1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The AfroSounds Project is an African WikiProject which seeks to promote and advance the contribution of free and credible knowledge/content that relates to the Afrobeats Music Industry and related arts, as well as it’s evolution across several African countries, the Caribbean and the diaspora to Wikimedia projects. This project hopes to bridge the huge content gap observed and improve on the systemic bias and also prevent misrepresentation and misinformation, in context to African music, by sourcing true African narratives and standpoints. The AfroSounds Project aims to encourage the collaborative addition of accurate information to a wide variety of musical topics as it concerns the African/Afrobeats community. This project seeks to access and harness resources towards advancing a community that promotes knowledge equity of the underrepresented African community in music. This would be attained by creating articles, citations, media and data around the history and contemporary evolution of Afrobeats, African Music and related arts, to be available and accessible, both online and offline, and in different languages to a global audience.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This project hopes to build the capacity of existing editors within the community and also intimate new volunteer editors on the basics of contributing to Wikipedia and it’s sister projects in context to African/Afrobeats music towards promoting free and genuine information and data of related topics. The project also plans to create a sustainable community of African music editors on the free encyclopedia who are dedicated to providing knowledge equity through resourceful contributions as it concerns the thematic discuss.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

An hybrid training event would be hosted for 2 days towards achieving this goal. Volunteer editors would be trained and taught on the rudiments of contributing to Wikimedia projects as it concerns the area of discuss both physically and virtually. Participants across the continent would be strongly advised to participate in the online/virtual session. A contest would also be held immediately after the training days to facilitate and further promote the objectives of the community through an increased gathering/collection of verified information about several identified topics in the scope of interest. A panel would be selected independently amongst experienced volunteers to manage the winning and selection process.

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Yes, I have the company of two experienced editors with me to facilitate this project as volunteers. They are User:Danidamiobi and User:Prithee P. With experience in hosting and co-organizing various projects and meetups just like Wiki Loves Africa, Wikipedia @20, Art+Feminism, Photo Tour of Urban Green Spaces, and other wiki events, I would be the lead for this project and be responsible for project management, onboarding participants and facilitating a training session. Danidamiobi with a vast experience of contributing to Wikimedia projects, especially having created some notable articles in this targeted space as well, would be a facilitator for training participants as well as Prithee P who is also an experienced contributor with numerous contributions and organizing other wiki projects like SheSaid and Wiki Loves SDGs. Facilitators are a member of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria.

This project poses as a topic of impact as Afrobeats/African music has evolved over the years from historical perspectives to modern contemporary sounds and content. The Afrobeats/African Music community garners international attention and requires credible and free contribution of this knowledge by Africans through the lens and languages of the community, hence preserving and conserving knowledge which will be available for use to the global audience and generations to come.

Target participants would be any African descent who is willing to volunteer and contribute to archiving verified stories, topics, biographies and contents related to African Music on the free encyclopedia for global use. The use of social media would be adopted to make awareness about this project. Existing related communities, groups, organizations and affiliates would also be intimated about the objectives of the project to leverage on their network, ideas and resources. Subsequent meetups would likely hold to sustain the community. Post training survey would also be organized to harvest thoughts of participants as concerning the project and to build a directive of volunteers who have indicated interest in the project for further interactions.

This project would be hosted within and around an inclusive environment which pays cognizance to the friendly space policy to include all humans interested in volunteering for free knowledge and provide support as necessary.
