M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Amar Ekushey Article Contest and TOT 2023

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The contest is one of the signature events of Bangla Wikipedia that is being organized for a long time on a yearly basis. The focus of the proposed contest is improving the quality of the existing articles of Bangla Wikipedia and at the same time recruiting new volunteers with a special focus on reducing the gap of content on women’s participation and contribution. In Bangla Wikipedia, almost 12% of the articles are stub or extremely small. But these articles include some really important and fundamental topics. During the meetups and online discussions, community members have expressed their concern regarding the issue and they agree that a contest can help to minimize this problem.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Previously, the "Amar Ekushey Article Contest 2021" and "Amar Ekushey Article Contest 2022" aimed to increase the number of qualitative articles in Bangla Wikipedia. It got great participation, 220 articles in 2021 and 205 articles in 2022 got improved. Previously, the "Wikipedia Article Contest" targeted creating new articles in Bangla Wikipedia by translating the highly qualitative articles from English Wikipedia. The list is prepared by experienced Wikipedians. This contest became tremendously successful in terms of the number of new qualitative articles and the number of new active editors. The active editor number experienced significant growth in the time of contests (2017 and 2018: February-March, 2019: July-August, 2021: February-March, 2022:February-March). A lot of newcomers join the movement through this contest. This time, the contest will be focusing on improving existing articles instead of creating new ones.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
  • In the past, we did not focus on enhancing the capacity of reviewers. This year we will have a special focus on developing the exuberance of them and make them organized so that the reviewers can be in a phase and dealing with the participant during the contest.
  • We will also concentrate on capacity building for the organizers. Online and offline sessions will take place where they can exchange views and learn from each other as well as from experienced Wikimedians.
  • We will organize a bi-weekly online coordination meeting, which will be open to all. This session will discuss the progress and challenges of the competition. It will also serve as a bridge between the participants and evaluators/organizers.
4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

We have 3 core organizing members, as below. The core team will also take help from the community people and include them as co-organizer.

1. Masum-al-Hasan Rocky (User:RockyMasum) (Organizer, grant processing, answering to the queries, coordinating the reviewers’ team)
2. Ali Haidar Khan (User:Ali Haidar Khan) (Organizer, grant processing, coordinating the organizers)
3. Shabab Mustafa (User:Tarunno) (Organizer, coordinating the reviewers’ team, delivering the prizes)
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

We will have a special focus on the articles on women’s contribution and participation. To reduce the content gap related to women, we will make a special list. The list will focus only the articles related to women so that the participants can contribute to develop the articles.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Bangla Wikipedia content quality improvement.
8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Not applicable

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

Our targeted community is the Bangla Wikipedia Community. Our goal is to mobilize existing contributors and attract new contributors.

We shall announce the news of the contests through press coverage on various online and offline media, social media platforms, mailing lists, emailing the previous participants, banners so that we can ensure participation.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
  • Organizers and reviewers will actively monitor participant activity and support the newcomer as required. A telegram group will be also active to make communication easier for the newbies.
  • We will also ensure the use of all security/safety measures of local authorities and abide by the WMF friendly space policies.
