We are helping to create a community of editors (and practice) at Montana State University that focuses specifically on empowering BIPOC, female identifying, and LGBTQ+ students and faculty (and supports) at MSU to edit Wikipedia and edit and create entries about topics that are important to them and their community(ies). There has been sporadic engagement with Wikipedia (and Wikidata on campus) and our goal is to help facilitate and support a community of editors across Wikipedia platforms.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We are requesting funds to support travel and accommodation costs associated with a new editor training to be held at Montana State University (MSU). Two experienced Wikipedian program leaders will travel to facilitate this event that is being organized in coordination with MSU library staff. Aside from the event, we will also meet with interested librarians and faculty about using Wikipedia for educational purposes and the DPLA Wikimedia Project.

Background: Montana State University has sporadic engagement in Wikipedia across campus and the Montana State University Library is seeking to unify editing efforts and opportunities and facilitate engagement with all platforms of Wikipedia by students and faculty at MSU.

Jamie Flood met with MSU librarians (Melissa Pomeroy and Doralynn Rossman (recently selected as Dean of the library)) at the Tribal College Librarians Institute in Bozeman in May of 2023. Through this connection, Jamie has been working with Melissa and other librarians to facilitate planning and training at the library that will cumulate in an event on January 24, 2024. Jamie has shared training and tools with MSU librarians around editing, training, setting up events, expectations, setting up a dashboard, etc. They have joined Jamie at events at NAL and the January event will be the first event of this partnership. The focus of the event is to involve students and faculty in Wikipedia, particularly those who support or identify as women, Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), and LGBTQ+ individuals. We are specifically reaching out to the American Indian and LGBTQ+ populations at the university to improve coverage on important, related topics, and to engage students in making Wikipedia more representative and equitable. The editing event will center around topics of health equity and health information access and will feature students talking about issues on campus and resources for accessing information.

  • We will include a link to the project page, as we finish it. We are still confirming the students that will speak during the event.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Jamie Flood is the Senior Wikipedian and Outreach Specialist at the United States Department of Agriculture National Agriculture Library she it the primary person and point of contact for this proposal and main operator - she has been working with Montana State University Library to organize the event, put together the work list, and will conduct the training for the event. Dominic Byrd-McDevitt (User:Dominic) will come as DPLA and data expert to chat more about the DPLA Wikipedia Project, and issues related to rights statements, metadata, and Commons uploads.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target participants are interested faculty, staff, and students. In regards to the student body we are specifically connecting with the American Indian student group, LGBTQ+ pride student group, health sciences club, and other disciplines related to the topic (writers, English students, health science students, nurses, computer science, etc.) We are in touch with the student body, and the Diversity and Inclusion Student Council. We have fliers hung around campus and consistent emails going out, we will be creating a MSU project page for students to sign up on, and will train/assist the related staff with utilizing the project page to reach out to students to invite them to future events. During the event we will be connecting with the students and staff to get ideas for the next event, and will try to go ahead and set up one (or more) future events before we leave.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Read more here.

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

Jamie met with MSU libraries/librarians at the Tribal College Librarian Institute in May 2023. At the event Jamie presented about the library she works for and hosting Wikipedia events and potential topics. From the event, MSU librarian, Melissa Pomeroy met with Jamie during the event, and then followed up to help train for and facilitate this event and starting a editing group on campus (hosted through the library). Through the event we will be developing an on-wiki community and related questions.
