Facilitators/Speakers: Brigitte Vézina Time block: Morning Beginning: 9:00
Location: 410 Duration: 45 min
Description:

Creative Commons’ Towards a Recommendation on Open Culture (TAROC) is a community initiative aiming to develop an international policy framework to recognize the importance of and support global open sharing of culture. As we build this initiative, we are seeking community engagement from GLAM professionals.

In September last year, UNESCO declared culture a global public good at Mondiacult 2022. With the successes of the 2019 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Educational Resources and 2021 Recommendation on Open Science, the world looks to UNESCO’s leadership to create the necessary international framework that would unlock the possibilities of equitable, ethical, and respectful sharing of cultural heritage in the digital age: a UNESCO Recommendation on Open Culture.

In this session, we will present our work around the initiative thus far and what we plan next. We will also hold space to hear from participants in Latin America about how open culture experiences in the region could help inform this international initiative.

Read more about TAROC in English, Shqip, français, Español, 日本語, Türkçe, italiano, عربي on our Open Culture Resources page.

Facilitators/Speakers: Patricia Díaz Rubio, Nassima Chahboun, João Alexandre Peschanski, Alcira Sandoval (Unesco Montevideo) Time block: Morning Beginning: 10:30
Location: Auditorium Duration: 1 hr
Description:

The world loses irreplaceable pieces of knowledge all the time due to wars, fires, natural disasters, and other crises, especially in museums, libraries, and archives, but also external objects such as monuments. As the world's largest and most available source of knowledge, the Wikimedia movement and its projects have not only the ability but also the duty, to share those objects and safeguard them. In this panel, we intend to show how we can accomplish that together, why it is important, what are the accessibility challenges and how we can advocate to overcome them.

In order to safeguard those objects, the country where those objects are situated should have Copyright Laws that allow not only allows proper digitization and documentation, but also policies that allow the sharing of reproductions, such as Freedom of Panorama, Open Licenses guidelines, and other Copyright considerations, which are all accomplished by Copyright Reforms.

The presentations for this session are planned to introduce the importance of the topic, share ideas and challenges both from the Cultural Heritage and Advocacy sides and find pathways of collaboration.

Facilitators/Speakers: Connor Benedict Time block: Afternoon Beginning: 16:00
Location: 111 Duration: 1 hr
Description:

Can you believe there isn't an article on Wikipedia about Open Access in the Culture Heritage and Creative sectors? In this workshop we invite our friends in the Wiki-movement to join forces with all the Open Culture professionals to draft a Wikipedia article together about Open Culture. An outline on the history and key milestones will be provided for context.

We have prepared an outline on etherpad to gather resources in advance and begin to structure a good way to use our time together. https://ethercalc.net/gbg5pdeai1vs

The session will be combine both resource finding and drafting content. If you're more interested in drafting text please check the resources collected in advance and add yours! Our goal is to publish something in a few languages, even if it's just a paragraph, while at the conference.
