6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The change we are trying to bring through this project is the preservation and comprehensive documentation of Hausa local knowledge, cultural heritage, and oral histories on Hausa Wikipedia. Currently, many articles related to Hausa people, culture, and language are stubs or have very weak translations, making them difficult to read and understand. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of information about the Hausa people available online in the Hausa language.

Our goal is to document almost everything about the Hausa on Hausa Wikipedia, written in standard, high-quality Hausa language. This will enable Hausa people to find the necessary information about their culture and history in their own language, thus increasing readership on Hausa Wikipedia.

The project will encompass various aspects of Hausa life, including traditions, festivals, religious practices, towns, emirates, museums, and notable individuals such as traditional musicians, authors, emirs, and politicians. Hausa people are known in Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Chad, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. Additionally, we aim to document information about Hausa people living in other African countries like South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Central African Republic and Ethiopia. The project will also document Hausa communities in the diaspora, such as those in Saudi Arabia and other Asian countries, Europe, and Western countries.

To achieve this, we will collaborate with institutions such as the Gidan Dan Hausa Museum and Gidan Makama Museum in Kano. By partnering with these cultural organizations, we will ensure the authenticity and richness of the content we create. The project will involve training community members on how to collect, document, and edit information on Wikipedia. We will organize workshops and field trips to gather data, record oral histories, and capture multimedia content.

By addressing these challenges and implementing our approach, we aim to make Hausa Wikipedia a comprehensive and reliable source of information about the Hausa people, thereby preserving their cultural heritage for future generations and making it accessible to a global audience.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We will organize several key activities to ensure the success of this project:

1. Field Trips: Conduct field trips to gather data, including historical information and photographs, by touring important places in Hausa land. These trips will enable us to collect authentic and detailed content about various aspects of Hausa culture and history.

2. Training Workshops:

  - Organize training workshops to teach Wikipedia editors how to improve the targeted articles. These workshops will cover skills such as data collection, content creation, Wikipedia editing, and proper citation practices.

3 Writing Contest: Host a writing contest where participants will create and improve the target articles. This contest will encourage active participation and contribute to the quantity and quality of articles on Hausa Wikipedia.

Partnerships We will collaborate with cultural institutions like the Gidan Dan Hausa Museum and Gidan Makama Museum in Kano to ensure the authenticity and richness of the information collected. These partnerships will provide access to valuable resources and expertise, enhancing the project's overall impact.

(required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

To get feedback and support for the project, I took several important steps. First, I discussed the idea with the facilitators who will be helping with the project. We talked about what we want to achieve, how to engage participants, and the best ways to carry out the activities.

I also reached out to Gidan Makama Museum and Gidan Dan Hausa Museum to share our plans. Both museums were excited about the project and agreed to collaborate, which will be very helpful for gathering and sharing Hausa cultural information.

Additionally, I spoke with community leaders from the Hausa Wikimedians User Group. Their input was crucial in shaping the project to make sure it aligns with what the community needs and wants.

To involve a wider audience, I posted about the project on the Hausa Wikipedia Discussion page. This allowed other Wikipedians and community members to provide feedback and suggestions.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

From this project, we hope to learn a lot about preserving and sharing the rich heritage of the Hausa community. We want to find out the best ways to collect and document local knowledge, making sure it's accurate and interesting for readers on Hausa Wikipedia.

We'll also learn about the challenges and opportunities of training and motivating a diverse group of people, including women and young people, to contribute to this important work. By working closely with local historians, academics, and community leaders, we aim to see how their expertise can enrich our project.

Another key thing we want to understand is how making more information about Hausa culture available online affects the community. Will it lead to more people reading and engaging with Hausa Wikipedia? We're excited to find out.

Our partnerships with places like Gidan Dan Hausa Museum and Gidan Makama Museum are crucial. We hope to learn how these collaborations can help us create high-quality content that truly reflects Hausa traditions and history.

Lastly, we aim to develop a sustainable model for future projects. This will help us and others replicate our success in different regions and languages, contributing to the global effort to preserve cultural heritage through Wikimedia projects.
