Background
ESEAP Conference 2024 hosted by the Persidangan Wikimedia Malaysia from May 10-12 at Le Meridien in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia was the first conference I have attended since joining the PhilWiki Community in 2020. I am truly grateful and honored to have been selected as one of the scholarship recipients, despite my relatively brief tenure within the organization.
In my role as Diversity Committee Chair of Philippine Wikimedia Community, Inc., I find that the conference theme"collaboration beyond the horizon" aptly reflects the rich diversity of culture and backgrounds among the participants.
Learnings from the Conference
Intercultural Communication
Communicating with individuals from various cultures holds a significant value for me. As an English teacher, facilitating language learning is quite challenging. However, this experience offers insights I can impart to my students underscoring the importance of sensitivity, kindness, and humility. I appreciate the presence of the Friendly Space Policy at the conference, which aligns with these values.
Contribution and Participation
Utilization of Wikimedia in Lessons
Irvin P. Sto. This discussion aligns with overarching theme of, collaboration beyond the horizon as our goal is to share the educational initiatives in the Philippines that can resonate with communities across ESEAP and beyond. We hope that through this effort, we have provided a new approach to our fellow Wikimedian educators facing difficulties in incorporating Wikipedia into academic setting.
Plans After the Conference
Diversity As Diversity Committee Chair, I intend to apply the knowledge I gained from the conference to plan upcoming projects and activities. Moreover, I am committed to advancing my skills as a Wikimedian, consistently contributing to the translation and editing of articles on https://bcl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panginot_na_Pahina.
Education In our Learning Action Cell (LAC) sessions, I plan to echo my conference experiences and insights. I strongly believe that engaging more teachers in the Wikimedia movement will play a crucial role in advocating for open, free, and reliable sources such as Wikipedia.
Comments and Suggestions
Venue was superb, food was delectable, staff was approachable. Well, what else can I say? Congratulations Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia for a successful event! I had a pleasant and memorable experience in my 5 day stay in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
