Akwa Ibom State and Bayelsa State are two states within the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria. Akwa Ibom state is known for its diverse ethnic groups which includes Ibibio, Anang, Oron, Eket, Ibeno, and Mbo while Bayelsa State is one of Nigeria’s famous oil producing states with rich cultural heritage and coastal lines. The tribes that are found in Bayelsa State includes the ijaw, Isoko and Urhobo people. Information on Wikipedia about these groups, their languages and locations are not properly documented on Wikipedia. Popular events and activities in Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa States like the Ekombi dance, Usoro Ekoon Festival, Usoro Abasi Festival, The Dakkada Towers, Itam Industrial Area, Stubb creek forest reserve, Akwa Ibom Christmas Village, Ibaka Deep Seaport, Aluminium Shelter Company of Nigeria, Content Tower, Opukushi, Atala Oilfield, Wilberforce Island and Okpoama Beach are totally missing from Wikipedia page despite meeting the notability requirements in Wikipedia. This has further contributed to low readership and to poor visibility of articles about the states in Wikipedia. When compared to other states in Nigeria like Lagos State, Edo State, Ogun State and Abuja, information about Bayelsa and Akwa-Ibom states are poorly represented in Wikipedia, partly due to poor Wikimedia activities within the states. This project therefore intends to fill this content gap, which will inturn impact positively on contributor and readership gaps within the states. To achieve this, the project team will partner with the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Uyo and the Department of History and International Studies, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State. To guide the participants in creating diverse relevant Wikipedia articles, a list of notable subjects without Wikipedia articles have been created and is still being updated. See link below https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dWC3luibeKyaj7gfFFxhHeZ0s9KTFJVtpKFO2kvo34o/edit

The main approaches to addressing the problems mentioned above is by 1. building capacity of members of the academic community in Akwa-Ibom and Bayelsa States so they can possess the needed skills to contribute local expert knowledge in Wikipedia. 2. By organizing series of Edit-a-thon and Write-a-thon with the goal of filling the content gap of the people of Akwa Ibom state and Bayelsa State.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found.
