Grant Proposal
[edit]- M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.
Deforestation in Nigeria
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
It is necessary to make information on deforestation (Climate Change and Sustainability) in Nigeria available on Wikipedia. Currently, there is no information on the topic. A search on Wikipedia on “Deforestation in Nigeria using Petscan, Wikidata and List building tool yielded zero articles. A general search using Petscan yielded 37 articles. A quick scan on three of the articles (Deforestation, Afforestation, and Reforestation) shows that they have no information on Nigeria and very little information on Africa. This creates a content, contributor, and reader gap in Wikipedia. The result is that Nigerian citizens have no culturally relevant information on deforestation. It is the intention of this proposal to minimize these gaps.
It is also important that information on deforestation in Nigeria is available for Nigerian users and other researchers on Wikipedia. The information may help to change people's attitudes and behavior towards deforestation and may even inform people on alternatives to deforestation thereby contributing to the drive towards sustainability.
In Nigeria, there is no policy guiding deforestation, even if there is, it is not being implemented. This may not be unconnected with the lack of relevant information to guide policymakers. This proposal, if accepted and implemented, will provide a guide to policymakers on making a policy to combat deforestation in Nigeria by making relevant information available to them. Moreover, we would like to equip a group of professionals in Nigeria with the skill to contribute high-quality content on deforestation (Climate change and Sustainability to Wikimedia). This is to ensure that there are capable hands that will continue to update information on Climate Change and Sustainability as it affects Nigeria.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
My main approaches are as follows. I will:
1. Partner with Institutions (Institute of Climate Change Studies, Energy and Environment; and the Department of Geography, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)) and experienced Wikimedians in Nigerian Federal Universities (Federal Universities in Southeast, Nigeria only) to deliver the project.
- 2. Use the Wikimedia training manual (available at https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/training.) to empower my partners with the skill to communicate their expertise in Wikipedia.
- 4. Share responsibilities with partners
- 5. Establish a method of capturing learning from the project.
- 6. Form a community of participants using the WhatsApp platform.
- 7. Organize a monthly webinar on emerging issues around climate change and Deforestation
- 8. Delegate a participant to track the readership and visits to the published Wikipedia articles to enable review of comments and addition of new content.
- 9. Establish a method of evaluating the project and its outcomes based on our stated criteria on the metrics.
- 10. Mainstream Wikipedia editing into my partners' teaching and learning process.
The above strategies were chosen because the project is partner-based. Strategies such as the ones listed above have been used in partner-based projects and proved successful. Elisabeth von Muench (User: EMSmile) partnered with the project every one to host an SDG edit-at-hon using a related strategy and the project was successful. Wikipedians in Central and Eastern Europe partnered with other lovers of free knowledge in the region to create information on Wikipedia on every country in the region and it was a success.
Moreover, the above strategies were based on teamwork (team decisions). In our Organizer Lab Class, Unit 6.2.1, 1st paragraph, we were told that well-organized campaigns are done by teams not a single person. The passage went further to exclaim that each team member facilitates a different part of the campaign.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
The activities I will develop include
- 1. Organize a brainstorming session with my partners to brainstorm on the process of implementing the project
- 2. Share responsibilities among partners based on their expertise (i.e who does what for the success of the program).
- 3. Design a reporting system through which each person will report back to the group how he/she has been managing the responsibility assigned to him or her.
- 5. Organize three-day training to build up the capacity of the participants from the Institute of Climate Change and Department of Geography and a short training session to refresh the memories of experienced editors.
- 6. Create a list of articles that participants will work on.
- 7. Make the program public by setting up a dashboard
- 8. Assign articles to participants
- 9. Organize a series of online edit-a-thons in English.
- 10. Design an online form through which participants' data and their expectations of the program will be captured at the beginning of the program.
- 11. Design an interview guide through which the key participants' perceptions of the program will be collected at the end.
- 12. Organize Focus Group discussion (FGD) with the participants to capture learning.
The above activities were chosen because they will lead to the expected successful outcome for our project which is to improve or create Wikipedia articles on deforestation in Nigeria, and to produce participants who will be interested in continuous updating of information on deforestation (Climate Change and Sustainability) in Nigerian in Wikimedia. Moreover, the activities will help us to learn and evaluate the project. Related activities to these were used by Wikipedians in the Central and Eastern European countries and User: EMSmile and they proved successful.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
Wikiforhumanrights, Africa Knowledge Initiative, Wiki Loves Africa
