Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Simple Wikipedia Campaign for Climate Change (SWCCC)

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

There are over 4000 articles on climate change on the English Wikipedia and on the Simple Wikipedia. A lot of the climate change-related articles on English Wikipedia use technical and advanced words and a lot of them don’t have Simple Wikipedia versions to make it easier for students, children, adults with learning disabilities, and non-native English speakers to access knowledge about this critical topic.

SWCCC wants to create Simple English Wikipedia versions of existing English Wikipedia articles on Climate Change as well as improve already existing ones so that knowledge on Climate Change will be accessible to everyone no matter their level of English efficiency.

Furthermore, the Simple English Wikipedia needs more enthusiastic editors. Many people don’t even know it exists and of the millions that do, they are left disappointed when they see the content gap caused by a lack of active editors. A wiki launched to make knowledge easy to understand should have more articles than these; especially on Climate Change and everything else. SWCCC will immerse new and existing editors into Simple English Wikipedia and in the long term, they will contribute to other topics on the wiki.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Strategy 1: Bridge contributor gap How?: Recruit and train more climate action enthusiasts on how to contribute to SEWP starting with Climate Change topics.

This will help them understand the potential of the problem at hand and help them understand how to contribute to solving it.

Strategy 2: Bridge the content gap How?: Organize edit-a-thons for participants to create new articles under Climate Change.

We will host content drive styled edit-a-thons where participants are going to learn how to use resources such as Glossary of climate change, the WP 1.0 bot table, Popular Climate Change articles and other materials we will provide them to find which articles are very important but do not have SEWP versions.

This will motivate them to put to work what they have learned and drive up the content available on Climate Change on SEWP.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Strategy 1: Bridge contributor gap Activities:

  • Organize in-person 2day training in Lagos where participants will:
  • Learn about Climate Change and SEWP
  • Know how SEWP works
  • Improve Climate Change topics on SEWP
  • Create articles related to Climate Change on SEWP

Strategy 2: Bridge the content gap Activity: Host a centralized edit-a-thon after the training where participants have had hands-on experience on why and how to contribute Climate change-related articles to SEWP.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

She is focused on making science knowlege more understandable by non sceintific audiences and believes advancements in science are futile if they cannot be applied in practice or related to the public. She also has experience as a Science Writer at Massive Science.

Name: Olaitan Owoyemi Role: Science Communication Professional Intro: Olaitan Owoyemi has organized science outreaches to market women and students in the past and has a proven record with working on courses for kids. He has experience as a Creative Writer working on science topics for Afrilearn and as an Editorial Board Member for Traditional Medicine Research. Role:

Name: Improv Role: Resource person Intro: Improv is an admin on the SEWP who loves patrolling new pages for any errors and create new articles in various different areas of interest. He has created 482 articles and made 28000+ edits on Simple English Wikipedia.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Age (regency), Language, Other global topics for impact (topics considered to be of global importance)

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

As explained in the first paragraph of the proposal, there are thousands of Climate Change articles on English Wikipedia which are not easily comprehensible for kids, people with learning disabilities and people who just want to get a basic understanding of what the topic entails. This makes knowledge somewhat complex for a key group of people on which the sustainability goals of our planet depends on. SWCCC wants to teach relevant stakeholders how to simplify Climate Change articles.

7. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Not applicable

8. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

- Climate change enthusiasts

9. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

1. Add WMF Friendly Space Policy and the Universal Code of Conduct to the success message participants get after registration.

2. In any case of harassment, we will:

I. communicate the offense to the offensive party and ask them to apologize if possible II. apologize to the offended party III. make an open emphasis on the Friendly Space Policy in order for such an offense not to report itself.

3. Escalate the offense to higher authorities or ban the offensive party as the case may deem
10. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

No affliate/groups knows about this project yet other than conversations that have began with partners listed in the table before the learning and evaluation section. But I carefully examined the project pages of WikiProject Climate change, the article on Simple English Wikipedia, and WikiProject Editor Retention while planning this proposal to get some of my thoughts together.

We will be working with the Wikimedia editors based in Lagos who are also part of several Wikipedia communities though this project targets an entirely fresh autience.

11. Are you aware of other Organiser Lab proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

Yes

If yes:

11.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
No
11.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
The reason why I had not developed a joint proposal is that this is the only project that focuses on the Simple English Wikipedia and it has enough depth to cover and explore. Adding another project expands the scope and decreases the impact/ effectiveness.

I don’t see us duplicating any proposals because our proposals are distinct.

12. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

Yes

12.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

Who they are What they want What we offer What they’ll give

Who? Local units of Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales (AISEC), Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and other climate action youth groups,

What they want: SDGs met, Volunteers engaged What we offer: SWCCC cuts through SDG 4, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, and 15 What they’ll give: Mobilization of advocates

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation[edit]

13. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

How easy will it be for participants, both experienced onwiki and new, to create and improve the content on c/c on SEWP with what they learned?

Met: Participant observation where participants are observed as they work on c/c SEWP pages, taking note of their challenges, and analyzing their interactions. This method can be backed with in-depth interviews and feedback to understand the participants' experiences.

How can we effectively recruit and retain editors for SEWP?

Met: Semi-structured interviews with current SEWP editors to identify their motivations and barriers.

How do we engage c/c communities and enthusiasts to contribute to SEWP topics on c/c?

Met: Survey with members of c/c communities and enthusiasts. The result can be used to develop targeted outreach strategies and messaging.

How do we convince experienced Wikipedians from ENWP to become SEWP enthusiasts?

Met: Semi-structured interviews or focus group discussions with Wikipedians inactive on SEWP to learn why.
