1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?
Information Technologies allows every internet user joining digital knowledge and content production. Our organization works to support internet users in using this opportunity. We would like to support internet users in sharing their knowledge on the internet and the proliferation of quality content freely accessible by everyone. We believe that such voluntary contributions of internet users would turn into personal and social wealth.
2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?
Considering the number of universities and students as well as the vibrant civil society in Turkey, we believe there is a big human potential in Turkey that would bring their volunteer work for sharing knowledge and skills, and fight against misinformation. However this big potential is not being utilized in Wikimedia projects; as the society is unaware of the functioning of the Wikimedia projects and how they could contribute. We are planning year-round activities to overcome the problem of unawareness. We would especially like to try to reach education institutions in earthquake-hit areas. Secondly, we would like to support current contributors of the projects by increasing cooperation and connection between them. We believe contributors could inspire and encourage each other in their contributions as long they stay in touch in a friendly atmosphere. Ongoing regular meetings, wiki-parties, and support for student wiki-clubs are planned for creating such an atmosphere. We would like to increase collaboration to help disinformation response efforts related to 2023 elections. We also would like to encourage the local contributors to perceive themselves as a member of the global movement, understand how the movement and its organs work, and become more active in discussions and decision-making. We would like to do so by enabling the community members to meet and work with global wikimedians in regional and global events. Secondly, we would like to support current contributors of the projects by increasing cooperation and connection between them. We believe contributors could inspire and encourage each other in their contributions as long they stay in touch in a friendly atmosphere. Ongoing regular meetings, wiki-parties, support for student wiki-clubs are planned for creating such an atmosphere. 3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
1. Students Edit Wiki Projects Program a. Wiki Assignments are planed in 15 courses at different education institutions throughout the country during the year and reach 400 students with this program. Recent earthquake has affected education very negatively all over the country; the dormitories are closed and almost every university is required to implement distance education. We would like to see if wiki assignments would be a useful activity for those instructors who had to change their course plans and find new online activities related to their courses and further develop wiki assignments together.
b. Wiki Club Activities are activities organized in partnership with student clubs. Last year the first Wikipedia Student club was founded in Istanbul. We plan supporting the activities of the club as we promised and based on those experiences establish a new one in another university.
- 2.Grow the content program
a.Photography contest. We'll organize Wiki Loves Earth as this is a proven way of bringing newcomers to the projects and increasing visibility for the group in the media. b.Article contests. We'll take part in two international article contests (most probably CEE Spring and Turkic Wikimarathon) as a way of encouraging active contributors to contribute in different topics. c.Thematic-edit-a-thons. are organized with civil society partners usually for editing conceptual articles about their field of expertise that would be hard to edit for an ordinary editor. We’'ll organize min. 3 thematic edit-a-thons. This year we plan focusing on improving topics related to active citizenship and transparency as well as the history of the Republic of Turkey as it is the 100th year of the republic. We’ll continue gender-related thematic activities with the partners. Stronger Community Program a. VikiSalı meetings have been held online every two years. This year we plan to make half of the meetings in- person in Istanbul. b. Wiki-parties: We find wiki parties are a good way of bringing current editors together and create some excitement around wiki projects. Therefore we would like to use opportunities like wikipedia birthday, wikidata birthday for organizing fun parties followed by an event where wikipedians share their knowledge and experiences with each other and newcomers. c. Collaboration against disinformation:We’ll support disinformation response efforts related to election related articles.
- 4. Collaboration with Global Movement
a. Participation in global events: Historically the participation of the Turkish community to global Wikimedia events is very low. We are planning to have 3 people sent to Wikimania; 5-6 to the CEE meeting b. Hosting a co-organized event: Based on the success of the 2022 Wikidata event in Istanbul, a new joint event is being planned with Turkic wikimedians. The local community will be encouraged for larger participation in this event and active involvement in the organizational work

8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
Some parts of the proposal include edit-a-thons designed for closing the gender gap by producing content on gender related issues through partnership with gender studies departments of universities and women groups. The prospect partners to work with are Sweden Embassy (Ankara), Women Filmmakers Association (Izmir), Istanbul University gender studies department.

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?
"Grow the Content Program includes thematic edit-a-thons where we try to attract non-wikimedians who would contribute to Wikimedia projects about underrepresented topics in them. Those events are organized in collaboration with partner organizations working in those fields. (Checks and Balances Network), Support Foundation for Civil Society are helping us in reaching organizations. In the “Students Edit Wiki Projects” program is where we reach university youth. Considering that there are more than 200 universities in Turkey, we still have lots of organizations to work with and bring their contributions. We are planning to use wiki-clubs as a way of ensuring the sustainability of the activities in the universities. We use telegram group support and regular VikiSalı meetings as a way of providing support when they need and therefore retaining newcomers.
12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?
Periodic reminders of the existence and importance of the UCoC during the community meetups and in social media conversation. Not allowing on-wiki discussions to be moved to events and community meet up by clearly setting and reminding the agenda.
13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

We connect with other communities in the Wikimedia movement by coordinating local competitions as a part of international editing competitions. Turkic Edit-a-thon organized by Turkic Wikimedians Group, and e CEE Spring contest that the Turkish WP community has participated in every year since 2015 are two examples. We work closely with Turkic Wikimedians groups and co-organize an event in Istanbul with Turkic Wikimedians; we also provide online participation of the hybrid events of this group.
14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.
Our Grow the Content Program involves partnerships with several non-Wikimedian organizations to organize edit-a-thons and trainings. We have partnership talks with those organisations: Swedeen Embassy for a Wiki Gap event at Ankara with participation of university students, Kadir Has University Gender Studies Department and Koc University Gender Studies for Art&Feminism edit-a-thon; Istanbul Paint&Sculpture Museum for an edit-a-thon related to their collection, Marmara University History Teacher Education for student assignments. In those events, partners are expected to biring the audience, provide the space, cover the expenses related to promotion of the event and sometimes the food/snacks.
15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?
We expect thematic edit-a-thons with civil organizations, Wikipedia-editing assignments and partnerships with cultural institutions grow in number largely. We expect the organizations already introduced with Wikimedia projects with this program to soon become self-sufficient about organizing the activities in the program they are involved in and continue similar activities using their internal sources. We especially encourage university students to do so by organizing wiki-clubs in their schools.
16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.
- Our proposal includes both online and in-person events. We are planning to increase the number of in-person events; since we observe that people are becoming fatigued from overuse of video telephony. However, this may not be possible if pandemic conditions do not get better. In this case we'll be having B Plan for making those events as online

19. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?
1. How could we support the activities of a Wikipedia club in a university and model it for other university clubs in the future? Last year the first wikipedia university club was founded in a university at Istanbul. We would like to work closely with this club and learn what sorts of activities would work best for university clubs, see in what points they need support. We want to get feedback from members about their experiences and use the knowledge obtained for establishing similar clubs in other universities.
- 2. What kind of wiki activities would be useful for supporting educational institutions that were unexpectedly stop their face-to-face education and implement distant education because of the earthquake disaster. We would like to report the experiences of the organizers of the wiki activities.
