Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Wiki Climate Africa

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Wiki Climate Africa is an international Writing campaign that is currently underway in Tanzania and aims to record and publish articles on environmental issues and climate change. The Swahili Wikipedia has been active for many years, but we have noticed a huge gap in writing Climate-related content on the Swahili Wikipedia. Out of the eight members who have contributed to climate articles,

1. One only wrote about the environment, statistics show that out of 250 articles, I tried to generate using the List Building tool, not one is on the Swahili Wikipedia. The aim of the campaign is:

Goals

Goal 1:Close the gap of Climate content in the Swahili language

Goal 2: help to advance a healthy environment in Tanzania

Goal 3: Recruit new volunteers who are enthusiasts and conservationists in climate issues

Goal 4: Increase quality content coverage

Therefore this project will help increase the content on Swahili Wikipedia related to Climate change and sustainability topic and bridge the language gap, this will help give awareness to Swahili readers about Climate change through their own native language, and as a result, Swahili readers will be aware of various effects caused by climate changes and what to do to address climate risks.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Strategies:

Goal 1: There are over 4000 articles on climate change on the English Wikipedia. A lot of the climate change-related articles on English Wikipedia use technical and advanced words and most of them do not exist in the Swahili language. We will organize several workshops(online/in-personal) to teach people how to write these environmental articles, especially those involved in environmental issues. The language gap is the main problem we want to solve by organizing this Wiki climate Afrika 2022 in Tanzania which will be contested. This will help create a public understanding of what is going on about climate right now.

Goal 2 Also, another goal is to help advance a healthy environment in Tanzania by training Wikipedia Volunteers on issues relating to Climate Change. This theme relates to the WikiForHumanRight campaign as well.

Goal 3: The main strategy for achieving this project is to Build and empower a community of contributors to contribute climate change knowledge on Swahili Wikipedia so they can be better positioned to contribute Climate Change and other environmental information on Wikipedia. We believe this will give opportunity for environmental experts and other environmental enthusiasts to improve local expert (environmental) knowledge in Wikipedia Also, We will be organizing a meet-up and training edit-a-thon in all Wikimedia communities in Tanzania to announce the theme and retrain the participants on the areas we realized they need more coaching and support.

Goal 4: Organizing Workshops that focus on widening the coverage of quality and underrepresented content in Swahili to attract readership, by adding images to articles with no images and improving them. Also, we will have Photowalk where we will take pictures relating to climate change. This theme relates to Wiki Love Africa 2023 campaign.

Collaborating with other organizations in order to get access to underrepresented knowledge resources.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Activities

The in-person training event, This will be a series of events for training to ensure that new contributors get enough understanding about the Wikimedia movement and their sister's projects, how to use Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia commons ect, for example how to open a Wikipedia account, how to interact with the interface and make small edits such as how to add references, citation, etc

Edit-a-thon, We will organize a series of events of edit-a-thon after new users get an understanding of the Wikimedia movement and their sister's projects as well as experienced editors and also how to use Wikipedia effectively so that they can able to make small edits such as adding references, citations, etc to the existing articles about climate change and sustainability topic on Swahili Wikipedia.

Write-a-thon, We are planning to organize events by including experienced editors in writing articles about climate change and sustainability topics on Swahili Wikipedia. This will help to create many impactful articles about climate change and sustainability topics on Swahili Wikipedia.

Photowalks: We are also planning to organize photowalk events by involving experienced and new photographers to take and document images and short videos regarding the topic of climate change and sustainability topics on Wikimedia commons.

Data-a-thon, also we will engage in Wikidata projects to add and documents all written articles from Swahili Wikipedia during the Wiki climate Africa campaign.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Also since the majority of the target participants will be new editors, efforts will be made to link them to existing Wikimedia communities in Tanzania, so they can be better exposed to Wikimedia activities and also participate in other events in the community.
