WikiMedia platforms such as Wikipedia and Wikiversity are growingly recognized as important sources of information for students, researchers and professionals. Big tech companies also acknowledge WIki platforms as valuable sources by including them as important databases for training Large Language Models (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/18/magazine/wikipedia-ai-chatgpt.html) and combating misinformation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relationship_between_Google_and_Wikipedia#Google's_reliance_on_Wikipedia_to_combat_misinformation).

Helping Give Away Psychological Science is a US-based non-profit organization aimed at bridging the gap between students, researchers, clinicians and the general public by sharing high-quality resources. (https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Helping_Give_Away_Psychological_Science#:~:text=HGAPS%20aims%20to%20bridge%20the,spreading%20accessible%20and%20free%20resources.). Wikipedia and Wikiversity play a main role in HGAPS's strategy, providing an open, collaborative and widely accessed platform for these resources.

Besides text-based materials, HGAPS have also been creating video content (https://www.youtube.com/c/HGAPSHelpingGiveAwayPsychologicalScience/featured), mainly by recording presentations from content-experts in diverse topics within Clinical Psychology (e.g., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OoEZMdivC8), but also WikiMedia platforms such as Wikipedia and Wikiversity (e.g., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YPnecz-_mc). Video resources have a positive impact on learning, (https://doi.org/10.3102/0034654321990713), even for complex subjects such as clinical skills (https://doi.org/10.2147/AMEP.S62473). Thus, HGAPS video content could play an important role within the learning environment fostered by the organization.

However, current materials are all in English, limiting access to these valuable tools for non-English speaking audiences (which paradoxically tend to be those in most need).

Current technology allows the creation of accurate subtitles in different languages through automatic transcription and translation, especially if these can be reviewed by individuals familiar with the content area and target-language. One step further, AI dubbing can be generated through different platforms (including open source ones, such as SoniTranslate and WeeaBlind) in order to make these resources even more accessible.

Therefore, this project aims to broaden the accessibility and improve the documentation of the existing HGAPS’ video resources by building a Wikiversity-based toolkit for Psychology researchers and practitioners (Giving Away Psychology Flicks, or GapFlicks). To improve multilingual accessibility of these videos, curated English transcriptions will be uploaded to Youtube (therefore allowing more accurate automatic translations in all the worlds’ most spoken languages). As a feasibility testing of this approach, and building upon existing HGAPS’ international collaborations in Brazil, Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, a Portuguese and Spanish-speaking version of GAPFlicks will be built, including curated Portuguese and Spanish subtitles and AI dubbed versions of a subset of the videos. This will enhance the availability of that knowledge content to native speakers of Spanish and Portuguese in Latin-American countries, totaling more than 600 million people, including more than 200 million Portuguese speakers in Brazil and more than 400 million Spanish speakers in other Latin-American countries.

Dubbing a random, paired subset of the videos will allow us to measure the impact of that specific adaptation (above curating original transcripts) before further generalization of this process. Measured outcomes will include access to specific videos on the toolkit pages (through the PageViews suite) and Youtube view numbers (across time and dubbed/not-dubbed video groups). The videos will also be converted to open format (https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Help:How_to_embed_a_video) and uploaded directly to Wikimedia Commons, and the materials generated by this project will be integrated through well-documented Wikidata objects.

Besides the dubbed versions of current HGAPS channel content (which includes information about Psychology, data analysis and Wiki editing), GAPFlicks will also include instructions on how to make videos more accessible. These will be based on the procedures employed in the current project, and also recorded in videos in English, Portuguese and Spanish. By having all these steps supported by the use of free software (including open source automatic dubbing software), the project intends to be sensitive to possible resource limitations and needs of international colleagues. As future directions, we also expect to use the tools developed in this project to establish partnerships with international researchers from diverse backgrounds to have talks dubbed from their native languages into English and other broadly spoken languages. This could both increase the visibility of research produced internationally and increase the availability of diverse perspectives on relevant topics worldwide.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Learning and metrics[edit]

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Although we expect that having curated transcripts and dubbed videos, respectively, will lead to progressively bigger increases in audience, the specific effects of these contributions has yet to be explored. Dubbing a random subset of the videos will allow both testing the feasibility of this project and the effect of that specific adaptation. As mentioned before, we have experience in holding hybrid meetings welcoming international team members. However, this will be our first experience in holding editathons outside the US. Thus, as an organization, HGAPS also wants to learn more about the potential and challenges in holding cross-country editathons. This will be evaluated through participation and productivity (Wiki editing) indexes and qualitative reports from the editathons held through this project.
