Ewe language is spoken by an increasing number of over five million people in Ghana. However, the world’s biggest encyclopedia with over 6 million articles written in over 300 languages has fewer number of articles in the Ewe language which implies that there is still a significant gap in knowledge sharing. Apart from this, there is also the problem of many of our Ewe Speaking communities knowing close to nothing when it comes to Wikipedia and its related platforms such as Wikicommons, Wikidata, etc and lack of information regarding how young passionate Ewe speaker, writers and academians can get involved in the information creation and knowledge sharing on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, despite the huge progress made in digitizing unrepresented languages, Ewe language has a limited online presence, with only a few resources available on the internet.

The introduction and training of Wikipedia in Ewe language community will provide a valuable opportunity for knowledge-sharing and preservation of Ewe language and culture. We believe that this project will have a positive impact in Ewe communities and contribute to the diversity of content on Wikipedia. Overall, the project will also help recruit and train new and old participants, who will be nurtured into active volunteers and contributors.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. We will adopt the following strategies to achieve effective results:

Awareness Creation: Flyers and posters will be shared to Ewe Forums via the various social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. as part of the awareness creation.

Training and workshops: To ensure that members of the Ewe Wikimedia Community are equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to the Wikipedia, we will organise training and workshops in the first and last weeks of each month to keep participants and community members active. There will be virtual and in-person workshops which will focus on how to create and edit Wikipedia articles and how to cite reliable sources.

Collaboration and partnerships: We will collaborate with organisations that share the same interests and goals as the Ewe Wikimedia Community and all native or local Wikipedia communities to help with technical resources.

Translation efforts: We will also encourage Ewe community members to translate articles from other languages into Ewe to increase the representation of the Ewe language and culture on Wikipedia and also create new articles.

The following activities will be developed and delivered as part of the project: Organise (2) time in-person (1st and last week of the month and one (1) time virtual workshops on creating, improving, and translating articles to Ewe wikipedia on the Ewe Wikimedia develop online tutorials and resources to support participants in creating and editing Ewe Wikipedia, establish a mentorship program to provide ongoing support to participants and host edit-a-thon to encourage participants to contribute to the Ewe Wikipedia.
