nemo bis: Hi, I would not say that this promotes militarism? It is just to improve the count of images of Indian uniformed services. We have to change this banner from the previous one because people didn't understand the title the way it was supposed to be. On the independence all the services will showcase their firepower and parades, so it would be good to capture them as they're public. The civil servants are not uniformed. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 14:38, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): Please have a look over this. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 15:34, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): Thanks for putting up the notice, please remove ", and win prizes worth INR 100,000" part from it, and please add the others "forts, military museums, buildings, equipment, vehicles, men in uniform, glimpses of parades", because this has been suggested by the Indian community, please do this with utmost priority and with immediate effect. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 12:12, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I came here to mention that^^^; thanks Krishna. @Seddon (WMF): please remove the above mentioned part of the sentence. Thanks! Jim Carter (talk) 13:01, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon (WMF): The present notice doesn't seem meaningfully correct, please change that to "Upload photographs of Indian uniformed services; forts, military museums, buildings, equipment, vehicles, men in uniform, parades and action, to win prizes." --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 01:22, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: - Hows it looking now? :) Seddon (WMF) (talk) 01:54, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
