Female Yorùbá Wikipedia Editors is a group of female editors dedicated to promoting Wikimedia projects in Yorùbá Language. The group is open to membership by all interested female individuals, girls, ladies and women. The Yorùbá culture will be an important part of the different projects that this group will be undertaking.

Objectives[edit]

  • To promote awareness of Wikimedia projects related to Yorùbá language in Nigeria.
  • To increase number of female Yorùbá Wikipedia editors.
  • To bridge the gap between of female contents on Wikipedia_yo.
  • To establish the development of Wikimedia projects in Yorùbá language, and nurture them to become full projects.
  • To promote editing of Wikimedia projects in Yorùbá language by organizing events and activities, and recruiting new editors.
  • To promote the development of structured data among female Yorùbá language editors with the use of Wikidata.
  • To equip editors of projects in Yorùbá language with the skill and ability for the continuous development of Wikipedia projects.

Activities[edit]

This user group plans to hold and support the following activities:

Creating culture-related articles: The first activity of this group of editors will focus on the belief of the Yoruba ethnic group that the female, depicted for all feminine gender with the ability to nurture new life (child), have a role of nurturing children to be morally upright, responsible and accountable for their actions. Hence, articles related to folklores teaching these virtues according to the beliefs of the Yorubas will be created on yo.wikipedia.

Other activities that will follow include:

  • Meetings: the user group will be organising meet-ups for its members in order to recruit new members, to exchange ideas and to find ways to support them to continue editing the projects in areas where help will be needed.
  • Trainings/Edit-a-thons: to help new female Yoruba editors to learn editing techniques, to create, translate and improve content in all Wikimedia projects or work on and develop a certain topic which will promote the project.
  • Editing contests: the group will be organizing editing contests to introduce new editors to Wikipedia and encourage existing regular editors to keep editing Wikimedia projects.
  • Photographic Contest and Trips: the group will also organise trips and contests to encourage users to upload and document files to wikicommons which will be used in all Wikimedia projects. This trip will be across Yoruba speaking states in Nigeria and other parts of Africa where Yoruba is spoken.

Planned Activities For 2022[edit]

  • Meetups (Edit-a-thons for Female Yoruba Wikipedia Editors in Incubator): We plan to hold a meetup (physical) where we will exchange ideas and find ways to contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia contents in incubator. New editors will be trained followed by edit-a-thons on Notable Nigerian Women, where there articles will be translated to Yoruba. The meeting is scheduled to hold in October 2022. The edit-a-thon will run from October through December 2022.
