I'm very grateful to the organizers for giving me the opportunity to directly interact and learn from Wikimedians from the ESEAP region. The 2024 ESEAP conference marks my second fully funded attendance (following the 2023 Wikipedia in Singapore). The experience of attending this conference has allowed me to connect with more people and contribute to the development and growth of the Wiki community.

Attending the 2024 ESEAP conference in Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) was incredibly rewarding. Firstly, within the approximately seventy sessions of the conference, there were numerous subtle interactions with over a hundred international participants. Engaging with Wikimedians from different regions provided valuable examples in presentation sharing, experimental research, and research findings. I played two roles during this conference, as both a speaker and participant, and found both roles to be engaging. However, being part of the organizing team was definitely an exciting opportunity.


Things learned at the conference[edit]

From the ESEAP Conference 2024, I gained the following insights:

  • Continuous Learning: There is still significant groundwork to be done to deepen our understanding of Wikimedia projects. This enhanced understanding will undoubtedly improve our efficiency in future contributions.

  • Editing Wiktionary: One way to preserve languages, especially indigenous languages, is by adding content to Wikidata.

  • Community Engagement: Interacting with different Wikimedia communities provides valuable perspectives that help us overcome challenges within Wikimedia projects, particularly in recruiting more contributors.

  • Using Wikidata: I learned how to preserve my language, Kadazandusun, using Wiktionary and Lingua Libre. These platforms help people accurately understand and pronounce the language.

  • The ESEAP conference is a biannual event aimed at bringing together Wikimedia communities from the ESEAP (East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific) region. This year, the ESEAP conference was organized by Wikimedia Malaysia and the Wikimedia ESEAP Regional Cooperation Organization. The 2024 ESEAP conference was held from May 10th to 12th, 2024, in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The 2024 ESEAP conference was the second conference I attended with a scholarship, following the 2023 Wikimania in Singapore.

I attended the sessions listed below:

Day1 / 10 May 2024[edit]

The meeting facilitates discussions and integration through real-time online collaboration, enhancing discussion efficiency. This immediate implementation is an experience that was not possible in previous conferences.

Day2 / 11 May 2024[edit]

The primary focus is on the unique aspects and shortcomings of crowd-sourced cloud learning. Supplementary learning includes the exploration of new technologies.

Day3 / 12 May 2024[edit]

Plans after the conference[edit]

  • Develop more Wikimedia projects.
  • Actively participate in various Wikimedia initiatives and activities.
  • Utilize acquired knowledge to initiate more projects for enhancing community engagement in Wikimedia and further advocating for indigenous languages and cultures through Wikimedia.
  • Continuously innovate to contribute more valuable content to various Wikimedia projects.
  • Persistently share learning and experiences with others to spark their interest in Wikimedia and cultural preservation.

Comments/Suggestions about the conference[edit]

  • This conference primarily involved three rooms, but the allocation of tasks seemed less than ideal (network issues / equipment problems / audio issues).

Suggestion: To effectively address these issues, dedicated project teams should be established for each.

  • The deadline for each task cannot be set before the next meeting.

The summary in the meeting agenda is crucial. It determines the action plan decided in the meeting, and there are many tasks for members to complete before the next meeting. Setting the deadline before the next meeting would likely result in errors for most tasks.
