Wiki-Green Conference 2023

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The WIKI-GREEN Conference is an annual event that provides a platform for discourse on the detrimental effects of Climate Change and pollution on the rights and freedoms of Ghanaians. Additionally, the conference explores the potential of utilizing open projects such as Wikimedia projects to raise awareness and identify potential solutions to these pressing issues. The conference serves as an important forum for academics, researchers, and practitioners to deliberate on these critical issues and share knowledge and insights.

This year's WIKI-GREEN Conference will focus on the theme "Involve to Evolve: The New Climate Paradigm." Building on discussions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change in previous editions, the conference will now also address loss and damage resulting from inevitable or avoidable climate change impacts. The conference will be held in two locations, Accra for southern Ghana and Tamale for northern Ghana.

The two-day event in Accra will cover a range of topics related to the impact of climate Change. The first day will include discussion on Climate Change, its impact, and solutions. The second day will focus on a workshop with hands-on experience in editing and contributing to Wikimedia projects. Participants will also discuss strategies for promoting Wikimedia and engaging new contributors. The event in Tamale will focus on the Loss and damage and how the Wikimedia project can be used to communicate about it. It will be followed by a tree planting exercise the next day.

The event is a valuable opportunity for anyone interested in the Climate and Wikimedia space to connect with others, learn new skills, and contribute to the platform's growth.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Building strategic partnerships with Wikimedia User Groups, Institutions, and like-minded organizations will be a fundamental aspect of our strategy. These connections are evident in the broad scope of the project, which was developed through extensive consultation. This approach will enable us to broaden our reach and engage individuals who possess both expertise in Climate discourse and experience with open projects.

We will prioritize community engagement by working closely with identified groups of people in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the event. Included are the traditional leaders and community members of the area where the tree-planting exercise will occur, This ensures sustainable outcomes and community buy-in.

The event being part of the WikiForHumanRight Campaign by the WMF, we will leverage the expertise of the partners to identify key topics that align with the campaign's objectives. we will also utilizing the tactics of list building and tools to strategically create list of articles that can be edited by participants, thus contributing to the campaign's goal.

Building the capacity of participants: New editors will be trained on how to effectvely edit and utilize Wikimedia projects to amplify the cause of their work within the climate and sustainability area. Experienced Wikipedians will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of climate issues and the technicalities in communicating about it. This approach aims to empower participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the Campaign and address the adverse effects of climate change.

Effective communication: We will keep all partners informed at every stage of the project. In addition, we will use our networks, social media platforms, and Wikimedia mailing lists to promote the event and attract the target audience. These will ensure that all stakeholders are kept informed and engaged throughout the planning and implementation of the event.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Keynote address And Panel Discussions : Distinguished experts with extensive knowledge on the event's theme of "Involve to Evolve: The New Climate Paradigm." will deliver speeches that are pertinent to the topic. In addition, a panel discussion will take place, comprising individuals from the target group and partnering organizations. The panelists will include women, youth, and persons with disabilities. They will engage in a conversation that covers various topics, such as the causes and impacts of loss and damage, climate change and its impact on gender, climate and health, the role of stakeholders in responding to the impacts of climate change, and policies and approaches for addressing loss and damage in Ghana.

Workshop and Contest: We will collaborate with our local partners to arrange a workshop on Wikimedia, featuring various sessions such as an introduction to Wikimedia projects, open licensing, using Wikimedia as a communication tool, utilizing Wikipedia for research, and localizing Wikimedia projects. Participants will learn more about the platform's features and functionalities, and gain hands-on experience with editing and contributing to Wikimedia projects. They could also explore ways to promote Wikimedia in their own communities for research, and discuss strategies for engaging new contributors and fostering collaboration. Following the workshop, participants will engage in an edit-a-thon and edit contest on articles list builded based on the keynote addressed and panel discussions. This is to reinforce their newly acquired skills.

Tree planting exercise:Moving from talks to implementation, a tree-planting exercise will be held during the event. June's rainy season offers an ideal time to plant trees, and the exercise will coincide with Green Ghana Day to extend its impact. The selection of site, pegging, and involvement of local community members in the exercise will be overseen by partner organizations that are already operating in those areas.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Climate change disproportionately affects northern Ghanaians, yet they're underrepresented in discourse & events. An event in the north aims to amplify their voices & raise awareness of how climate change impacts their human rights.

The workshop and edit-a-thon endeavors to address the lack of comprehensiveness in climate-related content on the emerging Ghanaian language Wikipedia by creating new articles and translating existing ones from the English Wikipedia.

Gender Identity, Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language, Age

8. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The majority of the events will involve participation from our partnering organizations, which include:

1.Young Climate and Environmental Organization
2. Academia
3. The Ghanaian Wikimedian Community
4. Indigenous Groups
5. Women Groups
6. Persons with Disabilities

We will create a WhatsApp group page for participants, where they can access training opportunities and events related to the open and climate space.

To monitor participants editing, we will require all attendees to register using the WMF events registration tool.

The involvement and partnership of the Wikimedian communities in Ghana will play a vital role in integrating new participants into these communities. The communities will provide the necessary support and activities that will sustain their interest in the movement. Many of these organizations host climate-themed events throughout the year, providing opportunities for ongoing engagement and involvement.

After the event, a Twitter space will be organized to interview and engage with participants. Additionally, the learning outcomes, including quotes, video snippets and contest winners will be shared on the event's social media handles.

To further disseminate the outcomes of the event, a blog post will be published on Diff and Medium. We also aim to document the event's outcomes and present them at other conferences related to technology and climate.

Furthermore, video coverage of the event will be available on Wikimedia Commons, and partnering organizations will share the video on their respective YouTube channels.

Our Media Partners will cover the event and its outcome and publish it on their various platforms.

The organizers and partners will continue to take care of the trees even after the event. Regular site visits will be documented on Wikimedia Commons with pictures as evidence. Participants will also be involved in caring for and watering the seedlings, and will be encouraged to share photos of their visits on Wikimedia Commons.

Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

We will create promotional flyers and advertise them on various social media platforms to attract attention to the event.
