Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Wiki for the sustainable climate in Burundi

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The proposal is important as it aims to awaken and educate Burundians to safeguard the climate environment in order to guarantee good conditions for a sanitary environment. My community will benefit from the right information on what to do in order to address the climate change and know how to do it correctly.

Burundi has experienced problems related to climate change. We have observed, facts such as changes in annual precipitations, in seasonal precipitation patterns, and in annual air temperatures. In 2018, it has been launched a campaign "Ewe Burundi Urambaye", consisting in planting trees throughout the Burundian territory in order to reforest and give an image of good air to the country. Initiatives such as reforestation, environmental protection, cannot make an impact if the audience is not aware of it and is not educated in this way.

Consequences resulting from human behavior and activities such as deforestation, bush fires, floods during heavy rains have been the causes of damage, often enormous, humans and livestock diseases, loss of human life, loss of movable and immovable materials, degradation of arable land. Climate change poses a very serious threat to Burundi, hence the need to address the cumulative risks arising from the worsening effects of climate change, such as the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and natural disasters, the rising lake water levels, floods, heat waves, droughts, desertification, water shortages.

In Burundi, the water and soil resources, essential for the economic and social development of the country, are today subject to strong pressures linked to the growth of the population, the overexploitation of the land and the growing demand for natural resources. Climate change and increasing climate variability add to these trends and further degrade the availability and quality of water and arable land.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

In order to achieve the changes we want within this proposal, the main approaches we plan to focus on will be:

Recruitment: We will need participants in our project, and to have them we will resort to recruiting participants through notices and project publication. We will then invite actual and new editors, academicians and non-academicians to participate in our project.

Partnership: We will establish collaborations with stakeholders in the domain of Climate change and sustainability, academicians in the domain of Climate change and sustainability, the aim being to associate knowledge and efforts for the realization of our project.

Communication and awareness: We will need to publicize our project to the targeted audience. This will require us to use communication channels to inform the project to our audience, postings on communication boards at selected universities.

Training and capacity building: To provide participants with knowledge related to Climate change and sustainability, we will organize training sessions for participants. We will then organize training sessions and editathons to skill our participants with knowledge on how they will contribute to the project.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

As part of the approaches and / or strategies related to our project, and in order to make our project known to the audience of the project, we plan to establish information releases through various media and communication channels for awareness and sensitization.

We are going to set up a registration tool to allow interested parties to register to participate in our project. We will then invite people to participate in the project while considering gender, geographic and religious inclusion. The goal of inclusion is to promote the participatory approach of the different layers of our audience so that they feel involved and benefit from the project. When recruiting participants for our project, we will think of academicians in the field of Climate change and sustainability who are more interested in subjects related to their field of academic training. We will also think of media professionals who will help us relay information; photography professionals to contribute with images related to our topic. The activities will be implemented by a group of people who will share tasks according to experiences and functions to meet the demands of our project. We will establish partnerships with stakeholders in the field of Climate change and sustainability through exchange contacts and correspondence to talk about our project, the contributions and interests that the project will bring to the Burundian community. We will organize training sessions to participants registered to partake in our project in order to share with the participants the skills in the field of Climate change and sustainability, trainings related to climate change and sustainability, training on the contribution on Wikimedia pages, mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, show our participants how to contribute to our project. The training sessions will be both in person and online. We also plan mentoring sessions to support our participants to adress possible issues within their editings.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Before and during the activities, we will engage the participants through the communication, organization of meetings, training and mentoring sessions and social media groups to keep in touch with participants as for interacting whenever needed. In order to follow up with the participants after the activities, we will create a communication channel with the participants in order to keep contact with them. We hope to create a Facebook channel to advertise about our project implementation in Burundi, a telegram and/or a WhatsApp group for our internal communications. During the project implementation, online meetings (zoom) will be organized and invites will be shared through our internal communication channels for mentors to the participating contributors, responding to answers and resolving issues participant may have.
