11. What is the challenge or problem you are addressing and why is this important?
- Recently, the British Medical Journal published a systematic review on the association between suicide reporting in the media with a shocking conclusion that reporting of deaths of celebrities by suicide increases the number of suicides by 8-18% in the next 1-2 months, and information on the method of suicide was associated with an increase of 18-44% in the risk of suicide by the same method. Press release by Bristol University adds that people can now read a news story about what was the method of suicide, and then learn how to use that method from sites such as Wikipedia.
- The above mentioned is only one such example, it is highly troublesome that the media plays such a strong role in aggravating the mental health of a person. This is largely because information reported on mental health care on social media is inadequate and often misleading. Similarly, there is also high usage of insensitive terminologies, making readers feel negatively about themselves and other groups. Most importantly, due to the stigma associated with mental healthcare, easily accessible and scientific content related to mental health care isn’t available in regional languages in the media.
- The substantive issues that can be identified are as follows-
- Published information and reporting on mental health can be misleading,
- Pejorative or otherwise problematic terminology used around mental health topics marginalizes and harms some underrepresented communities.
- Accessibility to mental healthcare info in the media is often limited to English, causing a lack of access for other language communities.
- To address the above problem, Margika, a network for training and capacity building will collaborate with mental health care organizations for data acquisition. It is a known fact that Wikipedia is the most consulted source of knowledge, and hence the knowledge of Wikipedia needs to be constantly updated. On the other hand, many reputed mental health organizations are good sources of knowledge but are a recipient to a small number of audiences. Along with Wikimedia communities, we will adopt and translate the content in regional languages, enabling individuals to publish authentic, verified and sensitized information regarding mental health care on Wikipedia.
- One of the biggest challenges identified by us in this process is the copyrighted healthcare content of various mental healthcare organizations, and thus it becomes difficult to use that information on any of the Wikimedia platforms. Margika with the help of Wikimedia communities will educate various mental healthcare organizations to share their content under suitable CC-BY-SA, which can be used by the wider Wikimedia community.
12. What is the main objective of your proposal? Please state why you think partnering with Wikimedia Movement helps to achieve this objective?
- The main objective of our proposal is that information related to mental healthcare should be easily shared and accessed everywhere around the world. By partnering with the most consulted open-source platforms like Wikimedia, it will help us achieve our objective of creating and distributing accurate and verified content on mental healthcare to the masses.
13. Describe your main strategies to achieve this objective?
- For content acquisition-
- Dedicated workshops will be conducted for mental healthcare organizations to educate them about Wikipedia along with CC-BY-SA licensing. The workshop will encourage partner organizations to share their content on Wikipedia. We have already collaborated with a few mental health organizations that have already shared their content with us. Our experienced and certified trainers from organizations like the University of South Florida’s Center for Autism and Related Disability, Vanderbilt University’s Kennedy Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill have also brought their content with them to Margika. We will identify suitable content as per Wikimedia guidelines, which will be further integrated into various Wiki platforms.
- For Content translation-
- In order to deliver quality health content in regional languages, we would begin by using the existing topic prioritization process established by WikiProject Med's Translation Task Force to select the English Wikipedia medical content which we translate to regional languages. That process seeks to deliver the health information which is most relevant for audiences in emerging communities, to the most people, with the highest quality information which already has gone through Wikipedia's English language quality control process. The translation process includes staging text for stakeholder evaluation, translating it in a way that similarly invites comment, and complying with existing Wikimedia community processes for stakeholder participation. Once content is publicly available and after three months, a typical amount of time to collect Wikipedia user response, we will measure and report the quality of the content and its associated impacts using native Wikipedia measurement tools which report the Wikimedia suite of communication metrics, including pageviews, editor engagement, and any user comments.
- For Content Publishing-
- This proposal will publish medical information in the regional language Wikipedias. We will adopt existing Wikimedia community processes wherever there is a stakeholder community offering guidance. The workflow will include applying existing community processes to each of the following steps: selecting existing English Wikipedia medical articles for translation, staging that content for localization, executing the translation, publishing the translated content, recruiting stakeholder feedback, measuring the publishing impact, and publishing a program summary to communicate outcomes and credit the contributions of all participants. Each step will invite open public participation and include collaboration from a relevant, representative Wikimedia or community organization.

Our proposal is an international call to individuals, communities, institutions, and grassroots organizations working in the area of mental health care to freely share their content in the public domain. To make our content as inclusive as possible we aim to create a diverse cohort of contributors and stakeholders. We have already collaborated with a few organizations like the University of Florida, the Centre for Autism and related Disability, Florida Family leader’s Network, etc.
- The following is the strategy Margika will implement to retain participants-
- There is a content gap related to mental health care information on Wikimedia platforms. Almost all mental health care organizations' content is copyrighted. We will educate such organizations to share content under suitable CC-BY-SA licenses. It will enable Wikimedia communities to use authentic and verified information on Wikimedia platforms as the content won't be copyrighted anymore. This will increase the outreach of mental healthcare organizations as well. We will pair regional healthcare organizations with local Wikimedia volunteers for sustainability.

- Key community leaders working in WikiProject Medicine and Translation Task Force are informed via e-mail. Local affiliates have assured help to conduct workshops. We have already done preliminary engagement through online engagements and Wikipedia workshops in the past. Margika will be working with AfroCROWD to conduct translation workshops for the African diaspora.

- Margika is a legally registered non-profit organization. There are currently 5 people that constitute the team of Margika who will be directly involved with this project.
- Dr Neena Rao is the CEO of Margika. She has varied and diverse national and international experience in academia, research, training, and implementation in the development field.
- Dr Sushil Puskur is a consulting advisor at Margika.He is a M.D., M.S., FAPA, certified by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry, currently practicing in Ocala, Florida.
- Suyodh Rao works as a strategist at Margika, he has an MS in Information Technology, Regis University, Denver, Colorado, USA and a Masters in Economics from the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune.
- Pam Kissoondyal works in the capacity of a consultant at Margika. She has received training in the INSITE, SKI-HI and VIISA models and is a Florida Partners and Policy Making Graduate.

- Margika has been working dedicatedly in the field of mental health care, addressing the need of creating awareness, fighting stigma, and providing advanced knowledge, and best practices from the world over.
- Margika has a very clear vision for new learnings and sustainability. Before we start our project we plan to conduct a few pilot workshops to test our assumptions. This being said, we hope to learn the following from this proposal-
- Content Acquisition-Helping mental healthcare organizations to share content under suitable CC-BY-SA license.
- Translation of the acquired content- Translation of mental healthcare content in regional languages and Increasing the awareness of mental healthcare at the grassroots level.
- Publishing of the acquired content- the acquired content will be published on the Wikimedia platforms
