Bonny Kingdom, Rivers, Nigeria has faced many challenges in recent years, including marine life destruction and political and identity crises, which have particularly affected the artistic and cultural sector. These challenges have led to the closure of several cultural organizations, plunging these entities into a precarious situation. In this context, it is crucial to put in place aid and support mechanisms to maintain the vitality of the Bonny cultural sector and to accompany cultural organizations during this period of transition

In these times of crisis, it is crucial to recognize the vital role played by culture in the resilience of societies. The support grant from Wikimedia is committed to supporting Bonny cultural organizations in their restructuring process, and to promoting the Kingdom’s cultural vitality, even under the most complex challenges.

Investing in a knowledge hub about the “Let's Speak Ibani” (LSI) in the Bonny Kingdom in Identifying and engaging who the key players and influencers are in the sectors of cultural and creative engagement in the kingdom, creating a solid connection between the aborigines, indigent professional photographers and its diaspora, which is critical in building and facilitating regaining their lost identities (Ibani language and Fongu Festival) and opportunities restoration of their dying culture

Ibani Language: The Ibani Language is the mother tongue of the Ibani people found in Bonny and Opobo Communities in Rivers State, Nigeria. The language is Endangered (https://www.endangeredlanguages.com/lang/7929)

We proposed to train and equip as many as possible Ibani youths and adults with skills to effectively edit and write on Wikipedia (English, foremost, before commencing the process of securing the Wikimedia Ibani User group) and teach others to use Wikimedia products.

A pilot capacity Building in a similar manner was conducted in June 2024 while the lessons learnt would be adopted to enhance the success rate of this program (pix from the event & dashboard), and this time, effort is on securing a computer laboratory hall of Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, in a bid to enhance peak performance on the participants.

Fongu: Fongu was originally a rest time/ period mostly for the Fishermen of Bonny Kingdom as the rainfall increased during June—September, they used the opportunity to travel to other Bonny villages, come together to share personal and group experiences they had gotten from the Bonny River. Exchange new fishing techniques, and also observe the river and how best to get better catches. With time this metamorphose into a Festival centuries ago as they choose masquerade displays to tell their stories and experiences. During this period in question, we shall be engaging the professional photographers demographic in Bonny to curate their rich cultural heritage through various activities such as traditional masquerades and dances, music performances, and colourful parades as well as Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther’s memorial in the kingdom. This will closely follow up on an uploading session to Wikimedia Common. To share insights about this program in the Bonny Kingdom and further create opportunities for bilateral mutual engagements, positioning the “Let's Speak Ibani” group as a critical partner able to attract Participants and influence professional photographers and other social groups.
