1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Vietnam Wikimedians User Group was formed in 2018 after the ESEAP conference in Bali, Indonesia. After that, the group grew gradually to 25 members. However, after the two founders retired, the group was not working for a long time and also faced the nonchalant of the youngsters in Wikimedia projects. In 2022, the group enrolled two new members in the Board of Committees and determine plans to improve the user group.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

With a population of 100 million, the need of accessing free knowledge is very large in Vietnam. Therefore, our user group wants to attract more newcomers to come and contribute knowledge to Wikimedia projects.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

In this proposal, we will run campaigns (advertisement, hashtag, Wikipedia experiences, etc) on social media to get attention from the public and potential editors in the future. We know that social media networks contain millions of users, so they are a proper place to run our campaigns and gain more public interest.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We have 2 main activities:

  • Run advertisements on our group Facebook to attract new users.
  • Run story tellings about Wikimedia projects' experiences and label related hashtags. The participants are asked to write at least 150 words about what they know about or their experiences with Wikimedia projects and send their content to our email.

As per our proposal abstract, our main strategy is to attract newcomers through social platforms.

We collect user story tellings through our email group to guarantee the user's safety and user privacy. We allow senders to use anonymous emails (by name) and pay them money through mobile phone cards or digital coins. We comply to UCOC and remove all comments or participants who break UCOC.
