1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Our primary aim has been uplifting Hausa Wiktionary, hence the need to come up with this initiative following the success of our recent community engagement activities, we would use this to further increase engagement and retention rates among both new and experienced editors in our growing community, enhance their capacity and contributions.

i) Therefore, our primary strategy is to collaborate with academic institutions and begin the journey of making Wiktionary a resource tool in academic endeavors, this initiative is to identify important vocabulary words and many relevant words missing that are paramount in understanding the language, the teaming volunteers will work on with proper sources to identify topics for impact. As such we will try to fill the content gap ,and to engage volunteers to participate in developing educational content under a free license or in the public domain and disseminate it effectively and globally. We are in touch with NCPUG for support in regards to audio files for the content being created.

ii) We will carry out clean up mentorship to solve errors in Hausa Wiktionary by correcting those words whose meaning is not completed, correcting those in plurals, words that are created in English and in Arabic language, create citations. And there is also a huge errors made by Hausa Wiktionary editors, which is the inability to use the Hausa hooked letters, as English script was invented as official Hausa writing system but in the inventory, some consonants are not found in English correcting those word that are Hooked but written in plain letters will be emphasize to eradicate margin for error.

iii) Volunteers will be train on how to align with guided rules and policy of Wikitionary General Contribution policy set across all Wikimedia Projects for Wikitionary. Words that are related to Hausa Wikitionary will be perfectly created, in such away that users and new bees do not create a word that is not worth encyclopedic.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

We shall collaborate with academic institutions, and organizations interested in supporting the language and wikipedia movement. We will work with lecturers and students of Hausa Language Department of Kaduna State University. Through these partnerships, we aim to create a sustainable Hausa language community on Hausa Wiktionary.

This project aim to carry out (3) online trainings and two in person events to mentor existing volunteers and the new ones on Wiktionary editing skills and contents to work on, it will take us the duration of two month for such impact.

The scheduled is for them to carry out assignment/task, participate in online courses and participate in in-person events. Mentorship and support will also be provided to community members through team leaders who will guide and assist them in contributing efficiently to Hausa Wiktionary using resources such as brochure and guidelines, we will be maintaining communication and sensitization during the implementation time frame through social media handles.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

1-Sensitization and outreach increasing awareness among the Existing editors, prospective volunteers the department lecturers that will be given keynotes and guidance during the in-person training both before, after approval, and during the implementation stage.

2- In person event: Two in-person training events inside Kaduna State University engage the participants physically.

  • Training new and existing editors how to create words with Hooked letters.
  • Training users how to upload audio files in Wikimedia commons and how to link the audio files in Wiktionary, so that words will be always created with audio files.
  • Train users how to moved pages so that words that are created starting with small letters will be moved to capital letters and other typing errors.
  • Training to Hausa Wiktionary contributors to know what Wiktionary is what is not,to know more about Wiktionary guidelines, policies and entry layout. The participants will work both online and offline to identify important vocabulary words and many relevant words not found in Wiktionary that are necesassary in understanding the language, the teaming volunteers will work on with proper sources to identify topics for impact. More so, a page will be created on Hausa Wiktionary for such activities.

2- Online training: During this project we plan to carry out three online trainings for the existing users and new volunteers. New volunteers will be joining to learn and build their skills/experiences of contributing to Hausa wiktionary.

In general, these events will serve as opportunities for volunteers to discuss ongoing project, inform on upcoming developments, answer questions among others. Moreso, a page will be created on Hausa Wiktionary for such activities.

Salisu Adamu: I will be in charge of planning of the project and organizing, delivering training sessions. Fatyutea0803505: She will be in charge of organizing sharing information to all participants both online and offline. Abubakr1111 (Facilitator) will help me in facilitating the event both online and offline

Anasskoko: (Facilitator) Project lead on training users on audio files upload in Wikimedia commons and how to link the audio files in Wiktionary. 
Musa Vacho77: (Facilitator) will help  in facilitating during offline events.

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Content of words to be increased massively in Hausa Wiktionary, Clean up and Polish existing words, audio and image files upload in wikimedia commons by volunteers. We are optimistic giving proper consideration to women who have made significant contributions before will lead to more female representation online. The attainement is result is to have a pool of standard content in Wiktionary and would bring more understanding of the language to the global populace.

The target participants are existing members from the Hausa wiktionary community, and anyone from Hausa community who can contribute will be engage. New volunteers will be recruited from the Hausa Language Department of Kaduna state University whom will be assisted and mentored by existing editors to keep both and new volunteers connected and encourage learning and sharing.

We recognize the importance of maintaining communication with our participants and plan to utilize various platforms such as Whatsapp, Telegram, and social media to achieve this.

We shall identify most active, motivated, and knowledgeable contributors and invite them to this future project and events, providing them with opportunities to take on leadership roles within the community. We will add new participants to the existing WhatsApp/Telegram group to encourage continued discussions and collaborations.We understand the importance of communicating with our participants, as such we intend to utilize our various platforms such as Whatsapp, Telegram.

We are already in contact with Hausa Language Department and are duly informed about the propose program and the management are willing to collaborate as we working towards the same goal of developing knowledge and advancing Hausa language in particular.

We will create an outreach dashboard and WMF Hashtags to be used where we will monitor, track users contributions (Number of words created and improved) Glamorous Tool to track number of audio uploaded/used in Wiktionary.
