This project's target is to digitize items under four heads which are briefly mentioned below. All are related to Bangla language, literature and culture outside of the state of West Bengal but within India. These documents are not archived properly and are not easy accessible. Some will not be available even in future due to their dire poor condition. So this project has a multi-level significance from different aspects. These documents will also provide huge authentic references in the context of South-Asian socio-cultural perspective and provide citation support to different Wikimedia projects. It also related to under-represented minority community work of Bengali people living outside their native land of West Bengal.

  1. Approximately 10,000 more pages of Behar Herald, which are recently found in the library of Bihar Bengali Association after the previous project completion Project page. The importance of the Behar herald has been stated in details In the Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Dr. Bir/Bihar Bengalee Association GLAM (ID: 21974356)earlier project proposal from last year. Bihar Bengali Association, owner institution of the newspaper has agree to extend the mutual collaboration.
  2. All available issues contains approximately 4000 pages of Karmashala (কর্মশালা), an official Bengali bulletin cum magazine of Bangiya Sahitya Parisad, Shillong, Meghalaya, published since 1991. Bangiya Sahitya Parisad is one of the oldest Bengali association in Meghalaya which started its journey in 1937.
  3. Approximately 5,000 pages of 20 books written by Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee. He is the Ex. Vice-Chancellor of Assam University and has written many remarkable theoretical and analytical essay books in Bengali and English languages. It is his great generosity that he has agreed to relicense his books under Creative Commons license and for digitization and upload to Wikimedia sites for transcription and proofreading.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Step 1. West Bengal Wikimedians User Group has already purchased a scanner last year, which will be used for scanning. A laptop with good configuration will be purchased to support the scanning process as my previous laptop is non-functional. Like the scanner, the laptop will also be an asset maintained by the user group.

Step 2. Official declaration of the copyright relicensing will be taken from appropriate authority/writer. Already they have verbally assured for it.

Step 3. A person competent to digitize and post-process the documents with care will be actively searched, trained to use the scanner as well as to upload the digitized documents to Wikimedia Commons and assigned for the task as WiR. The activities of the WiR will be regularly monitored by the GLAM organization officials and by me. Remunerations will be provided from this grant for the time and effort of the WiR.

Step 4. We need to go and spend some days to Silchar, Meghalaya and Patna for collecting, organizing and digitization from the expense of this grant because the GLAM organizations will not provide any logistical support to us like computer, lodging etc.

Step 5.The digitized documents will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and will be made readily available to be transcribed and proofread by Wikisource volunteers. Eventually, the texts will be used as reference materials for relevant Wikipedia articles and data will be generated on Wikidata.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
  1. Dr. Bir as Proposer/lead
  2. One paid Wikimedian-in-residence (WiR) to be selected later
  3. West Bengal Wikimedians User Group for support
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

We will target the English and Bangla Wikisource communities for transcription and proofreading of the digitized materials over time. Index pages will be created for these materials on Wikisource after being uploaded on Wikimedia Commons and the people who are interested in Bengali scholastic socio-cultural field can take up the work in future. We would also like to stress, our activities are mainly focused on digitization only and the community takeover will happen in due course, most probably after the grant period ends.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

(required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws.
