From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Since its pilot launch in mid-2021, the Helpdesk has received 38 requests and supported content partnerships from initial concept to implementation. Each project is vetted and prioritized by our international Expert Committee, ensuring tailored workflows, licensing guidance, technical training, and connections with relevant experts across the Wikimedia movement.

When Baglama2 broke down, the Helpdesk was asked for support. While the scope would be beyond the Helpdesk, the Helpdesk gathered involved people for a conversation to understand the issues with Metrics tools, to gather input and knowledge for strategic work with software.

Historical snapshot: Helpdesk requests (2021–mid-2025)

[edit]

An analysis of the 32 requests received by the Helpdesk between 2021 and the first half of 2025 highlights several trends in its development and global reach.

Volume over time

  • 2022 – 31.4% (10 of 32).
  • 2023 – 51.4% (17 of 32), boosted by 13 Wiki Loves Earth subprojects.
  • 2024 – 5.7% (2 of 32), reflecting an intentional slowdown to clear the backlog.
  • 2025, first half – 2.9% (1 of 32).

Regional distribution

  • Sub-Saharan Africa – 20%
  • Northern and Western Europe – 17.1%
  • Middle East and North Africa – 17.1%
  • South Asia – 14.3%
  • Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia – 11.4%
  • Other regions, including the Americas and Oceania – 20.1%

Top requesting countries

  • India – 11.4%
  • United Kingdom – 8.6%
  • Guinea – 5.7%
  • Benin, Ukraine, New Zealand, Peru and Lebanon each represent individual cases illustrating the Helpdesk's global reach.

Status of requests in this historical dataset

  • Ongoing – 56.7%
  • Stalled – 13.3%
  • Resolved – 10%
  • No further work needed – 6.7%
  • Call held, discussion and pending – 3.3% each

Key takeaways

  • Activity peaked during 2022 and 2023, partly because of the expansion of the Wiki Loves Earth project.
  • Strong participation from underrepresented regions supports the Hub's equity goals.
  • Future reporting would benefit from more consistent country naming and clearer tracking of project closure.
