Building Sustainable Climate Literate Society in Imo State and Anambra State, Nigeria

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

One of the biggest crises currently affecting the World today is Climate change. Although it is seen as a global crisis, its impacts are felt locally.e.g the 2022 flood crisis in Nigeria killed over 600 people and displaced over one million persons in different states of the country, occasioned by the deteriorating environmental conditions which has led to destruction of lives and properties. Despite these devastating effects, good percentage of youths in the States still live in Climate change denial due to misinformation, disinformation, lack of environmental education especially in the local languages. These persons have either passed through higher institutions or are still in the process of acquiring tertiary education. This project seeks to Create Awareness on Climate Change,It's impacts and Mitigation.Challenges will be solved by Sensitizing youths on the issue of Climate Change. Many youths and students in the residents have neither heard nor contribute to climate Change mitigation Rather contribute to human caused impact. This project will help in Recruiting new participants to get involve especially on Climate Change. This project is an avenue to bridge Misinformation and disinformation on Wikipedia by editing and creating contents about climate change, bridging knowledge gaps, contribute to diversity by involving translation on languages other than English. participants will learn the basics of Wikipedia and how to source Verifiable informations. This project will Increase Contents on Wikipedia and it's Sister projects, bridge knowledge inequity, Contribute to Diversity and inclusion.Having knowledge on environmental issues and Climate Change mitigation measures translated in the local languages will help to save lifes and properties when they understand what is said in language. The Training will be followed by edit-a-thon and translate -a-thon and contest to create contents on Wikimedia projects, investing in Sustainability of our environment.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The main strategies for this project are:

A. Sensitizing climate change and it's related problems among the youths in the residents. This will build and empower  youths in the residents so they can possess the necessary skills and competencies needed to combat the different environmental issues. The capacity building will include training about Climate Change and related environmental problems, use of Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia to combat fake news about Climate Change and other environmental menace.

B. Organize  stakeholders discussion  around the topic with the  youths in the residents, Student Campaign Organizations, the Ministry of Environment,Mineral Resources, Science & Technology and Waste Management Society of Nigeria with a view of proffering locally focused solutions to the global issue.

C. Contribute to open awareness of climate change and it's related topics in Nigeria by creating a guide editors will use in editing Sustainable Climate Literate Society in Imo State and Anambra State in Nigeria on Wikipedia.

E. Equip them with the necessary Wikipedia editing skills which is needed for them to provide local expert knowledge around the topic on Wikipedia which will therefore ultimately help address both the content and contributor gaps within the Wikimedia knowledge gap.

This approach was chosen because observation and personal interactions among educated  youths revealed low level awareness and knowledge of climate change issues, including ways to mitigate it. As a result, a project of this magnitude will help address climate change mis-information or disinformation, while also equipping them with the necessary Wikipedia editing skills which is needed for them to provide local expert knowledge around the topic.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

To ensure successful implementation of this project, several activities will be carried out both virtually and in-person in the States. These activities include:

1. Creating Climate Change sensitization and awareness for residents of Imo and Anambra State so they can be better informed about the subject matter which includes its causes, mitigation and adaptation strategies. We will start awareness a month before in the Universities and residents.
2. Hosting Stakeholders discussion to proffer solution to Climate Change, as well as to develop action points and goals for the states with respect to undertaking some climate actions within a given period of time.
3. Organizing Wikipedia training to equip the participants with the necessary skills to contribute local and reliable information around the subject on Wikipedia so as to address the content gap in the World`s largest Online Encyclopedia. The Wikipedia training will consist of 3 in-person trainings across the institutions and Networks in the States which will be followed up by series of online training and follow-ups.
Conducting Edit-a-thon: Series of edit-a-thon in Wikipedia will be organized so as to help improve content on Wikipedia, including adding reliable citation to existing content around environmental sustainability. The edit-a-thon will involve 3 in-person edit-a-thons and an online version for interested participants residing outside the state.

This is a 3 months program that involves 4 days training in the first month then 3 days trainings in the second and the last month with series of Edit-a-ton.
