8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

In 2024, the Wikimedia Community Kilimanjaro will be based on diverse programs and strategies. Our initiatives will encompass Environmental issues through Wiki for human rights. Also, we will deal with cultural privatization through feminism and folklore, and wiki loves Africa. In education and capacity building, we will be focusing on the Let's Connect peer learning program. Our approaches and strategies are aimed at promoting open knowledge, fostering inclusive learning communities, and supporting the Wikimedia 2030 strategy for global impact. Here's a clear breakdown of these aspects:

Programs:

  • Monthly in-personal Edithathon.
  • Let’s Connect Peer Learning Program in Tanzania.
  • Wikimedia Contest and Campaigns(Wiki Loves Africa. and Feminism and Folklore.)
  • Community Gathering.

Challenges and Strategies:

Strategy 1: Community Content Creation and Improvement

Challenge: Scarcity of Swahili Content - There's a noticeable lack of information available on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms in Swahili, a widely spoken language in Tanzania. To address this, we will organize collaborative events with experienced editors and certified trainers from the Wikimedia community in Arusha. Through this collaboration, we aim to foster greater engagement and learning among our community members. By the end of the grant period, we expect to see an increase in active contributors from the Wikimedia community in Kilimanjaro.

Program Approach: Monthly In-Person Edit-a-thons - These sessions will resemble workshops focused on generating content on less-covered topics in Swahili. They will bring Wikimedians together to:

Collaborate: Working as a team on articles and media uploads.
Share Knowledge: Experts and enthusiasts share insights on specific topics.
Create New & Improved Content: Emphasizing the creation of new Swahili content and enhancing existing entries.

Strategy 2: Empowered Learning Ecosystem for Tanzanian Wikimedians

  • Challenge: Limited Digital Skills - Many potential Wikimedians may lack the technical expertise needed to edit on Wikipedia and other platforms. Our program aims to cultivate a cultural environment where every member of the Wikimedia movement in Tanzania can freely share or acquire knowledge from other Wikimedians across Tanzania and globally. We envision a scenario where individuals can enhance their leadership, organizational, event preparation, and Wikimedia contribution skills. This will be achieved through collaborations with community leaders in Tanzania, as well as experienced individuals from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana, and beyond.
  • Program Approach: Let’s Connect Peer Learning Program in Tanzania - This initiative will foster a supportive environment for learning through:
Online Learning Clinics: Providing introductory and advanced editing skills for Wikimedia projects.
Peer-to-peer Mentorship: Experienced editors guiding newcomers in their editing journey.
Knowledge Exchange and Skill Development: Strengthening the community collectively through mutual learning.

Strategy 3: Increase Engagement - Addressing the Gender Gap

Challenge: Gender Disparity in Participation - Presently, there's an unequal representation of male and female editors contributing to Wikimedia projects. The vision of the Wikimedia community in Kilimanjaro is to bridge this gender gap by offering more training opportunities to women to contribute to Wikimedia projects. Our goal, within three years of implementing our strategies, is to have 40% female participation in Wikimedia projects.

  • Program Approach: Leveraging Wikimedia Contests and Campaigns - We will focus on existing initiatives such as Wiki for Human Rights, Wiki Loves Africa, and Feminism and Folklore, with specific emphasis on:
Targeted Outreach: Engaging women's organizations and potential female editors to increase awareness and encourage participation.
Tailored Workshops: Providing workshops that cater to the specific needs and interests of women editors.
Showcasing Diverse Content: Highlighting contributions from women editors and content related to women's issues to foster a more inclusive environment.

Strategy 4: Community Unity and Knowledge Exchange

Challenge: Fragmented Community and Limited Networking Opportunities - The Tanzanian Wikimedian community may be geographically dispersed, which could impede collaboration and knowledge sharing. Additionally, within the community, participants will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and collectively make decisions to ensure the smooth functioning of the community.

Program Approach: Community Gatherings - These gatherings will serve as vital platforms for: Connection and Networking: Participants connect, share experiences, and build relationships with fellow Wikipedians.

Strategic Planning and Discussion: Facilitating discussions on the community's strategic direction, addressing challenges, and brainstorming solutions collaboratively.
Grant Proposal Development: Collaboratively developing strong grant applications for the annual Wikimedia general grant, ensuring alignment with community priorities.

Celebrating Achievements: Recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of community members and projects that have enriched the Wikimedia landscape throughout the year.

Global Wikimedia Event Participation: Actively engaging in global Wikimedia events like Wikimania, Wiki Indaba, and Wikimedia Summit. We aim to send at least two active community members annually to one of these events, promoting representation and facilitating knowledge exchange.
