Proposal[edit]

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Rhizome has been the home of digital art since 1996. Founded by artist Mark Tribe, the organization began as an informal online community that included some of the first artists who created art for the web. Today, Rhizome is a non-profit that has played an integral role in the past, present, and future of contemporary art engaged with digital technologies and the internet, and its recorded and social memory.

In 1999, Rhizome established the ArtBase, an archive of digital art that has served as a resource for online and offline exhibitions, scholarship, and artistic inspiration. Rhizome develops archival approaches that are effective on the infrastructure level, with the intention to support not only Rhizome’s ArtBase, but a broader network of care—digital archives everywhere, for everyone.

In 2021 Rhizome made its ArtBase archive available to the public as an LOD repository. Rhizome made a groundbreaking adaptation of Wikibase, the open source framework for LOD that also powers Wikidata, to allow it to suit this purpose. In the process of developing this, Rhizome began to lead a field-wide conversation about Wikibase in the GLAM sector, coordinating the Wikibase Stakeholder Group (WBSG), which commissions production & maintenance of open source extensions to Wikibase.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Rhizome sees tremendous potential in the use of Wikibase to support a decentralized LOD ecosystem. For a wide range of reasons, knowledge stewardship in diverse human cultures cannot follow a one-size fits all approach, and the Rhizome ArtBase is a working example of how Wikibase can support a specialized but still linked and open dataset.

While Artbase functions as a proof-of-concept for this approach, key issues have emerged relating to frontend display: showing relationships among items, handling sensitive information such as content warnings, and optimizing usability for diverse audiences. For example, we want to offer content warnings and accessibility information about Wikibase entries, but we do not want this included in our linked data set.

Rhizome is using Wikibase to present ArtBase online. All Wikimedia software, including Wikibase, is designed to make all data available for public inspection. It doesn’t have any capability to merge private and public data sources.

Rhizome believes that this upgrade and control solution will be useful for other institutions and communities who need to manage and control sensitive information and offer LOD in a user-friendly format.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

To address the technical issue described above, Rhizome plans to integrate snowman, a SPARQL-driven site generator developed by Albin Larsson, into ArtBase's frontend, and to communicate about this as a way of encouraging other organizations to adopt Wikibase. This upgrade project also involves commissioning new features for Snowman.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

5. Do you want to apply for multi-year funding?

No
