Mt Kenya Region is the only region with 5 different chartered university, the talent pool in the region is immense, Mt Kenya innovation week was born from the MT Kenya hub innovation challenges and hackathons as an event meant to tackle the regional challenges through technology as well as offering the community a chance to learn more emerging technologies as we planned to bridge the gap between the university research and solutions with the immediate communities. We have held so far 2 innovations weeks. Last year we had over 1000 participants with over 50% being women in tech and women in business, we accelerate the top 20 for 6 months

13. What are the main objectives of the event?

During the whole week event we intend to train community leaders on access to government opportunities, Basic Book keeping and product branding, for the students we intend to equip them with employable digital skills like website design, graphic designs and access to digital jobs

the top 2 goals from the survey still remained the same as strategic input and capacity development, however community building came head of working groups.

After holding the week long innovation week, we plan to undertake a 6 month incubation program where we shall not only onboard innovators but also equip community trainer of trainers on various local content development, we have also developed an online free knowledge centre with various content provided

As much as we are targeting innovators, the event also has a community engagement session where we intend to train the community members on various digital skills. We intend to make sure more community members have better understanding of WIKIMEDIA Projects and how they can use them to promote their brands and businesses

19. What will you do to make sure participants continue to engage in your activities after the event?

We have a structured a 1 year plan which starts with a 6 months incubation program for the top 15 selected innovators as well as another 6 months acceleration program where we intend to scale up these community innovations. Additionally we intend to start a research program for on various issues facing the region and mainly on affordable agri-food and climate smart solutions and develop content in regards to the same.

Logistical Aspects[edit]

21. Do you have any proposed venue for the event?

In the previous 2 events, we held one in one of the regional university, the second one we held it in a hotel but this event will be held In out new Mt Kenya Hub Centre. The centre is 1km from Town centre, 150km from airport and capital city. 500 meters from the hotel. The only challenge would be if it rains during the event since the event will be held outdoors in the Mt Kenya Hub gardens to symbolize a Green event.

We intend to accelerate the top 15 innovators for 6 months,

24. What expenses will the scholarship cover?

We intend to accelerate the top 15 innovators for 6 months, however as per the last events, we want to sponsor the top 5 innovations and provide them with basic equipment to move their innovations into commercialization.

25. How will scholarship recipients be selected?

We have an internal system with a 3 level judging criteria, for people who shall submit their innovations online, their innovations shall be placed on first level of judgement and top 40 will be shortlisted, they will be given a chance to review judges’ comments and amend their pitched and shall be placed on the second level judgment where the top 10 shall be invited for a physical judging. For hackathon competitors shall be judged on the first level and top 15 innovations shall be selected to undergo the 48 hrs. Hackathon development phase then they shall be subjected to the final judgement. The 25 innovations shall produce the top 5 innovations

we plan to target innovators on the selected thematic areas which include, smart agriculture, climate smart, Women in Tech and PWDs

We would appreciate various support from Wikimedia foundation which includes and not limited to;

  • Facilitate some sessions on Digital privacy and cybersecurity
  • Be part of the hackathon experts and or mentors during the 48 hr event
  • Be part of a round table discussion panel on online policy

The organizing team play a huge role in making the event a success. The team will write a call for innovation, Organize logistics for innovators, sponsors and guests, Organize foe food and refreshments during the hackathon, liaise with judges and mentors during the session as well as do a follow-up with the innovators during and after the event.

Wikimedia expertise and groups would be of great help in moderation various sessions as well as linking some of our innovators with industry mentors. Mt Kenya Team shall coordinate the hackathon and Wikimedia Communities, groups and affiliates shall run the panel discussion and guest speakers

Skill gaps in project leadership team – Most innovators lack financial modeling skills for their innovations – We intend to run financial literacy and modeling sessions during the event Skills Gap- Art of pitching – Many entrepreneurs and innovators lack pitching skills- we shall offer these trainings Fundraising and certifications filing like patent and copyrights – we intend to look for an expert to talk about fundraising skills and pointer. We would be happy if Wikipedia Foundation can help in this sector
