The number 6 of the United Nations (UN), Sustainable Development Goals (SGD's) is clean Water and Sanitation. Thus clean water, sanitation and access to water is very important in our lives.
Nigerian Constitution recognized the right to water and sanitation. Most people in Nigeria do not have access to clean water, especially in the rural areas. The Global water sanitation and hygiene statistics shows that 79% of Nigerians go through challenge of water scarcity. In 2015 in Nigeria 60 million people lacked at least access to 'basic water' as for Sanitation only 33% of the total population had access to at least basic Sanitation. This was 39% of the Urban population and 27% of the rural population. Approximately 122 million people still lacked the access to at least basic Sanitation.
Recently in 2023 there has been a flood in Nigeria that stopped transportation across the Northern and the Southern part of the country which leads to a massive negative effects and price hike of goods, services and commodities due to flood that effect the Kwara and Kogi state bridge that link the Northern and the Southern Nigeria. This leads to fuel hike in Northern Nigeria and foodstuff hike in Southern Nigeria. This floods is as a result of Climate change and lack of proper awareness of community sanitation and lack of proper information available to educate the communities.
Recently this year before the raining season our community finds it very difficult to have access to water even at the big cities in the urban areas, due to climate change and lack of proper Water Sanitation this lead to girls and women disproportionately affected by the burden of fetching water and inadequate menstrual health and hygiene at home and school. Poor water access sanitation hygiene (WASH), services in health facilities which put mothers and newborn at risk. Rapid population growth and Climate change compound the WASH challenges which need to be addressed to ensure no one is left behind.
In our community, one of the key challenges and problem resulting to flood, and in accessibility of water is the dump of waste and dirt to the water line, small rivers and community building along water roads. This is a clear example of lack of proper awareness on the dangers and consequences of these actions.
After a careful study we recognize that, there's a very wide gap of information missing in our community about Water and Sanitation. As important as the area is, article in our community (Hausa Wikipedia) about water and sanitation are non existence. Even though there are large volume of articles on water and sanitation in English Wikipedia. Therefore and awareness need to be done to ensure those articles are created/translated for the better consumption of our community due to language barrier of English in most cases. So we will like to create those articles on Wikipedia as Wikipedia is one of the reliable and free access to information in the world and one of the key means of getting reliable information in our community.
The main approaches to be used to solve this challenges are as follow.
1. An online campaign that will educate and call the attention of community members towards educating them with relevant Wikipedia articles on how to sanitize water and the negative effects and dangers of abusing water lines, roads, and construction on water highways by the community. This campaign will also encourage editors to write about water, flood and drought crisis in Nigeria.
2.two in person edithathon to create and translate articles that are widely non existent in our community (Hausa Wikipedia) relates to Water Sanitation and Hygiene. And also upload photos of water crisis and destruction in our community.
3. Online workshops, seminar to train editors and newbies on how to translate, proof read and what to do after translation to results in better articles that will be used to educate the community.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The plan activities are as follows;
1. An online campaign, this will be an online campaign for two weeks using Wikipedia article to educate our community about Water Sanitation and Hygiene. This campaign will also launch the project and encourage Wikipedia editors to write about Water crisis in Nigeria as a whole. The online campaign will use a design fliers for grabbing the communities attention towards the project.
2. There will be two days in person editathon to create and translate Article related to Water Sanitation and Hygiene such as Sanitation, Backwater valve, Adsorption/bio-oxidation process, Anaerobic membrane bioreactor, Cesspit, and 50 other water sanitation and hygiene articles to hausa Wikipedia and also polish 100 articles related to Water sanitation and hygiene. This is where the list of the articles will be shared and participants at the events will create/translate them and make them available at the hausa Wikipedia since a large volume of articles on Water sanitation and hygiene are available in English Wikipedia. And these articles are not in existence in Hausa Wikipedia. By the virtue of this project we will make at least 50 new articles on Water sanitation and hygiene available on Hausa Wikipedia.
We will also, used the 2 days editathon to upload at least 300 photos of water crisis, ranging from dirt on water ways and lines, construction on the water roads and lines and they effect of flood destruction on buildings in our community. And 200 photos of the project ranging from the 2 edithathons, online seminar/workshop and the campaign fliers.
3 An online workshops and seminar, this will serve as a means to train editors and new editors on how to properly translate, proof read, make references available and things to do inwards to make a translated articles standard for reading/ consumption and for Wikipedia general acceptanceacceptance guide.

(required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.
The idea of this project started since mid last year during the raining season. The flood that's stops transportation within the Kwara and Kogi State Axis that's increase the prices of Food stuff in the southern Nigeria and Petroleum In the northern Nigeria brought about the idea of this project.
Since then we'd been discussing with some of our experience editors, the likes of Aliyu, Anas, Abba Hauwa, abdullahi on this via WhatsApp, online and when we meet in Wikipedia programs along these times. What actually makes the immediate move to this, is the delayed we encounter here in Northern Nigeria about this year (2024) rainfall. This so much brought the discussion on the topic of Water crisis, Water sanitation and hygiene. And it leads to putting this project to action.
Thus, we came together and finally plan for this on the recent online sessions we hold on 23rd June, 2024 and 7th July, 2024. On the key issues and concerns in Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa Community.
