Grants:IdeaLab/Yes, I Use Wikipedia

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Yes, I Use Wikipedia
This is Wikipedia awareness program which will cover educating & engaging users in a specific target segment. This offline campaign will be held in Schools, Colleges & Universities situated in the rural part of India.

1. We will take a survey prior to the program to evaluate existing knowledge & idea about Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation of all students.

2. The workshop will educate students about Wikipedia and the benefits of it. I & my team of professionals will take the session to explain, how they can use Wikimedia in their daily life at any point of time with one touch. How they can help their family members & relatives by asking them to use Wikipedia.

3. We will take a test & provide a gift at the end of our workshop. The gift should be promoting the Brand Name 'Wikimedia' or 'Wikipedia'. It should be worthy for the student with good quality. For an instance, we will plan to gift 'Laptop Bag' to university students with proper branding and imprinting Student name as well.

4. The test will be online or offline, in both the case students will get connected through social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, etc.

5. Vans/Cars will be fabricated with Wikipedia branding elements and move around the rural areas during the campaign.

Note: The same model can be replicated in city areas of India as well.

Audience

[edit]

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?

[edit]

Try to be as specific as possible about this group.
Students - From Nursery Kids to Ph.D. scholars in Rural India

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?

[edit]

English, Hindi but we will educate them to use their regional languages as well.

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?

[edit]

This can include services and apps in social media, mailing lists, physical spaces like conferences or lectures, or at specific institutions like at a library.
Whatsapp, Email, SMS, Social Media like FB, Twitter, G+, Hangout

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?

[edit]

Think about what they would be interested in reading and learning about; does Wikipedia provide better access to information this group cares about?
All the time, students have questions in their mind, they can get their answers easily & free of cost in Wikimedia. Like in cities, students of class one start copying text from Wikipedia and write up it in their homework. The same we will get replicated by Rural Students as well.

Project idea

[edit]

What language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?

[edit]

English, Hindi, Punjabi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu

How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?

[edit]

We will have the offline events but communications will happen online, once students of schools & universities will get registered with the day one by taking the survey. Both the ways are required to get communicated.

Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?

[edit]

Think about the steps that might involved to make this idea happen, and what you might teach people about your experience or others' experiences using Wikipedia.
Whatever a student needs is the solution to his/her queries. I would show them some presentation available with Wikimedia sources to explain how others are using it practically. A video / interactive session will take through the requirements of Wikipedia in everyone's life.

Their daily homework, holiday homework, projects, competitions & wisdom can be one, that is Wikimedia.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?

[edit]

If you’re not certain about how to respond to this question when starting your idea, you do not need to answer it right now. Campaign participants and Wikimedia Foundation staff can help you consider some options.
Of course, as a part of our plan, we take a survey at the beginning of our workshop and before closing, we are again taking a feedback along with a test to reward students with a branded gift. And we are connecting all possible students through social channels and groups to get engaged. This will analyze outcome easily.

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?

[edit]

Do you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
Need 1. Approval and authority for taking permission to execute events in schools & universities, 2. Resources from Wikimedia 3. Wikimedia staffs to join online during session through video conference 4. A budget & financial help from Wikimedia
