Grant Proposal
[edit]- M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.
FESPACO Wikipedia edit-a-thon powered by AfroCreatives WikiProject for Wikimedians in South-South Nigeria
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Regional
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
The contest will be focused on creating articles for FESPACO event and the countries include Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Namibia, Ghana, Cameroon, etc.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
The AfroCreatives WikiProject is an initiative of The Africa Narrative to support and mobilize creatives and professionals from the African cultural and creative industries, as well as African cultural enthusiasts, to contribute and enhance knowledge on Wikipedia about Africa’s creative economy. FESPACO Wikipedia edit-a-thon powered by AfroCreatives WikiProject for Wikimedians in South-South Nigeria is geared towards engaging African film enthusiasts in contributing to the African Cinema database on the English and French Wikipedia. African cinema is relatively unrepresented on Wikipedia and the present articles do not have enough information for a standard Wikipedia article. This contest which would start with multiple trainings would solve the problem of articles of poor quality being created.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
The main strategy to achieve these changes is to build the capacity of editors (especially community members) for this event. Another strategy is working in tandem with the team at The AfroCreatives WikiProject in creating proper documentation of what is required for a successful edit-a-thon.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
The activities to be developed include:
- 1. An online training session by The AfroCreatives WikiProject 10th and 11th of February 2023. Physical training sessions would be held in the city of Port Harcourt on the 17th and 18th of February 2023. More training sessions would be organised during the course of the edit-a-thon campaign. This would help build the capacity of the editors to create quality articles on English & French Wikipedia.
- 2. Another activity is that the organizing team will release a document that lists all articles deemed fit for a stand-alone Wikipedia article for the campaign. This would eradicate the problem of articles being deleted during the course of the campaign.
- 3. The final activity would be having a physical edit-a-thon where editors would select articles from the list and create them during the event. A minimum of one article per participant would be created and pending issues would be resolved at this event.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
Not applicable
- 5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
SuperSwift - Team Lead (contract) Idogor Melody - Training Lead (contract) Daniel Obiokeke - Communications & Laison to The AfroCreatives WikiProject (contract) John Joy Kolapo - Training (contract)
A call for other positions would be put up to get more members in the team
- 6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Geography, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial
- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
African cinema is still underrepresented on English and French Wikipedia. This campaign would bridge the gap as well as creating quality articles about African films and TV.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Culture, heritage or GLAM
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Disabilities, Socioeconomic status, Age
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
The target participants are members of the Wikimedia Niger Delta community and other members of the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group. The participants would be engaged through online and offline media campaigns, creating WhatsApp & Telegram groups for communication and training activities.
Since African film and TV is about the culture of Africa, this campaign seeks to address the cultural gap on French & English Wikipedia about Africa film and TV by producing quality articles that would showcase Africa to the world.
Specific investments would be tailored towards the underrepresented based on socioeconomic status like provision of internet services for the period of the campaign (especially during the online training and edit-a-thon). There would be no discrimination based on gender identity, age, disabilities, geography, ethnic/racial/religious/cultural background. Everyone from all works of life is welcome to participate in this event. Conversely, some disabilities would be difficult to put into consideration; for example, the event does not have facility for blind editors. It should be noted that all centers for physical edit-a-thons and trainings would be wheelchair accessible to encourage some disabled editors to join the campaign
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
Wikimedia safe space policy would be applied for all training and physical edit-a-thons. Participants would be informed of the safe space policy before the events; stickers, banners, and fliers would also be produced to inform everyone of what is expected of them. All forms of harassment would be met with corrective actions.
- 11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
Through the use of the Whatsapp platforms of the Wikimedia Niger Delta Community, plans are already in place to make sure the event is a success. Other communities would be carried along in the coming days through various social media platforms when the grant proposal is approved.
- 12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?
No
If yes:

- N/A
- 12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
- N/A
- 13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.
Yes
- 13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.
We would partner with The Africa Narrative (http://www.theafricanarrative.org). The AfroCreatives WikiProject is an initiative of The Africa Narrative to support and mobilize creatives and professionals from the African cultural and creative industries, as well as African cultural enthusiasts, to contribute and enhance knowledge on Wikipedia about Africa’s creative economy. Its initial area of focus is African film, and its first campaign was launched in 2022.
The Africa Narrative would assist in advocacy, communications and mobilisation.
- 14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.
Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Improve User Experience
Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation
[edit]- 15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?
I would like to know if the local community in the Niger Delta would be more aware of the value of open knowledge and the use of Wikipedia to share knowledge with the world freely. An awareness that editors would be interested in adding content to Wikipedia after the event is long over. The editing skills of editors would also be assessed to check for improvements in their editing patterns.
- 16. Based on these learning questions, what is the information or data you need to collect to answer these questions? Please register this information (as metric description) in the following spaces provided.
